Welcome dear Kitcheners. I am very happy to be opening the door to my favourite Granspals.

We have a new Aga. The atmosphere is cosy ' The buffet is ready for the sharing of. In the quiet corner we have music to suit all tastes. There are reclining chairs and cosy blankets and if all one wants to do is relax, then please do so.

By the way, it is a dear pal Baggs birthday tomorrow. There is a birthday cake in the larder. There is also plenty of Champagne with which to toast her.

I am off to my bed.

Thank you all for being extra special people. flowers moon]

For anyone who knows the area, the wedding is at Styal Lodge and we shall be staying at Stanneylands afterwards.
( if I live that long)

Hello kitchen people.

It’s always good to hear news of a wedding!

OH and I have binge watched Alice Roberts’ Digging for Britain programme on iPlayer. It was the final episode tonight.

I was quite busy today so I was in bed before 10 pm. Our cleaner came and I did a Waitrose shop.

After lunch I popped over the road to a friend’s monthly craft afternoon . I took sone chocolate spiced muffins which went down well. Someone else brought cinnamon buns. I think we ate more than crafted!

Sleep 💤 tight.

Good morning all and a far from happy chappy here today.
The highly recommended decorator will get no recommendations from me.
It is his timekeeping, I have little evidence of his work so far.
Yesterday he worked from after 10am until 4. It was mainly preparation.
Today he has just turned up, 10;55.
He has brought a lamp with him so hopefully he will work later today.
I hate people in the house anyway and this is stressing me out.
He has already said he won’t be working Friday morning, something to do with his son.
I can see the job stretching into the weekend, just one room which was stripped and empty ready to start.
Sorry for then moan but I needed it.

Hi all, weddings galore on here, how joyous, I’m so glad yours went well SueD a smashing family event.
utbb that’s how tradesmen work unfortunately, they go out to get supplies and prep is important. But just think, this time next week it’ll be spanking new.
Appalling soop I didn’t realise this lack of significant advice caused your hernia, you’re of a far more even temperament than me.
Quiz was, as usual, great fun last night, the last round was ‘cheese or motorway service station?’ 9/10 for us, worryingly!
Washing and housework today, it’s a little warmer, sadly at this time of year the rear garden doesn’t keep any sunshine for long.

TillyTrotter Tue 14-Jan-25 17:27:27

I would like to bring Spain with brook but then again I seem to be attached to my warm kitchen. I’m turning leftovers into all manner of recipes that are being tucked away in the freezer. Most unlike me!

soop your stoicism is admirable - no one should suffer as you do.

utbb We had a decorator like yours once and he came recommended.
He kept shall we say ‘casual hours. I lost patience on the day he kept on working until 10 pm “to catch up”.
You will be so glad when he has gone.

Wishing all a peaceful evening.

‘Evening All’.

I have half a shoulder of lamb roasting in the oven. It’s smells delicious. All veggies prepped and we shall eat about 7:30pm. Himself has just poured me a schooner of HBC sherry. Just the ticket while I mess about on here for an hour.

I accompanied my stepfather to his annual renal out patient appointment. All is well. The nurses couldn’t believe he’s 92y. He stands so straight and dresses so smartly. 💙

The consultant was amazed asking him about his hobbies “I get tired now doctor after gardening for about 20 minutes but I’ve learned to pace myself with that and housework. Little and often works best for me these days”. He was telling the doctor his brother will be 100y at the end of summer, all being well.

On our way home we talked about telegrams from the King. I’m sure someone has to apply? Anyway my stepfather said he will discuss it with one of his second cousins in Wester Ross this week. 😁

Lovely news about your daughter’s wedding SueDonim! It all sounds fabulous and I’ll bet you’ll have many superb photos to look back on.

utbb hold tight, you’re getting there. Soon your house will be home again and you can decide how much (or little) you want to share it. I think you’ve earned some peace and quiet. And contentment.

As my lovely late mother in law used to say “Please others and you displease yourself”.

Look on Gov.uk for the application form for a card from the King.
I got one sent for my parent's 60th wedding anniversary. I had to send a marriage certificate.

Pittcity Tue 14-Jan-25 17:32:21

Just noticed that if the person lives in the UK and receives a State Pension the 100th birthday card is sent automatically.

Redcar Tue 14-Jan-25 17:36:18

sueDonim the wedding sounds perfect, so pleased all went well.utbb how frustrating that your decorator is so casual about timekeeping. I’m not keen on having workmen in the house either, a necessary evil at times!
I had a walk this morning and met a friend walking her dog, and another couple whose DD was a friend of my DD1. Nice to catch up with people after being indoors for so long. My hip and back are aching though.
Saw my friend with dementia this afternoon, she doesn’t recognise me any more, and I don’t think she recognises her family either sadly.
Have a peaceful evening everyone.

Oh that’s interesting. Thanks Pittcity!

‘Evening All’.

I’ve had a very lazy day which ought not to surprise you. I tidied a cupboard or two mostly out of boredom and wrapped our birthday present for L’il Miss - who will be eight years old in a few days’ time. Himself went to the Macmillan Centre for a reflexology session, which he really enjoyed.

We’ve just had pie and peas for us tea. I have a friend who says that and it always makes me smile!

I’m going to find something to watch on Netflix now - Ending, the day as I started it! x

GrannyGravy13 Tue 14-Jan-25 20:03:08

I have also been clearing out cupboards today FGT2

Well overdue sort of my wardrobe, and tidied up my handbags and shoes (how did I accumulate so many 🤷‍♀️)

Settled on the sofa to watch Martin Lewis tell us how to save money ££££

UTBB unfortunately builders are a law unto themselves, I do hope your room is finished soon.

Pleased your DD’s wedding was a success SD

Thinking of all in the quiet corner 🙋‍♀️

Grannmarie Tue 14-Jan-25 20:18:26

Good evening, Soop and lovely Kitchen people. 🥰

SueD, your Highland wedding sounds just perfect, memories to treasure. 💕
UsedToBeBlonde, sorry to hear you're feeling so stressed, hopefully this time next week it will all be done and you can look forward to furnishing the room for your future comfort. 🤞 Your forthcoming wedding will give you something to look forward to.
Redcar, so sad that your dear friend doesn't recognise you or her loved ones any more. We've been there with beloved family members, it's just heartbreaking. All you can do is make their present as pleasant as possible, and support the family. I'm sure they appreciate your visits.

I've had a few stressful days myself, lots of running about after a faulty product, then this morning I had to call the AA out cos my car wouldn't start...my day did not go according to plan! However its fixed now🤞 , I was panicking because my friend is so looking forward to resuming our Coffee Mornings tomorrow and it just wouldn't be possible without my car.

I'm not long home from the Rosary for a former colleague who died recently. I have a staffroom photo from the 80s, we are all young teachers, wives and mothers, happy and smiling. Wonderful memories. I shared it with her daughters this evening.

We've had quite a few bereavements recently, I'm turning into a professional mourner! It certainly makes me think about putting my affairs in order... then the thought of that distresses me and I try to avoid it. Sorry for rambling on.

Wishing everyone a peaceful Tuesday evening and a good night's sleep. TOYA, NNGB.

Usedtobeblonde Tue 14-Jan-25 20:33:08

When my mum was 100 I had to apply for a card for her, that was in 2004 so maybe things have changed since then although when my H and I celebrated 60 years of marriage 7 years ago , my D applied for one from the Queen which we received with pleasure.

Usedtobeblonde Tue 14-Jan-25 20:38:27

The decorator worked until 6:30 pm. However it wasn’t without drama, I had asked my GD to check the wallpaper all had the same batch number, she said she did but obviously didn’t know what that meant.
3 rolls did not match.
All is well, the decorator went to B&Q on his way home and managed to change them.
Drama over.
I can’t wait for it to be finished.

brook2704 Tue 14-Jan-25 21:35:51

So good to hear the wedding went so well SueD, it sounds just perfect especially with the snow falling too and all the family there ❤️

I know the Stanneylands Hotel Uttb, I’ve been to a wedding reception there myself a few years back and it was lovely - something for you to look forward to. Pleased you got the wallpaper all sorted out ok too

Hope there’s no more sad occasions grannmarie but happier things to look forward to from now on

redcar sorry to hear about your friend not recognising you 💐

It’s been another lovely day here, mainly out and about walking and stopping at various places - like you do! Warm in the sunshine but a bit windy today along the sea front. We found a sheltered spot and sat for ages watching the waves roll in - nothing too busy but simple pleasures to enjoy

Thinking of everyone in the quiet corner, sending a virtual hug to all x

Grannmarie Tue 14-Jan-25 22:20:27

Thank you, brook ❤️
Your 'simple pleasures' sound idyllic, enjoy!

Ladyleftfieldlover Tue 14-Jan-25 22:35:46

Hello kitchen people.

It sounds like we’ve all been busy. I made lemon iced cream this morning. I also decorated a cake to take to my friend’s this afternoon. A lemon and blackberry cake - three layers filled and topped with chocolate fudge icing. It sounds odd but it was delicious.

While OH watched football I watched Simon Schama’s programme on iPlayer. Highly recommended. I then watched part of a programme on Alan Bennett, who is now 90.

I’m now in bed. I have to be up early for a dental appointment. I hope I don’t need any treatment as it’s the U3A lunch!

Sleep 💤 tight.

soop Wed 15-Jan-25 12:44:09

Thank you for all the happy news. A gentle hug for our Granspals who have sadness to bear. The quiet corner is always a place of refuge.

Mr Soop is to have further scalp surgery on Friday. He will stay in hospital overnight. Our friends are taking me under their wing, so I won't be alone.

It is a glorious day. The birds are chirping loudly. I'm about to ride my exercise bike to no place. As I do so, the birds seem to hear the music that I play and congregate on a bush just outside the window. they never fail to make me smile.

Stay safe and enjoy the companionship that our kitchen offers. smile

TillyTrotter Wed 15-Jan-25 15:19:44

Once again we are shrouded in mist in my part of the country. It is most eerie, and no breeze.
May this scalp surgery be Mr soop ‘s last, his poor head will be so sore.

I tried to re-interest myself in knitting but it hasn’t worked and I’ve found “A Place in the Sun” more satisfying.
I applaud the ladies tidying cupboards, wardrobes and drawers. It is what I should do.
Do any of you find any treasures?

Yiayia4 Wed 15-Jan-25 18:09:45

It’s been misty here also TillyTrotter and very damp.

DIL has gone back to work today,I think it will be good for her to keep busy.We collected DGS4 from school this afternoon and took him to his trampoline lesson. He seems to be doing very well it’s ideal for a boy who can’t keep still.🤣

Fish pie for dinner, enjoy your evening everyone

Redcar Wed 15-Jan-25 19:49:37

soop I hope that your DH’s surgery goes well and that he won’t need any further operations. It’s so good that you have kind friends who will look after you while your DH is in hospital. I find it quite comforting to hear the birds singing bravely while the weather is so gloomy. When I was in labour with my DD1 in February 1976, I could hear a blackbird outside the window, singing his heart out, it really cheered me up!
yia it’s been very cloudy here all day and damp too. I did manage a walk this morning and met up with some dog walking friends.
tillyTrotter I’ve been putting off doing a complete overhaul of my wardrobes for some weeks now. I planned it in my head at about 3 o’clock one morning, but haven’t had the courage or energy to actually do it! I certainly won’t find any treasures but will no doubt find a load of things I can’t get into any more!
Have a peaceful evening everyone.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Wed 15-Jan-25 20:40:17

‘Evening All’.

We are just home. I went out at 5pm to watch L’il Miss at her swimming lesson. Delightful to be with her in the showers & changing rooms where she tells me she might be interested in learning the violin “like mummy did at junior school”. If she’s interested lessons start after half term in school. Hmm!

I got home at 6:30pm and we decided to go over the road for a curry. Very nice. Our first “date night” of the NY.

Pj’s on now and I’m about to finish watching ‘Operation Mincemeat’ with Colin Firth that I was enjoying last night. It’s got really great actors in it.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 15-Jan-25 21:27:38

Hi folks,

I must own up to being a total pushover, the 9yr old is here for his sleepover, he has to be at school for 8am tomorrow.

Normally he would be in bed after his story by 8.45pm, not tonight though. DH is out and GS asked to look back at photos on my iPad.

Totally forgot the time and have just tucked him in 🙀

Sleep well 🙋‍♀️

cornergran Wed 15-Jan-25 22:47:29

Venturing out of the quiet corner to send best wishes to Mr Soop for Friday.

That would be me grannyg, sometimes memories mean more than bed times. I’m sure you’ll still both be up and ready in the morning.

Goodnight everyone. TOYA.

Nannytopsy Thu 16-Jan-25 06:18:02

It’s 4am but that’s better than last night when I woke up at 2am!
Best wishes soops. We have a lady at church in a similar situation as mr s.
