Do you envy slim/thin friends who look great in charity shop bargains.

I’m a size 14/16 and a friend of mine is a size 10. She has always looked thin rather than slim but her family is all the same. She has teenage DGDs who look like catwalk models despite eating like horses. Am I envious?? Yep!

The other day we nipped into a charity shop mainly to browse the bookshelves but ended up rifling through the clothes rails (as you do)

She picked a few things at random whilst I hummed and haa’d to myself over one item - a rather nice striped shirt. We didn’t try anything on.

Later that evening my friend sent me some selfies having tried on all the clothes. She looked amazing - everything fitted beautifully, the colours suited her and you would never think she was wearing charity shop bargains.

So…I sent her a pic of me wearing my shirt - looking like I’d just stepped out of a charity shop! 😭

It’s a nack. It’s got to be a nack. 😂😂

Yes! I used to be a size 8/10 until i went through the change. Now all bets are off and I am sick of it. I have managed to get back down to a size 14 in recents months. But I still feel like a sack of loose tatties in anything these days. At my age I shouldn’t be too bothered but I AM!!!!!

My dad & family were very paunchy. If I had been a bloke, I would have been paunchy too but still have a touch of it. Rest of me is OKayish.

Def! I’ve struggled with my weight since babies came along, no real issues before at all, but now am dreadfully overweight with mobility issues and meds don’t help!

I think you’re right about a hack merlotgran. My daughter seems to have it. She chooses things I probably won’t give a second look.

Beechnut Wed 21-Aug-24 12:34:42

Nack grr

dogsmother Wed 21-Aug-24 13:00:40

If you know how to dress you can look great in anythIng. It’s potluck with me.

Georgesgran Wed 21-Aug-24 13:25:43

If my friends sent me pics of how great they look in their clothes they wouldn't be my friends for long.

LOUISA1523 Wed 21-Aug-24 13:34:45

I'm a size 8 to 10....I'm also 59.....I get stuff from charity shops ....I don't think I look any better or worse than my larger size friends ....I do not look like a catwalk model !

Very jealous indeed! Apple shaped size 12/14, I find it hard to find any clothes that both suit me and are affordable, let alone charity shop ones.

MissAdventure Wed 21-Aug-24 14:11:41

A 12/14 is slim, as far as I'm concerned.

I envy people though, who look great in anything, whatever their size. Q

I'm a size 14, 5ft 8 inches and aged 74. I have a wardrobe full of fabulous charity shop bargains and love colourful clothing especially - (my favourite is a rainbow and flower patterned cotton knitted cardigan originally from Edinburgh's Sweater Shop which is over 20 years old now!!). My mum was a 'first sales' in some of the best clothes department stores and shops in Aberdeen during the days when staff advised customers on 'styling'. I really benefited from her advice and from the sales too. Occasionally, I've even had people cross the road to compliment me on my clothes and even hats....! I think it is a nack, inherited from and nurtured by my mum and which I revel in, but people have different nacks, don't they....?

AGAA4 Wed 21-Aug-24 14:20:03

No I don't envy other slimmer friends. I've accepted that I won't be a size 10 again so dress to please me not to impress.

Poppyred Wed 21-Aug-24 14:55:59

I’m a size 14 now, always a 12 in younger days. I’ve accepted it and try and wear clothes that suit my body shape and size. Nothing too tight fitting (so many women wear clothes two sizes too small for them with rolls of fat sticking out everywhere- WHY?) Long shirts, cardigans etc to hide my bum ( it’s not that big but I don’t like the shape of it) and plenty of bright colours. 😎

You and me both. Story of my life.

Puzzlelove Wed 21-Aug-24 15:12:43

Always had a weight problem. Lost over 3 stones about 8 years ago and kept it off for a long time but it’s creeping back up. Back to Slimming World in October. DH eats tons and doesn’t put on weight. Am I jealous of slimmer friends? A bit but I’m also grateful to still be alive at 65, know so many who haven’t made it.

silverlining48 Wed 21-Aug-24 15:18:27

I am short for my weight with a generous rump, so hardly ever/ never feel lovely in anything.
Yes slim can carry clothes far better, c’est la vie. At 76 I shouldn’t care, but I still do, so am my own worst critic.

GrannyIvy Wed 21-Aug-24 15:26:32

One of my neighbours is a very large lady, her two daughters have the same build but they are all glamorous and dress beautifully and look amazing. I am a 10/12 but cannot look like they do. Some people are just very glammy…..

Primrose53 Wed 21-Aug-24 15:49:38

I’m like Puzzlelove, just very grateful to be alive and well. I have lost so many old schoolfriends the last couple of years and so many friends have had major surgery.

I dress how I like not for anybody else. I must look OK because women I don’t know often stop me and ask where I bought something I’mwearing.

VioletSky Wed 21-Aug-24 15:53:10

I think you just haven't found what suits your figure!

karmalady Wed 21-Aug-24 15:58:27

I accept my weight and my changed older shape, I am healthy, fit for my age and enthusiastic with my hobbies. Don`t worry about weight, it is the inner self that counts. My mums stroke ward was full of thin women.

Grandmabatty Wed 21-Aug-24 16:03:38

I'm not envious of slimmer friends. I'm small and was always curvy, then fat. I'm still bigger than I would like. My best friend could wear anything and always found a bargain, however she died at 64. My other friends vary in size but have different issues. I realised a few years ago that I was content with my lot and I still am

Chocolatelovinggran Wed 21-Aug-24 16:33:43

I look like a bag lady mostly: a clean and tidy bag lady, of course.

CanadianGran Wed 21-Aug-24 17:23:41

Most of my friends have always been on the heavier size, but still manage to look smart and up to date. I have always been by nature slimmer, and try to look my best.

I would hate to think I was making my friends feel bad when we are together. I think we are all of an age to accept the bodies we were given.
