Our adorable 6 month old grandson was born with a rare problem which meant his skull plates healed too soon and so the head was misshaped and there was the fear of cranial pressure on the brain. He was referred to Great Ormond Street Hospital where parents and baby were treated extremely really well, no waiting around and plenty of staff and volunteers available to help.
The operation to cut through the skull and implant springs to allow the head to take on a more natural shape and hopefully guard against cranial pressure - though our grandson will need to go back regularly for checks until he is eight - took several very long hours, the after care was exemplary, as you can imagine the parents needed some tlc too.
3 weeks later he is at home and recovering well, his head shape changing already.
In 4 months the springs will be removed and all should be well though his speech might be delayed most babies born with this go on to lead full and active lives vets.
So hats off to GOSH, and the researchers there that pioneered this spring surgery in the UK.
Cannot thank them enough.
