Warning. Gov.UK site? SCAM?

Yesterday I tried to renew our Vehicle Road Tax, on line. I thought I was on the Gov.UK site. The payment process appeared to have changed and was taking ages to process. Although there was nowhere to tick 12 / 6 months payment.

As I was unsure whether the amount had been taken I tried to check whether the Road Tax dates had been updated.
I then discovered that £0.50p had been taken from the bank, for Vehicle Information!
This morning a further £7.95 has been taken. Evidently I have signed up for a subscription! No I did not! (Knowingly)
But if I did not cancel within 24 hours, a MONTHLY subscription will be taken. I don't remember seeing all this on the site.
It took ages to discover what this was all about, but there is a site where we read that people have had very similar experiences.
I did find a phone number :- 0333 334 0917. Vehicle Information U.K.
Also found where I could 'chat' with a representative. I have been promised a refund, of the cash taken without giving consent. We shall see.
If I was being re-directed from a Gov.UK site, there should be Red Flags all over it to make people aware that the site will charge you for information you do not necessarily want.
Oh I am so cross, but wondered whether anyone else has been HAD, and wanted to put out a warning.

About phone scam calls, I leave the answer machine on all the time. They never leave a message.
I only pick up the phone if I recognise the number.

The problem is I do not ermember the number of all the people who ring me who I will happily speak to. So I can look at the number , not recognise it, yet it is someone I know.

Sadly scammers are getting increasingly sophisticated so we all have to be much more vigilant. I'm always suspicious of lanline calls as very few of my friends call my landline. I often don't answer it if I'm busy as if the calls aren't actually scams they are mostly unwanted marketting calls. If the call is important from a friend they can leave a message. Junk callers never do!

I consedered a call blocking service but I actually quite enjoy winding up scammers if I'm in the mood and have the time to spare!

MOnica, don't you have caller ID. whereby the person's name is displayed, if a known contact ?

M0nica Fri 16-Aug-24 21:54:25

Yes, but not all numbers are programmed into the phone. Immediate family all have caller ID, but there are lots of people I only speak to occasionally or workmen who I speak to a lot over a short period then then the job is done, so they will not be in the system.

Yes, I have been caught in a similar scam. Government sites are hijacked. Really have to fight to get money returned. You have to be really careful that you are using a government site.

The first time I came up against this sort of thing was 15 years ago, when I wanted to buy a copy of a birth certificate. I thought I was buying one from the government site, but when the amount to pay flagged up, I knew that was not the government office site.

You still have to pay, but not such a large double figure amount.

Update. I tried to tell the bank, but all 4? of the staff were busy, doing not a lot.
I checked my bank account today, and the amount has been repaid. I had taken screen shots of the on line conversation, just in case the bank needed proof of their promise to refund.
