What to wear ...........

We're in the south east and it's been almost chilly here today. It's made me look through my wardrobe. I need to buy some new bits and pieces for winter but just don't know what my style is any more. I'm nearly eighty, have quite a rural life, have clothes for more dressy occasions when needed, ie skirts and dresses but most of my day to day outfits are leggings and tops. As we get into winter I'll also wear M&S thermals as layers too. Had a look in M&S and Next today. All the warmish tops (sweat shirty things etc) are so unfeminine somehow, the shoulders droop down almost to the elbows, the slim fit tops would possibly need something over the top as the weather cools.

I've really just lost all sense of what would look good but also slightly fashionable. I did see some "comfort" jeggings in M&S and they really look comfortable but am I too old or does age not matter? I'm a size 14 bottom and possibly 12/14 top.

Can anyone give me some ideas of where to look for clothes that fit but are comfortable and look reasonable. I really have lost the plot!

Perfect.

I'd add 20 years and silver hair.

Black slim jeans, white Tshirt, lovely Chuck's, nice navy jacket, and pearls.

Personally I think the jacket is more of a French navy and is fine with the black jeans.
It's the white trainers that jar with me in this outfit... wrong colour and wrong style of footwear. In my opinion 😉

I live in the fens - no need for footwear apart from trainers.

I was impressed to Her style - a breath of fresh air.

I find Chuck's comfortable, easy to walk, easy to wash. Lovely colours.

Each to their own.

OP, I think Lands' End do nice outdoor clothing.

My everyday Autumn/Winter wardrobe is NYDJ cords/jeans/trousers, white shirts and cashmere jumpers.
I always have a nice belt and bag and polished shoes/boots.

Leggings and casual pull on stretch trousers are great but always wear with a long top/tunic or long shirt to come down over your bottom

Pick someone on TV eg Mary Berry and then ask Google where she buys her clothes. You can pick someone whose style you admire.

I wouldn't be seen dead in leggings or jeggings, some people look fine from the front but their backsides look awful.

Leggings, Jeggings, etc there is a lot of choice but tops are more problematic. I search for tunic dresses that are about 40 inches long. They are not easy to find. Then I have a Jumper or fleecy jacket I can wear over the top or a long winter coat with a hood. I am currently looking for another long tunic dress at a reasonable price and having no luck.

This style is what I feel comfortable in and think suits me.
Leggings to just below the knee in summer rather than cropped trousers, jeggings or warm slimline joggers with boots in winter.
Having a small bust measurement compared to hips I feel this is a good balanced shape.
I don't feel a need to spend a lot of money on day-to-day casual clothes so it's usually Matalan or George at Asda for tops, jumpers and joggers, M&S for the jeggings as I like their long length.
I had some nice dresses and casual lightweight trousers this summer from Amazon.
My main rule is nothing that needs ironing! 😬

The comments are very varied
Black and navy is bad taste. .. rubbish !
Buy something in a colour .. burgundy red olive green
Add a stripe top for layering
Be comfortable . Layers .. anything on your bottom with stretch .. there are wide legged knitted trousers that are less like Leggings- skinny leggings look wrong on older folk imo
Stick to knitted not woven for tops
Cardigans are on trend
Sleeveless knitted waistcoats
Knot a scarf round your neck
Get some smart comfy trainers
Long cardi worh pockets
We all need apocket

It’s an American newsletter but she gives great advice on taking casual clothes and dressing them up.

Mostly some excellent ideas. But please no scarves. They scream oldish lady trying to be trendy.

I agree about a cashmere jumper. I look after mine and wash them by hand and they have lasted years and years. They are very light as well as warm so pack up well and I stick one of my older ones in a plastic bag and put into a rucsac or bag when out walking anywhere as it is easy to get out if it turns cold. Then I also think that at this time of year you could wear some thermals underneath and still wear your summer trousers, which is what I do. It is quite cheering as you look quite summery still but are warm. I live in North Yorkshire and think you will be fine here. I would suggest that you have some good gloves and a hat with you so that you can put on or take off according to the weather. Look back at your older clothes and see which things you really used a lot and enjoyed and go for more of the same. To me the art of dressing well is choosing something that I feel comfortable in and once dressed I hardly need to be aware of the clothes , they just let me get on with things.

All entitled to wear what ever makes us feel good - advice yes - being prescriptive - I don’t think so.
Love yourself 😀🤗

I like Seasalt and Edinburgh Woollen Mill. I don’t wear leggings but slim cotton trousers or cords and jeans. And do a lot of layering with open shirts, cardigans and a scarf for warmth. I also sometimes like Tu at Sainsbury’s.

Sennelier1 Mon 02-Sept-24 16:39:35

I love Seasalt Cornwall, very comfortable, easy combining older pieces with new ones, classic and trendy at the same time. I'm 66. I think Marks&Spencer sells it, but here is the link :

Try Tu at Sainsburys
Very good quality and value

I love to wear a scarf with a plain jumper, it helps to put an outfit "together" this is one of my favourites, lovely cashmere jumper worn with jeans or a pair of smart black trousers, lipstick, a smile and I'm ready to go. I'm nearly 76 so I'm old and have absolutely no desire to be trendy. A scarf is also great for keeping the chills at bay and hiding a scrawny neck, I suffer with both in cold weather. I stick a black leather biker jacket on top if it's really cold! I think we can wear what we want when we get old, nothing is out of bounds if it makes you feel good.

My mum is 90 and looking very good in tunic tops from White Stuff and Sea Salt with leggings and cute ankle boots or trainers from Reiker. (With thermal tops underneath.) She also likes modern ‘tweedy’ skirts from M&S and Hobbs, with thick tights and sweaters. We both love charity shops and pick up lots of good stuff to refresh our wardrobes. I’m 70 - winter wear is boots, jeans and shirts with knitted tank tops or oversized sweaters. Do love a cashmere sweater - but sadly so do the moths!

Each to his own foxie48 . I am very nearly 80. I have a neighbour who always wears, andI mean always, matching top, trousers and a scarf. ‘To bring it together’ she says. As do you. I am determined not to do the same. I wear a lot of Toast clothes and chunky shoes. DMs , Birkenstocks etc. But no scarves

M0nica Tue 03-Sept-24 09:14:09

I have never mastered the art of wearing a scarf, they always slip, slide, dangle and fall off. I have narrow and sloping shoulders and anything on the shoulder that doesn't do up at the front slips off one or both shoulders, including scarfs, ccoats, cardigans, gilets etc etc.

Oh no! I am off to see a friend this morning. Thought I looked nice wearing my scarf but now I feel like an old woman. Thing is, it covers my wrinkly neck. smile

Nope I don't always wear a scarf but it was your comment "Please no scarves, they scream oldish lady trying to be trendy" that prompted my comment. tbh I thought it was a bit of a put down and I know lots of posters wear scarves as there have been threads about them.

Exactly my sentiments, foxie. I have dozens of scarves in multiple colours, and they complete an outfit for me!

JamesandJon33 Tue 03-Sept-24 14:57:19

Yes wear what you like ladies. I just don’t like to be predictable. And scarves are !!

V3ra Tue 03-Sept-24 16:19:32

I used to always wear a necklace but when I looked after babies and very young children regularly I used to wear a lightweight scarf instead, after I had a favourite necklace grabbed and broken one day.
More recently I prefer to just wear earrings but not necklaces for every day, unless I am "going out."

Ziplok Tue 03-Sept-24 16:57:32

I think a nice scarf can complete an outfit, depending what the outfit is. I certainly don’t think a scarf screams “oldish lady trying to be trendy” 😂😂
A good thing we all don’t think the same about clothes.
