If this were a light hearted thread, I’d be tempted to suggest that Gransnet is beginning to feel like Midsomer Murders. Yet another poster has disappeared in mysterious circumstances.

It’s deadly serious though. Attempts to contact Urmstongran are falling on stony ground and many of us are concerned because we know how challenging her life is at the moment.

Many of us have received messages of support from Urms when life has dealt us the cruellest of blows and yet we are unable to contact her via pms.

She always let us know when she was taking a break from GN so to go on a long awaited holiday and just disappear is out of character.

I suspect foul play and I’m not taking the p**s!

Apologies, Allira.
I hadn't realised there had been a second Aveline.

Hoi! Are you saying I'm not a thinking woman? I can assure you I am. I'm just not a fan of Sean Bean.

Have you seen Sean Bean in the past in uniform as Sharpe?
Cor!

Yes. 😴
Sorry.

I do like his ex-wife though.

Many of us supported AR on that thread and objected to the victimisation. It was a horrible thread that should never have been started but in my view you have to stand up to people who delight in denigrating another person.

MissAdventure Sun 01-Sept-24 19:27:18

I won't clutch any pearls myself, but I don't wish to associate with a site that aligns itself with the very worst of masculine toxicity.

5 and 6 page threads alluding to a woman a a tart, and thick etc etc are vile.

AGAA4 Sun 01-Sept-24 19:11:56

I don't believe in deleting posts and banning people. Offensive posts should stay so that posters can reply and call out any bad behaviour. I haven't lived for all this time and only heard the language of flowers so I am not going to clutch my pearls if something offensive is posted.

MissAdventure Sun 01-Sept-24 19:10:51

I think people are grown up enough yo know if they are being offensive, unless they're playing the wide eyed innocent card, of course.

I agree, Oreo. But the offended posters have a right to say so. People can't expect to be offensive and not be told. I wouldn't ban people for very much at all, but nor do I think people should have free rein to say what they like, and shout down anyone who disagrees.

But who decides what’s offensive? Some are offended very easily. It’s a minefield.
A poster can say that personally they’re offended, but that doesn’t make something of itself ‘offensive’.
That’s where GNHQ come in to decide.

Yes. Which is what a lot of us are saying. Some are offended easily, and some think if they haven't noticed an offensive post then it didn't happen. Or that is someone is otherwise helpful they can say what they like.

As MissA says, GN is for everyone. Personally (and I can only speak for myself) I would prefer posts and threads to stand unless they are illegal and would get GN into trouble, or unless the poster wants them taken down in case they are personally identified. Threads like this can be confusing if people haven't seen the deleted ones, and lead to accusations of cliques.

I didnt even know I could spell cantankerous!!!! grin

The site is for everyone, regardless of whether others like them or not.
It isn't for the elite few to be given free reign to say what they want, however they see fit.

It's sod all to do with jokes or humour, or news and politics.

Agreed.

It is gnhq who decide what and who to delete, for the umpteenth time.
Do you honestly think any one member here has the power to make gnhq delete sooner because they cantankerous a joke?!?

Having skim read the thread, u have 3 random comments

I can't see there is anything wrong with commenting on being politically aware and having an opinion of a person's clothes. I am a woman, I can multitask.

It is sad that hokes go over some people's heads but that shouldn't stop us taking jokes. Maybe the person perceiving something as an insult should hold fire and try to consider whether it may have been a joke.

And, I've forgotten what my 3rd random point was.grin

Agree, just cos a few don’t get jokes or any kind of humour doesn’t mean it should stop.
I would further say that any posts disliked about any subject at all are simply that, disliked, but that’s just too bad, if it isn’t a racist remark or personal attack on another poster and therefore subject to deletion then posters have to toughen up and realise that if they’re offended, well that’s it they’re offended.

HPQ Nor do I understand. There are a few who often remind us of how successful they've been and I find the constant repetition a bit boring. However, it is easy to skip over those bits.

What I do find irritating are those who venture to go on to N & P and then complain about being "showed down" by others. The N & P forum is bound to attract strong opinions and it is sometimes necessary to have a thick skin.

Those who use the remaining forums as well as N & P are usually thoughtful, kind and informative in their responses.

Finally, I would prefer if posts were not removed, unless it is at the poster's request.

I agree, I would prefer that poster's nasty comments were left for all to see and judge.

I could cope with Sean Bean any day of the week.

Hands off he’s mine! 😁

And mine! The thinking woman's bit of rough.

Still, the posters concerned were posting for weeks after that, so I doubt they were banned for that.

You're right.
I'm sure it's the old "I speak as I find" issue.
