Irrational dislikes of people you don’t know..

Perhaps I shouldn’t introduce this topic, as it could get nasty. I was thinking how I have irrational dislikes of people I see on television whom I don’t know at all. Helen Skelton, Sarah Moore (from Money for Nothing), Meghan used-to-be Markle, Luke Littler. I know nothing about any of these people, but I can’t stand them.

Of course the upside of this is that I have irrational likes as well.

This must be one of the worst threads ever on Gransnet!

Absolutely.
My friend was taught by James Martin. One of the loveliest men.
My nephew grew up with Jamie Oliver, another good guy.
I just don’t know how so many people can use the word hate
And not just once but over and over.

I think irrational dislikes often stem from subconscious biases or projecting our insecurities. It might happen when someone reminds us of someone who hurt us in the past or exhibits traits we suppress or dislike in ourselves. Recognizing this helps me shift toward curiosity instead of judgment. What about you—have you experienced this?

Casdon Sun 05-Jan-25 20:03:43

The thread is about irrational dislike, not hate? As always some will have an exaggerated dislike, but there have been much nastier, personally targeted threads on Gransnet, where people trash reputations and indulge in malicious gossip. In comparison this seems quite harmless to me.

There's one or two DH has worked with mentioned on here who literally "light up the room" and are very supportive of others in rehearsals (Judi Dench for one), but occasionally they rub some people up the wrong way. I guess it just happens, though to use the word "hate" is very strange.

Babs03 Sun 05-Jan-25 20:07:40

I was going with ‘dislike’ not hate.
And how irrational it can be.

I just don't like the look of Mary Berry.

I don't think wee Mary has got to the top of her game by knocking up a bit of sponge cake.

MissAdventure Sun 05-Jan-25 20:42:38

I've seen far worse than this thread.

There are quite a few people who post here once, and can't pluck up the courage to do it again for months, due to people taking a dislike to them.

That's far worse, in my book.

I'm pretty sure slebs don't think for one minute that everyone likes them.

Look at the reviews some get!!

I agree.

The very fact that the OP used the phrase "irrational dislike" surely means she's aware that 'taking against' someone you don't know isn't rational so is not meant, surely, to be a catalogue of people we hate?

Do any of us actually wish any harm on any of those individuals we've highlighted? I'd guess not.

Perhaps it's more that those people we've mentioned irritate us (for one reason or another) rather than actual "dislike" ?

Vanessa Feltz
Davina McCall
Ant and Dec
Helen Mirren
Sara Pascoe
Joanna Lumley

These just spring to mind after I said I liked everyone. I’m sure there are more.

I need a G&T!

This. I don’t feel I hate anyone with no reason. In fact I’m not sure I hate anyone at all these days - but yes there are certain people whom I certainly have never met that I have a certain irrational dislike for in particular on television. If I ran into them on the street I’m sure I’d manage to be polite though. 😂

These posts have made me laugh. My Mam took an instant dislike to Jamie Oliver when he first appeared, her only justification being "I don't like his face". Now I find myself saying the same about a number of celebrities.....all men for some weird reason.

Fwiw I entirely concur with her and have no idea why 😝

Calendargirl Mon 06-Jan-25 06:59:48

Olivia Colman is another ‘luvvie’ who irritates me nowadays.

Probably because of her Oscar acceptance speech years ago.

BlueBelle Mon 06-Jan-25 07:06:39

I can’t think of his name ( seems to happen a lot these days) but the bloke who used to be in Eastenders and now does that bridge game and lots of SAS things I don’t like him at all and don’t like the way he speaks …. I m sure he wouldn’t like me either

I don’t see anything wrong with this thread it’s light hearted
I m sure these celebs have had a lot worse

Don’t like Sharon Osborne and all her cosmetic work so up herself

KateW19 Mon 06-Jan-25 07:47:54

It’s always worth considering that some dislikes of certain people are aggravated by the media using viewers or readers as political tools. We used to wonder why our now deceased mum hated Megan Markle so much, until we discovered her I pad news feed had taken her onto the Daily Mail app. A lot of manipulation of public opinion goes on out there in the internet

love0c Mon 06-Jan-25 08:21:32

KatieW19 Clearly you are as easily manipulated as your mum.

I took an instant dislike to someone once, couldn’t stand them.

They turned out to be fabulous, kind generous soul and had been my best friend for over 30 years.

Have agree with those who mention the sanctimonious Mr Titchmarsh!
What a snivelling litte creep of a man.

I think you should look to your own personality before you criticize someone like Titmarsh, he has made his fortune by being nice to everyone. I understand why some dislike Clarkson, Ramsey, or Trump but your dislike is beyond comprehension.

MaizieD Mon 06-Jan-25 09:28:43

I think this is a horrible thread, too. That people are happy to defend their irrationality makes me wonder how they make judgements on issues that might be quite serious.

Indeed.

I have nothing against Luke Littler, he's an excellent darts player considering his age and seems nice enough but I can't look at this 17 year old who looks 34, he makes my flesh crawl but I don't know why!

There's something .... off'' about Dawn French, even though she's incredibly brilliant and talented and I think, quite beautiful.

Lorraine Kelly, Chris Packham and Cliff Richard all seem very .... primeval, they make my hair stand on end!

It's nothing personal against any of them but I can't get near them!

nanna8 Mon 06-Jan-25 09:48:19

Tom Cruise. Obnoxious little man who loves himself.

merlotgran Mon 06-Jan-25 09:54:51

I don’t see anything wrong with this thread it’s light hearted

You think calling Alan Titchmarsh a snivelling little creep of a man is light hearted?

Curlywhirly Mon 06-Jan-25 10:07:54

I have a dislike of Graham Norton, but it's not irrational, I know exactly why I dislike him! Though he may be a perfectly lovely person, he looks so like a dreadful sex pest I had the misfortune of being targeted by at work (in the 70s - wouldn't happen now!). It gives me the creeps ever time I see him. Sorry Graham.
Amanda Holden and Victoria Beckham I find hard to like, but the one person I dislike the most is Trump (that's not irrational either, we've all seen enough footage of his despicable personality to see that he's just disgusting).

Kate1949 Mon 06-Jan-25 10:12:41

I don't hate the people I mentioned. They put themselves out there and we are entitled to our opinions.

Although excused as “light hearted” I think this thread may be fairly indicative of how some make judgments on superficial, or ill thought out prejudicial grounds. Why do conspiracy theories without foundation spread so rapidly?

I think many of us may be prone to do this before we put our thoughtful analytical brain into gear.
