Police knocking on your door

(145 Posts)
LadyInBlue Sun 01-Dec-24 17:36:41

Has anyone seen or read about Keir Starmer wanting the police to call on all the millions of people that signed the petition asking for another general election. I was watching catchup on You Tube this afternoon and a few of the social media stations were mentioning it.

What happened to free speech or is that no longer a thing in Great Britain.

LadyInBlue Sun 01-Dec-24 19:55:54

I don't think many of you posting on the site has read my post carefully.

I asked if anyone had seen or read about Keir Starmer wanting the police to call on all the millions of people that signed the petition asking for another general election. I was watching catchup on You Tube this afternoon and a few of the social media stations were mentioning it.

I did NOT say I believed it, I asked if anyone had seen or read about it.

Also people are being jailed for saying what they think and that is free speech being curtailed by the government.

I did not want a song and dance and nasty comments about my post, it was just a general enquiry, a simple YES or NO would have sufficed, but no, there is always someone willing to be nasty. What a terrible website this is, I have only been a member a few days and already thinking about leaving. I also have never, ever seen as many deleted posts on any social websites, they must have been bad for the moderators to delete them, how sad.

Post over.

That’s the point of disinformation NotSpaghetti if you spread around ‘fake noos’ then a proportion of people will believe it so you attain your objective.

Smileless2012 Sun 01-Dec-24 19:58:00

No I haven't heard about this LadyInBlue but I wish I'd signed it now grin.

Oh really! 🙄

I agree that there was no need for nasty comments directed your way LadyInBlue

Oh really! 🙄

Yes really, look at that poor man who hung himself in jail because he was locked up for saying things against the government. His funeral was yesterday.

Paedophiles have been let out of jail early so people who are speaking against the government can be locked up.

Thank you very much, if I had stated my post as fact then yes, I could understand the anger against me but I didn't, I asked a straightforward yes or no question.

No I haven't heard about this LadyInBlue but I wish I'd signed it now grin.

Nearly three million people signed the UK governments petition.

Understood 😃

What a load of garbage, dear oh dear, your last sentence intimates you did believe it.

It did. It didn’t read as a question at all!

You say it doesn't read as a question.

I asked if anyone had seen or read, if that isn't a question then I do not know what is. Perhaps you should study English a bit more and then you will understand what a question is. Perhaps I should have added a question mark after the QUESTION to clarify it for you.

Without the question mark l assumed it was rhetorical.

What happened to free speech or is that no longer a thing in Great Britain.

Adding "What happened to free speech or is that no longer a thing in Great Britain." Very definitely makes it sound as if you believe it to be true, whether you meant it or not.

Wyllow3 Sun 01-Dec-24 20:35:26

"What happened to free speech or is that no longer a thing in Great Britain."

*It appears to me that you do indeed believe this, because you later refer to arrests made during the riots - I quote - as

"speaking against the government*

No, those arrests were not anti government but were for serious offences following the terrible tragedy of 3 young girls being stabbed and rumours arising from it

organising violent riots

taking part in violent riots

posting hate memes on media social media like " bomb all the adults dead in the mosques".

I have come away with the impression that the arrests are your target, not the absurd social media post you repeated that 3 million will get knocking on doors for signing a petition.

Iam64 Sun 01-Dec-24 20:55:10

A word of support for Bahumbug and Wyllow3. LadyinBlue it’s no good complaining and insisting you were onky asking a question when you went on to suggest free speech is no longer in Gt Britain
Your OP is inflammatory nonsense

NotSpaghetti Sun 01-Dec-24 21:00:45

look at that poor man who hung himself in jail because he was locked up for saying things against the government.

Do you mean the sad case of the man (Peter Lynch) who encouraged riots and who shouted "racist and provocative remarks" towards the police and called asylum seekers in the hotel "child killers" and who was found guilty of (and pled guilty to) violent disorder?

If not, please tell me who you mean, LadyInBlue
Thanks.

This sentence of yours suggests that people were not allowed to add their name to the petition and therefore would be called upon by the police, hence you accepted that statement as
credible information.

Fake news
Stupid to believe it, irresponsible to spread it.

No spreading, just asking.

There is a disingenuous way of hinting at gossip or fake news which the tabloids exploit to great effect.
It consists of asking an outrageous question which plants the seed of doubt, the hint of “smoke” without which there is no fire.
Eg
Did Prince Philip have a secret love?
Has Harry been asked to help out the RF?
Have the Middletons been left out of the Sandringham Christmas? Etc
All silly enough but somebody somewhere will believe what the questions purport to be asking.

It really wouldn't surprise me in the least. Nor would it surprise me if Fuhrér Starmer insisted we all had to swear an oath of loyalty to him, Robber Reeves and Angela Rayner.

The Sacred Triumverate.

FGS!

what utter balderdash!

... Fuhrér Starmer ???

This is inflammatory nonsense at its worst.

Go post on Elon Musk's X, you'll be more at home there.

MissAdventure Sun 01-Dec-24 22:03:36

In the absence of anything sensible to be incensed about, people are now getting wound up about about made up twaddle.

grumppa Sun 01-Dec-24 22:08:41

Well said, RosiesMaw2. I remember back in 1960 a headline in one of the French tabloids asking whether Elizabeth and Philip still loved each other. Three pages later, the conclusion was that they did. Some things never change,

LadyInBlue Mon 02-Dec-24 07:52:40

Goodness gracious me, what an absolutely ridiculous reaction to my question.

I have never, ever, seen such spite and terrible attitude to a poster who just wanted to know if anyone had heard about something I had seen when watching a catch-up programme on You Tube.

I have also been accused of spreading mis-information, I didn't spread anything, I have been accused of being stupid for believing such gossip, I do not believe anything until it happens.

All I wanted to know if anyone else had seen the same programme as I had, nothing more, nothing less.

It is a wonder that Granset is not losing more people because so many of you are people I would never, ever want to meet in person.

After being a member of this site for only three days I am leaving because if people cannot have a rational conversation without all the bitterness and nastiness from other posters then this is not where I want to be.

Good luck to you all, because with some of these horrible posters, you will need it.

loopyloo Mon 02-Dec-24 08:03:14

Just by repeating it you spread it on!
On the whole gransnet is very helpful and supportive.

ronib Mon 02-Dec-24 08:31:51

The activists take over again. Sorry to read of your hurt LadyInBlue.

Iam64 Mon 02-Dec-24 09:02:33

‘Activists’ - do you mean the vast majority here who recognise nonsense and challenge it?

ronib Mon 02-Dec-24 09:09:22

Iam64 no it’s not about challenging nonsense though is it? It’s about protecting the Labour government….
My husband made a good point- what evidence is there that the police were involved in tracking down signatories to the petition? It sounds like more mischief making on YouTube and did GNet choose to discuss this? No it didn’t.
