How are you making out with the snowstorm?

I logged on today expecting a thread about the snowstorm, but didn't see one.

How are you all making out? Stuck at home for a few days, or do you have to go out?

It's a balmy 5 degrees celcius here on BC's north coast. We had a tiny bit of snow a few days ago, but it's all melted now.

Lots of deep snow here. The sky is brighter. I managed to change a hospital appt from today as I would not have been able to get there. It has been re arranged for Wednesday so I hope I can get up my drive then. We are taking a change of clothes with us as O H has an appt on Friday, so we may have to stay in a hotel. Packing the car for an expedition. Salt/ sand. Blanket. Flask , snacks

Whereabouts are you?

Up on the moors in Lancashire

We never get snow in the vale of York but we got a thick covering yesterday. It was beautiful, especially as we didn’t have to go anywhere. Coats on and out for an early morning walk. Today it has already just about melted away. Why do we make so much fuss? Our son lives in Montreal and it is regularly in the minus twenties and tons of snow, but I expect they are just better organised!

Loads of snow up here in the Pennines.
Well over 15 inches and no sign of any thaw anytime soon!

No snow down here on the south coast.. but promised for next week.. today we have bright blue clear skies and sunshine..

I’d guess the operative word is regularly. If something happens regularly it’s worth investing in the equipment, storage and infrastructure to cope with it efficiently. Once every year or so for a couple of days, and it’s not.

We had very very heavy rain all night, several nearby villages cut off through flooding this morning, but when I woke up it was white all over and snowing a blizzard! Within half an hour the rain was back and washed it all away and now it’s just dry, cold and grey! East Midlands.

We've got more than 6 inches but the roads have been cleared. The school are closed today because it has been snowing on and off and the country pupils would have had problems this morning. At least walking in the snow gives you good value in exercise!

Thick snow yesterday, my ds went out and cleared all the driveway for me and my neighbour. He then dug out both cars. Woke up to another several inches having fallen so he's out there now clearing it again. My hospital appointment had to be rearranged from this morning as the village was cut off no public transport and no roads cleared. I'm going to be working from home tomorrow as per work request.
I absolutely hate the disruption caused by snow but love the light and silence it brings when I have nowhere to be

A lot of snow here in the hills of North Wales. The roads have been cleared but my car is at the bottom of a long driveway which is uphill driving out so I'm stuck for now.
I was speaking to a man from Poland and he said they have to change to winter tyres there. Think he said it was a legal requirement.

No snow here, North Yorkshire coast , just rain

leeds22 Mon 06-Jan-25 14:40:22

Lots of snow here in the Dales. About 6 inches by Sunday morning and it's not showing much sign of going. The snow ploughs/gritters have been out, so the roads are clear. Not a lot of movement outside, everyone must be working from home, except the farmers of course smile.

Here in Bradford over 100 schools are shut, side roads are lethal, lots of snow evident, some is melting but might freeze tonight. Stuck at home fir two days as too treacherous to go outside apart from milk from the petrol station. Cannot risk a fall.

Also in Latvia.

Yes in Canada we also have a winter tire requirement from October to end of April, and towns are well equipped with sanding and salting trucks as well as ploughs. You are responsible for the sidewalk in front of your house as well.

Since we live on the coast, we get a lot of damp, with freezing at night but thawing during the day. The damp sidewalks can be very slippery, as they were this morning. In land, it can be very cold indeed!

They did show on the news here that there was quite a bit of snow in the UK and many flights were delayed or cancelled.

What snow?

It can be better with sustained lower temperatures, actually.
When temperatures hover around freezing point and it is alternately freezing, thawing, mixed snow and rain overnight then freezing again, it can become very treacherous and slippery, with black ice causing accidents for vehicles and falls for pedestrians. Plus, as someone else has said, when snow is guaranteed for most of the winter, local authorities prioritise the buying, manning, housing and maintaining a lot of up-to-date snow-clearing equipment.

Still waiting with my old fashioned wooden sledge at the ready. No snow yet. 😪

Woke up to a snowy morning in Cheshire. Have had to cancel my birthday lunch with DH in nearby village and tell family not to try and come round. There are only two roads into our estate and both are steep. Folk have posted pix on facebook of stranded cars in the area. Rebooking my entire birthday to next Tuesday.

Very cold and frosty here in SW Wales. Must have been very cold last night as our large pond is frozen over. I have not seen that in the seven years we have been here .

M0nica Thu 09-Jan-25 08:21:47

It snowed 15 miles south of us, the other side of the M4 to us but we have only had a mere smear, little more than heavy frost.

HelterSkelter1 Thu 09-Jan-25 12:20:09

Are the schools working on line when closed for bad weather? That could be a useful inheritance from lockdown days.

I too have an old fashioned wooden sledge in the shed from my DCs childhood. I used to pull them home from school when snowy. Lovely memories. It had metal runners so once I got going it slid easily.

A lot of snow in Brighton yesterday, my daughter sent pics of a delighted GS. She was not so pleased, they got stranded at Sussex university where both parents work because the roads were gridlocked.

HelterSkelter1 Thu 09-Jan-25 13:04:19

Lovely Brighton in the snow. Heavy snow in 1967/68. I remember one afternoon when the setting sun turned the snow on the domes of the Pavilion a deep red. Beautiful.

Aveline Thu 09-Jan-25 13:24:04

No snow but sooooo cold here today. Having to scrape the ice off the car this morning remains my least favourite activity ever!
Now back home but wearing thermal vest and leggings under fleece and trousers.

Elegran Thu 09-Jan-25 13:29:26

Aveline I saw that St Monans was -13C at 5 am this morning.
