Memories from way back

I bought Germolene this week for the first time in years.
The smell took me back 60 years.
It’s distinctive and hasn’t changed.
My mum used it as the only antiseptic for cuts+ grazes on my knees and hands.

Dettol was the kitchen sink disinfectant, and Vim for scouring jobs.
Do you remember your childhood from fragrances which take you straight back there?

JEYES Fluid, that acrid smell that almost burned the back of your throat will always remind me of helping my dad when I was young cleaning out his two greenhouses on his allotment st the end of the season. His trusty and rusty old bucket filledwith water and a liberal amount of the black fluid poured in and the smell of creoste, the old worn down scrubbing brushes and the rather unwilling helpers scrubbing the wooden benches then the glass and finally the floor. A bag of crisps and a bottle of Vimto was our reward, now I’m remembering Vimto oh dear 😅

Mum’s perfume was Yardley Lilley of the Valley. Her dressing table always smelt of it. When the coalman a came, the smell of the coal shed permeated the house. Roast beef on a Sunday, the gas copper full of bubbling sheets on Mondays and my Dad’s garage smells: wood shavings, the glue pot, oil, rouge polish on the polishing motor mop plus the dominant smell of his latest hobby, he could turn his hand to anything.

Someone mentioned Parrish’s mixture, the vilest taste imaginable. I have no idea what it smelt like I used to hold my nose and close my eyes when reluctantly fed a spoonful by Mum. TCP, Gemaline and Eucryl toothpaste in a round tin.

Thank you everyone. What a fabulous reminiscing. One thing I really miss as a Teenager I loved using Desert Flower talcum powder by Shelton, the smell was absolutely gorgeous. I’d love to get my hands on some now. I saw it once on EBay but I think the scent would have gone out of it by now, sadly. Anne French’s Cleansing Cream was like bleach, it’s left me with spider veins on my face!! What a gorgeous walk down memory lane this has been!

I can remember Desert Flower, thank you Warmgloves and socks!
Brought back a long forgotten memory.

Sorry, Desert Flower Talc was by Shulton not Shelton. If I felt confident to buy from EBay I would take a chance and buy it from there. Another great perfume in a very small dark blue triangular bottle was the lovely Evening in Paris. I used to put it on and dream I was by the Eiffel Tower!

Wrights coal tar soap was always at the kitchen sink.
A broth made with mutton and veg and generally called "kale" it's smell wafted downstairs and always on washing days.
Tripe cooking at New Year.
The smell of linseed that was all over the town famous for the production of linoleum.

Bought Germolene!!! DH still has the tin his mum gave him in 1967 when he left home for college. (Laughing).

Secondwind I loved Avon Pretty Peach too, I was one of the two younger bridesmaids at a wedding and we felt so grown-up with our gorgeous pink lacey dresses and matching headdresses plus the peachy perfumed cream applied following a lovely bath, and the talc.

Oil of Ulay & Ponds Cold Cream.

Voseene shampoo.

The smell of plastic toys.

Homemade Victoria sponge cake, always reminds me of Sunday tea with the family.

Dr Collis Brown's compound - it came in a little bottle and you just put two drops into a glass of water - and it cured everything!! My father said they used it in the army to cure eveything!

Nagmad2016 Mon 05-Aug-24 17:00:31

Carbolic soap. When we bought our house the cupboard under the stairs smelled of carbolic. Despite a thorough clean and painting, I can still smell it when I open the door.

I’d love to smell Avon’s ‘Pretty Peach’ again, in its lovely little container with peaches on the top.
I had a friend at school who must have practically drowned herself in ‘Aqua Manda’ every day. I couldn’t stand it!

Hot Tarmac when doing the roads. My dad was an Asphalter and I miss the smell, although I don’t miss the little black specks of tar that used to always find my white school shirts in the wash.😤.

Anyone else have camphorated oil rubbed on their chest and back when they had a cold?

Southendsue Mon 05-Aug-24 15:44:14

The smell of a real rose garden takes me back to childhood we had a front garden full of rose bushes the ones you buy just don't have that lovely fragrance

valdali Mon 05-Aug-24 15:42:29

Hay & silage remind me of growing up on a farm. Pipe smoke reminds me of dad.Mixed spice & cloves remind me of childhood christmases.

NannaFirework Mon 05-Aug-24 15:34:06

It’s taste for me - picked some blackberries locally - when washed and sampled took me straight back to blackberry picking at the bottom of our garden as a very young girl…
Smells - Tar and newly mowed grass ❤️❤️

grandtanteJE65 Mon 05-Aug-24 15:29:13

The smell of the Christmas tree when it has just been brought into the house brings back all the marvellous Christmases of my childhood.

Raspberry jam boiling conjures up the summer when I picked our raspberries or helped Mummy pick them when I was smaller and then helped make the jam.

Cetavalon was the antiseptic of my childhood. I don't think it is used in Denmark at all. The smell of surgical spirit conjures up Daddy's consulting room.

Lavender floor polish: Mondays when the lino floors were polished.

The cream of the top of milk in school I can still remember the smell I loved the milk at school with a biscuit.

My dad’s greenhouse the smell of the tomato vines was absolutely gorgeous and I loved it.

My best memory is when running home from junior school I could smell Scouse my mum often made. She cooked the meat and veg on the stove with a little gravy powder made a pie crust (to make it more filling). Mum would then put it in a large baking dish and bake it off in the oven. It was absolutely heaven I still make mine the same way.

I remember my great uncle's greenhouse and the smell of tomatoes, I still love it!

Does anyone remember the lovely orange juice they would had out to mums at the clinic. I remember loving the taste.

Oooh, yes! I absolutely loved that juice and have never found any other juice that comes remotely close to it.

Nanna58 Mon 05-Aug-24 15:09:13

Not exactly ‘fragrances’ - the stench of perming lotion when my
Mum and Aunt did their hair , and the smell of tea towels being boiled in a saucepan-
🤮

Joannapiano, I have been trying to find Pond's Cold Cream and I can't find it anywhere. Please could you tell me where you are able to buy it from?

Boots chemist. My flying daughter brings large tubs from America for me as we both love it.

I was interested to read that the square logo on Imperial Soap was designed as a sort if soap dish to stop it going soft and it’s meant to be placed upside down.
