Where are all the whistlers?

This morning laid in bed, I heard someone working on a neighbours house whistling.
It was really quite uplifting.

It then occurred to me I cannot remember the last time I heard someone whistle.

Is it a generational thing?

Perhaps when wolf whistles were deemed inappropriate men stopped bothering to hone their skill.

I'm a prolific whistler . My son who is 21 was taught by my Dad when he was about 6. He stayed with my Dad for the week and when we picked him up he was whistling away quite merrily and never stopped. One of his year 3 teachers got quite exasperated with him and complained he didn't even know when he was doing it.
He has quite a wide repertoire from Beethoven to Eminem but one of his favourites has always been "Bless your beautiful hide" 🤣

I’ve whistled since I was a little girl, I even get comments about it where I work in a care home, the residents will say,”was that you whistling”and I say yes, most times I don’t even know I’m doing it,sometimes they say it sounded good.
I’m 71 and I’ve been whistling since I was a little girl, but my aunt may used to say
A whistling woman
And a crowing hen
Is neither good to God nor men? 😜

Mr P is a constant whistler. It is very useful in supermarkets when I have wandered off and need to locate him. Thinking about it, I am not aware of my children or grandchildren whistling so perhaps it is a dying art.

Whistling brings to mind our old window cleaner and milkman🙂

Aaargh whistling makes my toes curl.

‘A whistling woman and a crowing hen, would bring the Devil from his den’.

That was what I was told. Used to be able to whistle, but crowned teeth make it impossible now.

Yes I think it has died out to a large extent, even my late mother remarked on it in 2000.

Strange this comment should come up today, as shopping yesterday in a clothes shop, I heard someone whistling and it was the assistant, maybe in her fifties. It was my first time out in twelve days and I was pleased to hear her.

My Dad was a whistler and I’ve inherited his talent 😆

My grandchildren are impressed when I display my whistling skills. They can make the whistling sound but can’t whistle a tune as such. I find it impossible to explain to them how to whistle a recognisable tune.

I loathe whistling! I had to ask my husband to stop it when we first got together as it puts my teeth on edge, like nails down a blackboard. My mother was a very good whistler and she enjoyed doing it. I didn't like her much (it was mutual) perhaps that's the reason I don't like. To get to your point. No I don't seem to hear workers whistling and we live on a large building site at the moment - mostly they have radios on or ear pods in.

My MiL always told me not to whistle in the house because it is unlucky. Now, I only whistle outside if I think no one can hear me. I know it’s irrational

I do remember my late MIL whistling a lot. She was a terrible driver and after every scary near miss, would always smile and whistle away😁

Maggiemaybe Thu 25-Jul-24 10:51:26

Where are the whistlers? Well I’ve got one of them here at home. At least I always know where he is. smile

I’ve never been able to do it.

Urmstongran Thu 25-Jul-24 10:53:59

I love to hear (men especially) whistling. My uncle (84) still does it. Old habits but it is dying out. No young ‘uns seem to do it that I’ve noticed.

MissAdventure Thu 25-Jul-24 11:27:23

I'm a whistler. smile

Sadly I never got the hang of it, discouraged perhaps by my traditionalist mum who was brought up in Germany where
“Mädchen , die pfeifen, und Hühnern, die krähen, soll man beizeiten die Hälse umdrehen”
Which in English I believe survives as “a whistling girl and a crowing hen always come to some bad end” and was used to discourage girls from whistling, which was formerly considered indecorous (!)
But jolly tradesmen whistling happy tunes? Now they all seem to have their EarPods in.

MissAdventure Thu 25-Jul-24 11:55:05

It's quite relaxing, whistling a complete tune, with all the "twiddly bits" in it.

Forget mindfulness, deep breathing, and asmr.

Just whistle your cares away.

My granny always told me it made Our Blessed Lady cry!

Funny, I was thinking just recently that you don’t see children skipping ( without ropes, I mean, but you don’t see that either) any more, and it’s a long time since I heard anyone do that loud, piercing whistle with their fingers.

I’ve never been able to do it.

I have one too. I always know when he's coming back from a walk with the dog because I hear him whistling.

The last person I heard whistle was an old neighbour, in his 80s, and that was some years ago. It was a nice thing to hear because he was quite tuneful. I hadn’t noticed that whistling was dying out, but you’re right, it is, or has.

midgey Thu 25-Jul-24 13:01:12

I love whistling and whistlers! Particularly enjoy the insurance advert with the whistling.

SueDonim Thu 25-Jul-24 13:18:08

Daddima wrote it’s a long time since I heard anyone do that loud, piercing whistle with their fingers.

My Dh can still do that. He rarely does it, because it’s ear-splitting but he recently whistled up our GD when she was too far away for calling out. The look on her face was a thing of wonder! grin She’s been able to whistle since she was five, mostly while sitting on the loo.

I suppose people nowadays have ear phones on and when out and about we’re subjected to buskers tastes in bad music, so there’s no room for whistling.

twinnytwin Thu 25-Jul-24 13:28:57

Daddima - I watch the little ones going to infant/junior school along our road and most of them are skipping or running alongside their parents. Very few just walk. My two GDs love to dance and they still skip as they walk.
My grown up DS always whistles as he walks to the bathroom pass my bedroom (he's living with us atm) - I think it's just in case I make an appearance semi-clothed.

sharon103 Thu 25-Jul-24 14:28:45

I haven't heard any whistlers for years.
I always wanted to whistle that high pitched whistle where they put two fingers inside their mouth if you know what I mean.
I never did master it though.
I thought it quite a compliment to get wolf whistles.

Had to change my day shopping because a bloke on checkout use to whistle constantly, you could hear him all over the supermarket 😩 I found to my annoyance it affected my tinnitus 😩
