Breakfast in bed?

I was listening to the radio and they were discussing this, and I realised I have never had as much as a cup of coffee in bed. I’m not counting things I’ve eaten or drunk when I was ill, but just having breakfast in bed as a ‘treat’.
I agreed with the fellow who said that if you have to sit up you’re as well in a chair, and if you’re in a chair you may as well get up properly.
And, how do you avoid crumbs or spillages?

I never have breakfast in bed, and don't think I would like it
I have a compulsion to get up the minute the alarm goes off.
But if I ever get married again.....
who knows.

After DH retired, the first awake would make tea and bring it back to bed. Occasionally we’d have breakfast in bed too. So decadent! On his last day it was his ‘turn’. We drank the tea and 30 minutes later he died. What would I give now to have tea brought to me in the morning. I like to continue the routine so most mornings I plod downstairs, make it myself and very often porridge or fruit & yoghurt and maybe toast too and return to the comfort of my bed. Life is too short to worry about crumbs under the duvet.

All I’m lacking is a lacy knitted bedjacket

And an ‘Anna’ to place the tray on the bed…

“Good morning m’lady, did you sleep well?”

Often on a Sunday. Since he retired DH is our chef and will bring me a full English. He doesn’t care to eat in bed himself so eats his downstairs and I’ll enjoy mine in solitary splendour while reading my book and/or listening to the radio. Bliss. And I have it on a tray so never drop crumbs.

Today we’re going to the Remembrance service so will have a brunch when we get back. At the table. smile

I love my tea and toast in bed. Nibbling away whilst dh is sleeping. I live the peace and quiet.

Greyduster

My breakfast in bed is a cup of coffee and two digestive biscuits. Eating actual food in bed has never appealed to me even when I’ve been ill.

Mine too!
I don’t eat breakfast unless it’s a brunch late morning and made by someone else 😊

No I m another who se never had breakfast in bed and don’t think I ve ever wanted it I m pretty much a get up soon as I wake up sort of person

I'm another in the husband category that takes my wife a cup of tea at the sound of her stirring. A second cup thirty minutes or so later is also a regular occurrence.

If he’s up first, dh will often bring me a cup of tea in bed.

Before he retired, when Sunday morning lie-ins were special and he was always working long hours, I’d often take him some toast and marmalade and the papers.

Otherwise, no.

Thank you Maggiemaybe

I had some minor surgery in a private clinic and the breakfast in bed on a nicely dressed tray with folding legs, was delicious, I scoffed everything in sight.
Never at home though and the cup of tea brought by late DH is sorely missed😢

Oh my goodness, tea is bed first thing is sheer luxury that we both enjoy. Generally take it in turns, but I'm often awake first so it tends to me that brings it up.

I once found half a ham sandwich in our bed 😳I must have left it there when I snuck upstairs to have lunch in bed!

One of the many small sadnesses about widowhood is nobody bringing me tea in bed. If I have to get up to make it I might as well get dressed and stay downstairs. DS was staying overnight on Saturday and he brought me tea in bed before going for a run. Luxury!

I have coffee in bed every morning and I bring my daughter her breakfast to eat in bed.

Spilt stuff on the duvet, marmalade on the pillow? No thanks.

I wake up very early, around 430, so make myself a drink and return to the warmth of my bed to read, and mess around with my iPad.
When DH was alive, I’d get up and do the same downstairs. He hated any sort of food, especially crumbs, in the bed.
The children brought me breakfast in bed once, on Mothering Sunday, and loathed it! (Of course, I never told them…)

The late Dame Barbara Cartland, in her biography, said that nobody had breakfast in bed unless they were an invalid. The image of the maid tottering in with an enormous tray was a myth, and quite impractical. She dismissed the idea outright.

Eating in bed is a necessary feature of being in hospital, I don’t want to replicate it at home.

My ex husband liked to make us full English breakfast on Sundays and bring it upstairs with the papers, with Frost On Sunday on the tv. As soon as I was (happily) single again I got rid of the tv, cancelled the newspaper delivery, and have never had food in my bedroom again.

twinnytwin Sun 17-Nov-24 12:20:30

My ex husband wouldn't get out of bed without having first drunk a cup of coffee delivered by me - work days included. My DH has brought me a cup of tea every morning (after unloading the dishwasher) for the last 30+ years. Lovely. I make the second cups.

Lizzie44 Sun 17-Nov-24 12:21:25

Breakfast in bed? Crumbs, no!

MissAdventure Sun 17-Nov-24 12:22:21

I certainly wouldn't let Barbara Cartland's opinion sway my choice.
I used to enjoy breakfast in bed, but not these days.

grandtanteJE65 Sun 17-Nov-24 12:24:23

It is no treat to me, as I spent two months ill in bed three years in succession as a child, so breakfast in bed, or breakfast eaten at the table but still clad in nightie and dressing-gown spells illness to me. Not something I ever enjoyed!

biglouis Sun 17-Nov-24 12:28:05

I would only have breakfast in bed if someone brought it to me. Iving alone I make my own so there is no point in going back to bed to eat it. However I do often put my feet up on the settee and throw a blanket over my legs.
