A post this morning by Infoman, has prompted me to start this thread.
The first LP I purchased was, Simon and Garfunkel's Greatest Hits, my first single, The most Beautiful Girl in the World, by Charlie Rich.
Working over the summer as a student in the Knorr factory, enabled me to buy my first record player.
I'm getting all nostalgic! 😉

Highlights from Peter Grimes by Benjamin Britten.

La Fille Mal Gardée ballet by Herold.

Or possibly Prokofiev’s Classical Symphony. I can’t quite remember now.

And Baggs Sibelius 5th. I am glad I was not the only nerdy child who liked classical music.
My first LP record was 'Night on a Bald Mountain' by Modest Mussorgsky. I went to see Disney 'Fantasia' in the cinema and loved the music.
My father liked classical music too and we had loads of 78s but mostly baroque stuff.

Why would we have to have been nerdy to like classical music?

I bought my fist singles when I was 11 and was given a record player for my birthday, combined with passing the 11 plus.

My parents had classical records.

I'm surprised that you two had sufficient funds to buy LPs.

When I was 17 I spent the summer working in a Methodist guest house in Hastings. The first LP I bought, with my first EVER wage packet was the double Led Zeppelin one - with The Song Remains The Same extended version. It was for my bf who later became my husband. Sadly he left us and I didn't at the time insist he also left the LP! I'd love to find a copy again.

The first single I bought was Black Night by Deep Purple. I was a wee rocker! I can't remember the first album I bought. The first one I listened to was Alice Cooper in first year so I would have been about 12. A new friend played it at her house and I was very impressed.

My first single was I Surrender by Rainbow. I bought a first album by The Police from Christmas money and my brother bullied me into taking it back and exchanging for a Madness album.

First single, Fall in Love with you, Cliff Richatd. First LP, With the Beatles. Shared singles with friends, mainly Everlies, stacking them up on my red Dansette record player ( bought second hand) big favourite was Ricky Nelson You are the only One. My Mum used to groan when I played it over and over by leaving the stacking arm back!
Then came Things Bobby Darin and what have they done to the Rain Searchers. Oh my lost youth!

Ellie Anne Fri 20-Sept-24 16:24:46

First single was ‘the first time’ by Adam faith and I think the first lp was by the Bachelors.
