Police knocking on your door

(145 Posts)

Has anyone seen or read about Keir Starmer wanting the police to call on all the millions of people that signed the petition asking for another general election. I was watching catchup on You Tube this afternoon and a few of the social media stations were mentioning it.

What happened to free speech or is that no longer a thing in Great Britain.

Sorry, this sounds rude and blunt, but I simply don’t believe this! He’s addressed it in person and there are 3 millions signatures and signing a petition simply doesn’t constitute breaking the law.

Who on earth would spread such nonsense?

Also, UTube and other social media sites are responsible for all kinds of dangerous and idiotic rubbish, they are not credible news outlets!

I will be rude and blunt: why do people believe this shite and then share it 🤦🏼‍♀️

Petra

I was asking if anyone else had heard it, I didn't say it was true. No need to be horrible about it. Wash out your mouth with soap and water.

But OP, you surely realise that this is precisely how malicious rumours spread? Has anyone heard...? It then spreads like Chinese Whispers.
Methinks it is you that should be reaching for the mouthwash

A word of support for Bahumbug and Wyllow3. LadyinBlue it’s no good complaining and insisting you were onky asking a question when you went on to suggest free speech is no longer in Gt Britain
Your OP is inflammatory nonsense

I too support this statement.

The very fact that we can all express our views on here, whether we agree or disagree, shows that free speech is alive and well in our country. grin

It's about posting the truth.
Nothing whatsoever about Labour or Conservative.

How much police time would be wasted knocking on the doors of three million people who had signed a (perfectly legal to do) petition? at a guess, five minutes per person, if they are just tirning up to give them a fright, and not spending longer interviewing them and giving them a warning (for doing something legal?) That is twelve an hour. Twelve into three million is a quarter of a million - 250,000.

Do you really think, with the police forces already stretched to find and catch real criminals, that any PM would send them to walk the streets of Britain seeking out individuals who had signed a (PERFECTLY LEGALLY) to bring home to them the error of their ways?

Could we have a link to the source of this, please, so that we can see it with our own eyes? I have a feeling that it started on X and is being repeated by suckers.

Seems self evident to me hmm

Not a very nice welcome to a new poster is it? I’ve see the post ,too but assumed it was just silly mischief making but that doesn’t mean it can’t be discussed. It happens in China, it likely happens in Russia so everyone should be aware that it isn’t beyond some governments to do this. I would leave, too, if that was my first and only experience of GN.

Iam64 no it’s not about challenging nonsense though is it? It’s about protecting the Labour government….
My husband made a good point- what evidence is there that the police were involved in tracking down signatories to the petition? It sounds like more mischief making on YouTube and did GNet choose to discuss this? No it didn’t.

It’s so about spreading “rumours” and I can assure you if this was in any way true and instigated by the LP I can assure you we “protectors” would be calling them out.

Sadly this isn’t the first thread that Ladyinblue has made “interesting” remarks on.

If she feels some of us are horrible, then clearly this isn’t a site for her.

I’ve found most of the people on here to be fair minded and highly supportive, you’ve only got to look at the compassion shown to GNs when they are experiencing terrible and tragic events in their own lives.

Btw announcing one’s departure is unecessary and on other sites we call this “flouncing”

It took me just 2 clicks to google the claim in the O/P to fact check and establish it as false last night.

www.snopes.com/fact-check/uk-prime-minister-arrest/

Whats more, this fact check was published on November the 29th.

The O/P therefore had every opportunity to check it out before starting the thread but chose not to.

Elegran Mon 02-Dec-24 09:29:28

I could invent a rumour myself, and post it on the internet (not on X, I don't use that) even on Gransnet. Someone would be bound to share it to their many friends and followers and send it round the internet like a forest fire.

The problem is, I can't even think of anything spectacular but believable, except stuff that would expose someone eminently trustworthy and investigated, proved false and traced back to the source would get me convicted of libel.

If you really believe the challenges are about protecting the government I suggest you get over yourself

Apart from the fact that this was not OP ‘s “first and only experience of GN”, surely it is the content of a thread or post we are discussing..
And then, does “ silly mischief making” warrant discussion or the oxygen of publicity?
Most think not.

nanna8 Mon 02-Dec-24 09:51:32

Well that’s me told.

I doubt she’s in “denial”

I totally agree with her, am I in denial too?

That is how nasty rumours spread - by too many people not having the sense to check whether it is true before passing it on. If it were someone in a village spreading gossip that the minister was cooking the church books, they would be expected to prove it and to be told some home truths if they couldn't. It makes no difference if they are new to the village - they would soon get a bad reputation if they did it a few times. The internet is chock full of people passing on uncorroborated stories. If more readers of them reacted by asking what the source was, and shouted loudly if they found is was a falshood, there might be more regard for the truth.

MissAdventure Mon 02-Dec-24 09:53:41

Denial of what?
Lies?

Weird.

Oh dear, sorry that made me smile! Yes, in some respects you are right, but given some of the comments made by the OP I cannot feel too sorry for her.

You’ll know most of us are pretty blunt on here and as dear GSM would say, “don’t suffer fools gladly”

It was a daft and silly post and it was challenged!

Not to mention tracking down these signatory signers, lots of petitions just have name, email address and post code!

It’s such a silly concept!

Also, it’s been proven some signatories were not even based in the UK

Wyllow3 Mon 02-Dec-24 10:05:05

As I just said above, and gave a ref, it was a rumour that the O/P could have easily checked 2 days before posting on GN and was proved false

If an O/P expects to be taken seriously, then it's important to get your ducks in a row.

*Especially if an O/P then goes onto claim
"What happened to free speech or is that no longer a thing in Great Britain*

Millions of posts appear on social media everyday and to use an unfounded and unsourced one to make a serious accusation is bound to get a reaction.
