MPs have voted by 348 to 228 in favour of Rachel Reeves’ plan to snatch Winter Fuel Payments of millions of hard-pressed pensioners

CariadAgain Tue 10-Sept-24 15:39:20

Oh FFS.....'scuse the French. Thanks for letting us know.

merlotgran Tue 10-Sept-24 15:42:07

Well, there’s a surprise. 😡

sharon103 Tue 10-Sept-24 15:42:56

I've posted the link. I hope it works

I watched the debate. There were some very moving speeches by opponents. Its all very well arguing that the SP will go up by £400 next year (but only for those on the new pension) but that does not solve the problem for those pensioners have their own "black hole" this winter.

I foresee that if they axe the CT single person discount there will be riots.

Glad to see so many MPs abstained. Two Tier has lost a lot of face over this,

Why is the increase only for people with the new pension?

That worries me more than losing the WFA. Living on your own means you have to bear the burden of the same expenses as a couple running a home.
Insurances, water rates, maintenance costs etc., have all gone up.

Predictable but thanks informing us.

Those who abstained should have voted 'no', but too gutless to do so. More concerned about their own position than their constituents.

Starmer should hang his head in shame for this too, but no doubt he, his harem and his cronies will be very comfortable every winter. He and always planned this but kept it to himself before the election.

Vile government and no doubt even more horror will be inflicted on ordinary people before they are done.

LOUISA1523 Tue 10-Sept-24 15:52:17

As expected

I dread to see what's coming in the budget.
I hope people remember this in the next local elections and in 5 years time.
56 cowards who daren't vote.
An absolute disgrace.

Yes,I had to deal with that. Why is it more expensive to be single than a couple?

I expect the MP's who voted yes will have a nice meal later in one of the subsidised Commons restaurants and a few drinks in the subsidised bar. Then home to their 2nd house where the heating is paid for by taxpayers.

There was a panellist on Jeremy Vine this morning. She was rather loud insisting that if a pensioner owns a million pound house they don't need help with fuel.

I beg to differ. Some people have owned their homes for decades. Obviously they didn't pay a million for it.

My neighbour was widowed in her 60s. She stayed in the family home and coped well. However she was cash poor as many people are.

The panellist kept going on about downsizing. As if it was simple. I'm sure most of us know the stress of buying/selling property. Why should she have to sell her home? And who would assist.

It's just unfair

Very well said!

Lots of people are cash poor, not just pensioners.

biglouis Tue 10-Sept-24 16:14:04

It doesnt take much intelligence or imagination to see that it is more expensive to be single. Those who live alone and pay living costs – such as rent, mortgage, utilities and food – do so from from one income. It's not as though everything halves when you go from two people to one. A one-bedroom flat isn’t half the price of a two-bedroom flat, for example. A room still has to be heated regardless of how many people use it.

Single person households get a very poor deal from council tax already. A single pension widow/er can be paying 3/4 of the council tax of a family of 4 living next door.

Something very wrong there.

So the state should subsidise somebody who can’t face the hassle of moving from a family home to one they can afford to buy and to run without state help. Surely that’s not what you mean?

Ilovecheese Tue 10-Sept-24 16:17:36

One decent Labour MP voted against. Starmer's party doesn't seem to approve of universal benefits, which are at the heart of the welfare state.

As will/could all of the MPs irrespective of their vote!

Well I’m sure you remember what happened when Thatcher tried to introduce “fairer” rates??

That is true, and a matter of shame in this country. The thing with pensioners though is that they are not often mobile or fit enough to keep warm with lots of exercise nor fit enough to do extra hours work, or find a better paid job.

So are you in favour of Child Benefit going back to being Universal?
