Breaking news all over the telly.

Elon Musk tries to stir it on his own platform,

Elon Musk deleted a post Monday morning that questioned why former President Donald Trump has faced two apparent assassination attempts in recent months while President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have not encountered any.

Musk later claimed the post was a joke.

“And no one is even trying to assassinate Biden/Kamala 🤔,” Musk wrote in the now-deleted X post.

Musk initially resisted numerous calls throughout Sunday night to delete the post. In one post responding to a demand to take down his remarks, Musk doubled down: “No one has even tried to do so is the point I’m making and no one will.”

But Musk was ultimately persuaded by an X post that said Musk’s “obvious intent” may be misinterpreted.

“Fair enough. I don’t want to do what they have done, even in jest,” Musk responded. He later posted several times that the deleted post had been a joke.

The alleged shooter appears in court this morning but there is no information as yet as to what the charges will be.

Namsnanny Mon 16-Sept-24 17:20:02

Does it matter what the charges are?
It will be spun one way for Kamala fans and the other for Trump fans, so everyone will be happy.

Judging by the last attempt it will all be forgotten about pretty soon anyway.

The only thing that will be remembered about the election is cats. By both sides.

Funny, the last time there was something about a pussy too, I seem to remember.

What did cats ever do to get embroiled in so much political dirt throwing?

Its a piece of the jigsaw in a very dramatic and fraught election, the result will make a difference to the UK in several serious ways. If Trump doesnt win, what will happen?

But to answer your question, it only matters if you are interested.

I wondered if the charges would be full out attempt to assassinate and also to see if and how it will be used/spun politically (as Musk tried to)

So far Routh has only been been charged with two counts, including possession of a firearm while a convicted felon and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number.

He's got a long record. the sheriff who arrested him said he greeted them amicably as if "he had come from a walk in the park."

Why are Americans such bad shots? I would be happy to open a GO FUND ME page to hire a professional.

Only kiddin!

He didnt get a shot off..he seems another "off his trolley".

Trump already blaming....he said it was the democrats violent rhetoric, which seems a bit disingenuous given his own...

Allira

His security can't be very efficient.

"He is not the President, so his security is not as much." From an American reporting on this. Beside how can a few men cover a golf course, they are huge in the US as they are here.

If you've listened, she is as bad as he is in incitement. God help America when either one gets elected.

nanna8 Tue 17-Sept-24 06:47:43

God help America - and God help the rest of us . Collateral damage. We always, always get drawn into America's wars. Can you think of a recent time they were not at war somewhere?

M0nica Tue 17-Sept-24 08:20:01

Why is it a news event? FBI found the man during a routine sweep of each hole on the golf course ahead of Trump playing it. Isn't that what they are meant to do?

The news event would be, if they hadn't done the sweep and the potential assassin, succeeded in firing shots at Trump, successful or not.

Its a bit of a 'shock horror, cat kills mouse' news story.

Agree and Biden is trying to get us to provide long range missiles to Ukraine, to hit Russia, what the hell . Why don't they do it. No the UK is being used as the lap dog of an American president again, and Starmer is falling for it just like Blair did.

Mojack26 Tue 17-Sept-24 12:40:01

Agree, probably organised ithimself!

Aveline Tue 17-Sept-24 12:43:49

My first thought exactly. All organised by Trump to get Trump a sympathy vote.

Not an accurate picture:

in the recent talks on the Ukraine in discussion on long range with UK/NATO missiles promoted by requests from Zelensky....

Biden has most definitely not agreed and is in fact was the most unwilling in recent discussions - whether its internal US politics just before an election or a determined policy is anyones guess. The Storm Shadow missiles rely partly on US navigational technology.

As regards the UK (working alongside NATO)
and in the UK cross party discussions reveal that

"A number of former Conservative defence secretaries, including Ben Wallace, have urged the PM to lift restrictions" . Ed Davey also has said the same.

some details
www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cr75r70jgp7o
The FT (behind paywall on second reading) says that Biden might be coming round)
and its all due to be discussed at the UN in around 12 days.

The instigators are NATO and the missiles cannot be used without US co-operation.

ANMI52 Tue 17-Sept-24 13:48:16

I notice that the BBC continues to refer to it as as ‘apparent’ assassination attempt.

Wyllow3 Tue 17-Sept-24 13:54:22

So are CNN and other US outlets.

Due caution until actual charges brought?

sazz1 Tue 17-Sept-24 15:03:11

I think these 2 attempts on an elderly man's life are disgusting. Whatever you think of Trump, and tbh I don't like him or his policies, he doesn't deserve this. It's a wonder at his age that he hasn't had a heart attack or stroke from the stress of these attacks. Terrible thing to do and I hope the perpetrator is jailed for a very long time.

mh1953 Tue 17-Sept-24 15:21:08

It amazes me that Donald Trump, with a PROVEN 4 year record of improving the economy, keeping the border safe, the world at peace, can get such cynical, ugly comments and accusations, and most of you aren't even Americans! Let's see some proof of your comments and theories, do your own research without using sponsored websites. Hating anyone without proof because of heresay and rumors only makes us the one with the problem.

albertina Tue 17-Sept-24 15:22:05

The first attempt got him lots of sympathy and increased support. For that reason I smell a big fat rat here.

But I’ve heard the way he speaks to and about women with my own ears.

Not always Nanba8 - they came to OUR rescue in WW2!

CariadAgain Tue 17-Sept-24 15:51:01

Don't quote me on this - but I think there's just been a 3rd attempt at him.

All of the US presidential hopefuls give me the heeby-jeebies = can't stand any of them. But, if we've now got up to the 3rd attempt = time for someone to be "Asking Questions" about just who hates democracy so much that they're trying to subvert it. Well they all try and subvert it - but this is so blatant.

catd Tue 17-Sept-24 18:56:06

Wonder how much he and his team decided to pay the so called assassin. He seemed pretty calm when he was arrested. I wouldn't put anything past Trump

Wyllow3 Tue 17-Sept-24 19:01:45

Will it make them look again at gun laws at last? Unfortunately I don't expect a positive answer from Trump.

M0nica Tue 17-Sept-24 19:23:08

No, of course it won't, if Trump had his way it would just mean more people being given he right to carry guns.

Wyllow3 Tue 17-Sept-24 19:29:19

Trump has used the alleged attempt to blame the democrats

edition.cnn.com/2024/09/17/politics/trump-incendiary-claims-analysis/index.html

But the man held currently on gun ownership charges has not been charged with further offences.
