Magnesium supplements

Hi. Does anyone take these and find them useful ? I’ve been looking into supplements to help with my sleep and anxiety.
It seems these could help with these things along with cramp, and heart palpitations. It seems it’s difficult to get enough through a good diet alone. We need 320g a day, a banana which is high in magnesium is only 30g.

Anyone remember Milk of Magnesia?

Weren’t we all advised to take it when we were pregnant in the sixties?

I hear a lot of people swear by magnesium butter. You apparently rub some into the soles of your feet before you go to sleep.

I have a magnesium spray that you can use on your feet but I have to admit I never used to feel that it helped at all. I assume the dosage would be quite low from the spray so maybe that's why.

The butter would at least make your feet nice and soft at the same time smile

A friend recommended magnesium flakes for the bath yesterday. She bought some on Amazon after her daughter found them very helpful

Thank you. I was wondering about the bath salts and sprays there seems to be an awful lot of choice at the moment. Magnesium seems to be the in thing.
I’m going to try a low dose tablet first see how I get on. A lot of things upset my stomach, but then at least there’s other things to try.

I think I am unique as I take magnesium in capsule form ( from Amazon) and whereas I suffered with loose stools despite eating appropriately the opposite happens which delighted me.

I do. I take Wild Nutrition on subscriptions and have really seen the difference in my sleep, cramps, nerves...

I take Magnesium Taurate for Ectopic Heartbeats. It is suggested by Dr Sanjay Gupta a cardiologist in York who does a lot of work with patients with premature heartbeats ( missed beats)

I drink turmeric tea first thing in the morning (I got organic turmeric tea bags on line) AND now take magnesium. Hard to be sure but I think it is helping especially with sleep and aches. Also I take a supplement for eyes to reduce risk of macular degeneration - called Macushield.

Yes, I had the same side effects. Apparently there are types which don't cause this but I do not know the name

Seajaye Wed 18-Sept-24 12:46:33

Sorry, previous message was garbled, I was replying to the comment about loose stools. If anyone knows of any type of magnesium supplement that doesn't have this effected be pleased to hear.

I use magnesium spray on my upper arms and round my neck at night. It has helping with lack of sleep, cramps and general leg issues plus aches and pains.

These have been a life changer for me! I take two capsules half hour before bedtime to help my restless legs, and to relax, helps calm, great for stress. I take the dr vegan ones, they are citrate based which help you absorb them easier. I get mine on monthly subscription so it is cheaper and I do not have to worry about remembering to buy them, delivered straight to my door. I tried cheaper alternatives which had no effect, these ones top quality here is the link :- drvegan.com/products/magnesium?_pos=1&_psq=magnesium&_ss=e&_v=1.0

i found some in the house so took one, they are magnesium with vitamin B6.
i don't eat meat, so think i should take Vit B6 and ?B12.
anyone know?

I know vegans are advised to take B12 supplements. Eggs and dairy products do contain B12, but at lower levels than red meat, poultry and fish. So vegetarians might well benefit from taking B12.
www.webmd.com/diet/b12-rich-foods

The body gets worse at absorbing B12 from food as it gets older, so older people are more likely to benefit from B12 supplements.

B vitamins are water-soluble so the body will just excrete what it doesn’t need.

I take Magnesium Taurate for constant Atrial Fibrilation I had in June and it got rid of it after 3 or 4 days!
I have continued to take it as it was recommended by a cardiologist.

Polly7 Wed 18-Sept-24 13:39:59

My dad swore Bymilk of magnesium 😊
Magnesium is important to help you absorb calcium so it's a win-win. So the calcium doesn't go into the arteries, but to the bones where they needed

Gotellthebees Wed 18-Sept-24 14:00:58

I take one vegan multi vitamin per day, and during the the winter months I take vit d3 Otherwise, I get what I need from a varied diet; tofu, nuts, seeds legumes, vegetables and fruit as I can't afford supplements. There seems to be several different types of magnesium supplements?

Gotellthebees Wed 18-Sept-24 14:04:27

Also, I've heard magnesium is best absorbed through the skin,so a bath with magnesium salts may help.

grandtanteJE65 Wed 18-Sept-24 14:11:32

Magnesium did not work for me and tended to upset my stomach.

My remedy for cramp and muscular stiffness or slight pain, is to drink two or three large glasses of cold water, early in the day. In all about a

One warning - I ended up in hospital for ten days because I was suffering from diverticulitis and didn’t know that the magnesium supplements I was taking counteracted the antibiotics I was given. I didn’t mention them to the doctor because I didn’t think of them as medication.

I take turmeric and resveratrol and liquid glucosamine for arthritis and managed to get rid of pain in an arthritic knee with those.

GreyhairedWarrior Wed 18-Sept-24 14:36:43

Sorry - should have included this detail -the reason for the hospital stay was that I ended up with a small bowel perforation and had to be on a drip and nil by mouth.

Allira Wed 18-Sept-24 14:42:40

Thanks for the warning GreyhairedWarrior

Yes, some of these supplements can interfere with medication so it's wise to check.

Hope you're recovered now.

Thanks for this thread! I have various painful conditions and thanks to this thread I have started today on three different supplements, Tumeric, Essential-Omega-3 and Magnesium.

🙏🙏🤞🤞

Omaoma57 Wed 18-Sept-24 15:43:19

I use a magnesium spray and moisturise it into my feet or calves…helps with restless legs, cramp and definitely aids sleep.

2oaktrees Wed 18-Sept-24 16:10:42

Thanks to this thread I looked it up on line and magnesium can lower your BP and may not be good with losartan. They request checking with dr.
