I dislike this question after a holiday. Naturally when I choose a holiday destination I hope it will be “ somewhere nice”. Who wouldn’t, unless it is a trip with a specific purpose other than the destination eg to visit a relative or attend a conference.
What is in the mind of the questioner? Their idea of somewhere nice might be somewhere I would never choose to go, for example a hot country with nothing to do except lie on a beach and swim in the pool.
As a late birthday present my DD and SIL have booked a cottage near Fort William for a week in early October. The four of us will be going along with the 2 dogs . It’s alongside a loch with beautiful views and we will be able to explore a lot of the highlands including thee Isle of Skye and Loch Ness . We usually do beach holidays which I love but I really want to visit Scotland. I hope I get to see the Kelpies too . Or is that Kelties ? I’m not sure but as I’m typing this on my phone I can’t Google the answer at the same time
I was worried when the girl washing my hair announced that she was off to Turkey for her holidays as it was cheap at the resort she chose. It was the time when tourists were being attacked on the beach there. She seemed oblivious and I'm sure she and her friends had a nice time.
If that's the sort of thing you like then you will like it.
I'm just home from a week at the Gaelic college on Skye where they run short courses over the Summer. That's the sort of thing I like😀
Alisonsmith4 me too, although these days I spend most of my time under a parasol except when I’m in the pool or the sea. I’m 72 and still working so a lovely relaxing break is very welcome. My DH usually goes for a few walks- not if the weather is too hot though - but that doesn’t appeal to me. I read, do puzzles, people watch and swim - oh and drink the odd cocktail
Anywhere near water or on water - the Lake District, Italian Lakes, ocean cruises and canal narrowboats for me! Not sitting on a beach though…I like to explore. I don’t mind being asked if I’ve been anywhere nice, unless it was actually a dump!😂 The phrase which really annoys me, for some reason, is ‘Take care’. Why wouldn’t I? 🤔
I agree re 'Take care'. I was taken aback when a girl got off the bus to a chorus of, 'Stay safe, take good decisions,' from a group of american tourists. Mind you I was already in a bad mood at them crowding out the bus and bashing everyone with their huge rucksacks! Edinburgh in August! Grrrr
Why are people so rude answering a perfectly innocent and friendly question?
I don't know, but since being on GN I rarely talk to anyone I don't know well unless I have to.
Years ago I would happily chat to anyone, listen to their problems, laugh at their jokes, ask about their life and tell them about mine but not any more. I'm all too aware now that I might be being intrusive and thoughtless or rude.

Really? GN is not the real world surely? I just carry on chatting.
I think I have fairly good radar around who wants to engage and who is having a bad day/ prefers some space.
I think it’s just a less blunt way of saying where did you go? People don’t generally mean any harm, it’s just conversation. and being a smart xxxx isn’t attractive

I suppose "did you go somewhere nice?" at least can be answered truthfully from experience.
"Are you going somewhere nice?"... less so. Unless you have been before you may not be certain just how nice a place is!
I have been to places that others like that just aren't for me, places that just weren't what I was expecting even after lots of research and places which were "as described" but there was obviously something I'd not factored in...
There ate at least things to talk about I suppose.
Anywhere hot is good in my book, although I couldn’t just do 2 weeks on a beach, I’d have to explore. Was in Kefalonia in June and off to Crete next month. And had a wild moment and booked a guided tour to follow the Silk Road in Uzbekistan next year 😳
