A post this morning by Infoman, has prompted me to start this thread.
The first LP I purchased was, Simon and Garfunkel's Greatest Hits, my first single, The most Beautiful Girl in the World, by Charlie Rich.
Working over the summer as a student in the Knorr factory, enabled me to buy my first record player.
I'm getting all nostalgic! 😉

I was in bed after an accident and my brother brought me
“Take a Message To Mary” by the Everly Brothers. I’m surprised I haven't seen many more of theirs

I wanted Elvis Presley’s Return to Sender. My father came home one day and handed me a record, saying that it was the one that I wanted. Unfortunately it was the cheap version! In those days, Woolworths sold copies of current pop records, by, of course, unknown singers. A bit of a let down!

The first LP was The Beach Boys greatest hits. I think it was about 35 shillings to buy. I remember getting off the bus stop one stage earlier and walking to save the money up.

I used to do that too but mainly so I could buy single cigarettes lol...they were the days!!

Boolya Fri 20-Sept-24 13:46:32

Single - Come Outside, Mike Sarne (I was in his fan club!)
LP Dave Brubeck - Time Out

We never had a record player until I left school and saved up my wages to buy one. My 1st LP was Rod Stewart's Every Picture Tells a Story and single Devil's Answer by Atomic Rooster 1972

Cliffs Living Doll was the first single that I bought myself but on my parents, gramophone when I was very young I loved hearing Teddy Bears Picnic with Dicky Bird Hop on the reverse side. Now I shall have both those playing in my head all afternoon🤣.

Seeing the comment about Go Now by the Moody Blues (wonderful!). When it first came out I had a holiday job in a relative’s Record Shop in London.
We sold so many copies the first week that the records were not put on the shelves, but just kept in a big box under the counter to aid the rapid sales of them. We sold hundreds.

Lizzie44 Fri 20-Sept-24 12:53:36

Green Door, Frankie Vaughan (1956

My first purchase was Apeman by the Kinks. Next was When I’m Dead and Gone by McGuinness Flint. Seems such a long time ago.

First single was "I wanna hold your hand" (Beatles). Had I been allowed, and had there been a record shop in our town then, it would have been "Venus in blue jeans" - Mark Wynter, I think. When I was 13, our Guide Company went on a visit to Guide HQ in London, and before we went home, we stopped at a Lyons Corner House where they were playing it. We sang it all the way home. Our Guide Captain was NOT impressed!!
I never had the courage of my convictions to buy any Rolling Stones records when I was a teenager! I had to wait till I was in my 60s till I succumbed (Shhh! I play them when DH isn't home wink)

TheWeirdo Fri 20-Sept-24 12:31:47

The Everly Brothers Golden Hits 1973 when I was 8!

Marmight Fri 20-Sept-24 12:30:38

Single the theme to Z Cars. How sad 🤣
LP Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture. I’d gone a bit upmarket by then!

TheWeirdo Fri 20-Sept-24 12:27:10

I LOVE that song!

Supergran1946 Fri 20-Sept-24 12:19:53

“What do you want to make those eyes at me for” by Emil Ford. It was a 45 rpm record purchased for 4/6d in late 50’s I think.

Bluecat Fri 20-Sept-24 12:14:35

The first record I bought was an EP (remember them?) It was The Universal Soldier by Donovan, and the first LP I owned was his Fairytale.

The first LP I bought with my pocket money was Sgt. Pepper by the Beatles. I bought it as a birthday present for my sister and remember being impressed by my own generosity!

Mojack26 Fri 20-Sept-24 12:08:36
