Enjoyable as always, but, surprised at the number of EU flags!
Comments please

I think there have been over 80 concerts in the proms this year, very varied in content and presentation - I usually watch Last Night, and I did think there was more needless talking than usual, but otherwise it wasn’t that different, they have always had eclectic choices.

I organise trips to classical concerts for U3A. All the concerts we have been to are full. There is an audience for classical concerts. It always has had a niche element to it.
My perspective is that a pop festival has pop music, a folk festival has folk music, and a classical festival has classical music. Then you can choose whatever floats your boat.
There have been lots of splendid classical concerts in this years prons, but the televised ones have been slightly off track.

Yes, there was definitely too much yack, yack, yack..
We still enjoyed it, though.

Just watched it. Amazing as ever.
What a genius Blake was.

RosiesMaw, I don't think you actually read my post beyond the first line.

Stop singing Rule Brittania and Land of Hope and Glory. Brittania doesn't rule the waves. We are not a Land of Hope and Glory, quite the reverse.

Nothing wrong with EU flags. We need that relationship.

We aren’t part of the EU anymore

Nope no license so don’t watch last night at the proms ( I used to love it back in the day when we very patriotic) or euro vision

We had a version of it here last month and all the audience were given British flags to wave. They played the British national anthem first ( no one joined in ) and then the Australian one ( everyone joined in) We looked across at each other and laughed. The music was good, especially the Welsh Male Voice choir. Lots of lovely Welsh songs.

Didn't they sing the Welsh National Anthem, nanna8?

They did but not at the start. Also Yma o Hyd . Most songs were in Welsh. Brought tears to me eyes. 🥲

They are just songs, not statements of fact. You don’t have to believe the words. They are good tunes and of historical interest. Rule Britannia dates from the 18th C, Land of Hope and Glory from early 20th C when empire building was what Britain did. The tune came first, the words added later (Elgar didn’t like the words).

Absolutely agree. It’s the same on radio 3. Talk talk talk when you just want to listen to the music. Drives me mad

It’s always annoyed me that the Beeb consider it’s okay for anyone to present programmes on music. Whereas they’d never dream of doing that on sports programmes.
I only watched the first half of Last Night which I thought excellent. From what I’ve read on here I’m really glad I didn’t watch the second half. Lulu?!

Lulu wasn't on Last Night of the Proms.

I think a poster said earlier that she switched channels and watched Lulu on another programme.

I have not been to a prom for a few years, used to go regularly but found in recent years the scores were less traditional and lots of new pieces. That is partly what the proms are about, showcasing new works but I likes what I knows.

The last night was good in the first half and some lovely choral stuff but I gave up on the second half.

I have not watched many this year but those I have seen seem to have fewer young people in the audience. When I regularly promenaded in my youth the majority were young.

lamusica Mon 16-Sept-24 17:32:04

Oh I must have misread something on here! Well anyway that’s a relief! 😂

pamdixon Mon 16-Sept-24 17:56:11

It was definitely dumbed down which was a real pity. Stephen Hough play only one movement of the Saint Saens was a total travest in my opinion!!! But having said that the second half was not messed around tooooo much. Nothing wrong with some good old patriotic songs.
Definitely to much chatting from the presenters etc

Etoile2701 Mon 16-Sept-24 19:43:13

So pleased. We should never have 1eft. If I had been there I would have been proud to wave the EU flag.

Etoile2701 Mon 16-Sept-24 19:45:38

What is wrong with Gary?

Etoile2701 Mon 16-Sept-24 19:47:36

Totally agree.

We are no longer in the EU but much of the classical music played at the Proms originated in Europe. Brexit has been a disaster for trade, especially for most small, exporting businesses. We need that relationship without lots of customs paperwork and I hope Starmer can set us on the path to it.
