I went to our local M&S to buy stuff for Christmas and brought home a Cottage Pie for tonight's meal.

DH couldn't work out why I bought one while we have one in the freezer.

My view is that we still have one in the freezer for any eventuality.

My DH hasn't the faintest idea what's in the freezer,! and that is not the result of his Alzheimer's diognosis, he has always been like that. Sadly now he forgets which is the fridge and which is the freezer! I keep smiling and soldier on !!

Whenever my DH goes out on his own, even just to buy the paper, he comes back with liquorice. I mean why? I know he likes it but we have bags of it now. He always says he buys it’in case’ .

Good morning from cold and frosty South Lanarkshire.

Kalu I do feel for you, pain medication makes me very fuzzy headed too. Hope you feel better soon. flowers

Your energy levels put me to shame gM

Can’t remember if I commented on your nails Bella but they are fabulous.

I’m off to meet another Lanarkshire Gransnetter this morning, looking forward to it.

If any Scottish grans are interested there’s a little snippet this evening on Craft Christmas at Beechgrove. It was filmed a few weeks ago, talking about our yarn group’s Christmas Angel project. Great fun to see how the programme is made, the team was with us for over four hours but will probably result in a four minute clip.

Wishing everyone the best day possible.

Shelflife sending you a (((hug))). I hope you are accessing the help that is out there.

And, I hope my post didn't upset you.

DH wouldn't know what's in the fridge apart from the cottage pie - it's his favourite.

Liquorice is a laxative I believe 😁
You never know when you might need it.

If DH goes to Tesco he comes back with a Charlie Bigham ready meal - "I saw this and it was on offer".
We've got about 8 or 10 in the freezer, including cottage pies.

They'll come in handy for the January hibernation 😀

Not many Chatlie Bighams are GF and those that are, are unfreezable. Wish the fishpie was gf - I expect it's lovely.

I checked and it is ok to freeze them, they don't put that on the packaging because it might affect the quality, not that they've been frozen previously.
The smoked haddock gratin is the best!

It's a shame they're not gf, I do understand the difficulties.

Aveline Thu 12-Dec-24 11:14:19

Ooh haddock gratin 😋

Our sons have asked me why I have my freezer stocked up with goodies when I will be at their house for Christmas, I told them that in the event I am ill or we are all snowed in and I can't get to their house at least I will be able to prepare myself a Christmas dinner with all the trimmings. It is called forward planning.

My husband just wouldn't eat it. He's a fussy bugger and doesn't like cottage pie. I quite fancy a M&S cottage pie.

Mine prefers the one I make (so do I) but sometimes there's just not enough time.
The Gastropub ones are good. Decant it into one of your own dishes 😀

It’s always shepherd’s pie to dh, even when virtually always made with beef mince* - it’s one of his absolute favourite - dh is a man of simple tastes!

*though nowadays I always include red lentils and quite a lot of finely chopped veg.

Do you have a community fridge Doodledog? They take fresh food, unlike food banks.

No, but we have freezers grin

I won't waste anything, but it is so much easier when people don't try to be helpful without asking what would actually help!

I saw someone had made pigs-in-blankets-in-the-hole the other day - we could think up new recipes to use them up 😁

That sounds like a great idea - only I can’t imagine ever having any left over! I made loads the other day, now in the freezer.

BigBertha1 Thu 12-Dec-24 11:35:52

You are correct Kittylester as ever. Mine couldn't work out why I bought 2 non-alcoholic drinks in the Ocado shop today that neither of us like. we have invited a few neighbours in on Saturday for Christmas drinks and some don't drink alcohol. QED!

I always add a tin of baked beans to the mince beef and onions.
I've stocked up on tinned green lentils and am planning to incorporate those in my recipes as well.

My GS asked me why I was putting milk on the shopping list when there was a 2-pint carton in the freezer.
Reason 1: it's in case I can't get to the shops.
Reason 2: it saves electricity (I need to have a carton for emergencies so the next one would have to be frozen.)
If you get that!

GreatGM60 Thu 12-Dec-24 13:07:19

My DH has no idea what is in out freezer and would never dream of criticizing . Tell him to mind his own business.

kittylester Thu 12-Dec-24 13:11:27

DH wasn't criticising just bewildered!!

And it is his business - we are in this together!!

Does it irritate you that your DH isn't interested?

Nannimo Thu 12-Dec-24 13:58:02

I started to do freezer meals - cook double and freeze one - in November cos I thought about power cuts etc - BUT the problem with that is how to do defrost and warm up a rock solid cottage pie with no power 🤣. Anyway it is useful to have meals in to ship out when you simply run out of steam - but I agree about putting the new pie in and using up the older one first - providing you have the extra cooking time . There always summat! 🤪

keepingquiet Thu 12-Dec-24 14:05:08

My friend's parents have two freezers full of food yet they insist they take her shopping every week because 'there's nothing in,' I know of another couple like this too.

I don't even have a working freezer and yet I don't starve.

I don't get it.

Mine has been to Costco, and very kindly brought back a huge pack - five (5!!) - trays of pigs in blankets, which I have already ordered from Donald Russell for the one meat eater other than me who will be here at Christmas. He also brought back industrial quantities of mince pies, when there are several dozen of them in the freezer/kitchen.

He means well so it's hard to get cross, but what am I going to do with a million pigs in blankets when I usually cook veggie food and there will be only two meat eaters in residence on Christmas day?

Perhaps mince pies could be included in whatever food gifts you give neighbors and friends? The pigs in blankets - do you have friends with teen boys? Our only grandson loves pigs in blankets.
