Do you envy slim/thin friends who look great in charity shop bargains.

I’m a size 14/16 and a friend of mine is a size 10. She has always looked thin rather than slim but her family is all the same. She has teenage DGDs who look like catwalk models despite eating like horses. Am I envious?? Yep!

The other day we nipped into a charity shop mainly to browse the bookshelves but ended up rifling through the clothes rails (as you do)

She picked a few things at random whilst I hummed and haa’d to myself over one item - a rather nice striped shirt. We didn’t try anything on.

Later that evening my friend sent me some selfies having tried on all the clothes. She looked amazing - everything fitted beautifully, the colours suited her and you would never think she was wearing charity shop bargains.

So…I sent her a pic of me wearing my shirt - looking like I’d just stepped out of a charity shop! 😭

It’s a nack. It’s got to be a nack. 😂😂

As someone who dieted down from a size 22 to a size 14 I feel great at 14 and people tell me how well I have done. It’s hard maintaining it, but I am e bays best friend! I certainly do not feel overweight at size 14. I am 5 ft 6, so not short.

RosiesMaw2 Wed 21-Aug-24 17:33:28

No, why should I?
TBH while the younger generation seem to find wonderful designer bargains on Vinted , EBay , local Sell or Swop or in charity shops, none of my friends admit to shopping there.

I think you just haven't found what suits your figure!

When you're short and dumpy, the problem is that there's very little which does!

VioletSky Wed 21-Aug-24 18:08:46

Everyone has a bikini body

You just need to get a bikini and put it on your body

They say at a certain age you have to choose between your face and your figure... not sure if that's true or what the age is?

Tenko Wed 21-Aug-24 18:15:49

I don’t think it’s the fact that your friend is slim . Some people have the nack of looking great in anything, whether it’s charity shop or high end . Although being slim, clothes hang better . But I know larger ladies who look amazing because they dress for their shape .
I’m 65 and size 12 on the bottom and since menopause 14 on top. I know what suits my bigger busted shape and what gives me a mono boob.
I’ve always loved fashion and my DD is a buyer for a high st store and she’s great at telling me what suits me .

14/16, have my own style, I was slim when I was young.
No I dont feel envious of anyones figure, and if I did, I would do more about mine.

My teaching colleague and good friend, tall, very slim and attractive used to get so many compliments, small and plump, I always looked like the ugly sister beside her.
Now it doesn't bother me.

but I’m also grateful to still be alive at 65, know so many who haven’t made it.

I couldn't disagree more. Who has died already,or out lived us all, take your pick, is completely irrelevant to how we and others look like in charity shop clothes.

Life is here to be enjoyed if you possibly can andwhether you buy chairty shop clothes or couture if you are still living lets enjoy dressing.

I think whether you look good in clothes is more to do with ones basic shape than size. I am 10/12 and was 14/16, but at the heavier weight I could look slimmer because I have long slim legs, Unfortunately I have no waist and my hips are at waist level and to the answer to the question 'Does my bum look big in this, is always 'yes' As for waisted dresses.I look about size 26 in them.

However o several charity shop bargains in my wardrobe. However I do plan my wardrobe very carefully so I do not have too many clothe, so often I am looking for one specific garment and Charity shops cannot usually provide such detailed clothes.

I do think some people just have a natural gift for knowing what suits them, what to put together, and a natural confidence that carries it off, regardless of size and shape. Obviously if you’re tall and slim you’re a coat hanger for more fitted styles, but I’m a firm believer that everybody can look great in the right clothes for them.

Shinamae Wed 21-Aug-24 19:11:55

My friend dresses in everything charity shop (except underwear and socks) and she always looks so well put together.
I have a lovely per Una black coat that I bought a couple of years ago in the charity shop for £10
When I was 15 and just about to leave school, my mum had two boutiques in Ilfracombe and she wanted me to manage one of them and I said no thanks Mum. I’m off to work in the factory and I went to work in a factory called bonus tapes.
I very rarely wear dresses it’s either jeans or these days black smart trousers and a nice top but clothes have never been of great importance to me,when I do dress up (which is very occasionally.) I do get a lot of compliments.
I’m 5 foot six and 11 stone 2lbs,nearly all around my middle and back fat, slim arms and slim legs and no backside..🤷‍♀️
Happy enough how I am but would be happy to a lose few pounds…

I like charity shop clothes because there is so much more variety, I recently bought a lovely floaty Indian style over shirt which I wear over a vest top, and with short fit cotton denim jeans.
Am a 14/16, short and rather stout, so I look silly in dresses and skirts.
Am rather proud of my shape though, is like this because of 4 births and a rather horrible menopause, so it is in my eyes the shape of a survivor.

True, but I prefer a one piece grin

You either have it or not whatever your size, I think you are being "fatist", get a grip.

grandtanteJE65 Thu 22-Aug-24 11:34:21

How I wish we could change places. I am a size 38 or 40 in continental sizes and here the charity shops only have skirts and jeans for LARGE LADIES.

I can usually find shoes and blouses, but that's it.

NannaBarbra Thu 22-Aug-24 12:00:34

I have always been a curvy girl, now aged 60 and a size 22 I buy most of my clothes from online selling sites and anything that I don't like or have got fed up with gets relisted, I wear what makes me feel good, if I think I look amazing then that's all that matters and I don't care what others think of me or look like themselves, embrace your body and style ladies 😀

OnwardandUpward Thu 22-Aug-24 12:01:47

I don't really like charity shops ever since covid. I am worried about germs.

Vinted is a good alternative and saves time too because you can search by the fabric type, colour and brand that you want to buy. As I prefer natural fibres, the kind of brands that sell clothes in the designs I like can be pricey new. I got some real bargains last year.

Glenfinnan Thu 22-Aug-24 12:01:54

I’m a larger lady.., size 20/22…. Trying to get a good fit is a nightmare … from shops and stores not necessarily charity shops! Think we are all too critical of ourselves!!!

knspol Thu 22-Aug-24 12:03:18

I have a friend who is size 16/18 about 5' 9ins tall and would look glamorous in a bin bag. She just seems to grab anything to wear, mixing all sorts of things and colours and always looks amazing, no idea how she does it.

OnwardandUpward Thu 22-Aug-24 12:03:48

I don't think comparing ourselves to our (slimmer) friends is helpful either, especially as many of them are probably wishing they were curvy. grin

Iwtwab12bow Thu 22-Aug-24 12:05:21

I think it depends on which charity shops you go to. I know some wonderful shops in Ludlow where you can pick up fabulous bargains and dreadful ones in Newport which you wouldn't set foot in. It's all about the area.

lovesreading Thu 22-Aug-24 12:05:42

No. I'm a size 20 on a good day but there’s no point being envious, I'm happy with my lot in life pretty much all round.

Poppyred Thu 22-Aug-24 12:09:56

I’m a size 14 now, always a 12 in younger days. I’ve accepted it and try and wear clothes that suit my body shape and size. Nothing too tight fitting (so many women wear clothes two sizes too small for them with rolls of fat sticking out everywhere- WHY?) Long shirts, cardigans etc to hide my bum ( it’s not that big but I don’t like the shape of it) and plenty of bright colours. 😎

Should have added that I have never found anything remotely wearable in a charity shop. I don’t think that has anything to do with size more to do with how affluent the area where you shop is.

I am short for my weight with a generous rump, so hardly ever/ never feel lovely in anything.
Yes slim can carry clothes far better, c’est la vie. At 76 I shouldn’t care, but I still do, so am my own worst critic.

I love it ! “ short for my weight ! “
Me too , I will remember this :-)
