What do you think of Labour so far?
Yes 14 years of ‘chaos and division’ with the Tories and so 6 months isn’t long by comparison.

But how do you feel they’re doing?
Anyone with voter’s remorse or is it still too early to tell?
Are you optimistic about 4 more years with them or are you disappointed?

Anniebach Mon 13-Jan-25 22:12:44

Far to early to give an answer, I have no regrets for voting for
them

M0nica Mon 13-Jan-25 22:16:59

The problem is we had no choice at the last election. The Conservatives had become so incapable of governing that they really were the very worse option, but like it or leave it, Labour was the only other party in contention.

I have never voted for either of the big parties. What keeps me going is the knowledge is that no matter how incompetent this shower are, and my oodness they are! The Conswrvatives would have been even worse.

Doodledog Mon 13-Jan-25 22:25:58

I am with Anniebach.

There hasn't been enough time to know how it's going to go, and as M0nica asks - what was the alternative? I have no regrets about voting for them, and am acutely aware of how much the media (online and off) are conspiring to make things difficult for them, which means I take a lot of reports with a pinch of salt.

Anyway, it doesn't matter how many people feel remorse for voting for them. They are in government for the nest four years or so, so the sensible thing, IMO, is to make the best of it and support them to do well, as otherwise we are all worse off.

I was hoping this would be a nostalgic thread about comics. How disappointing,

So now Starmer takes on an advisor to the previous Tory government (Olaf Henricson-Bell advised Hammond, Javier and Sunak) that he blames for the current poor economic state of the country’s finances … am I missing something here?

What is Starmer up to? Losing confidence in Reeves I think.

keepingquiet Mon 13-Jan-25 22:37:14

It is still very early days.

I was really looking forward to a Labour government and I remain optimistic they can turn things around but I think we have to be realistic too.

One thing is we have some good people in government and I hope that they can carry on making changes in the background whilst the media focus on the stuff that will sell papers.

Beeches Mon 13-Jan-25 22:39:41

Fried GT, they have so much to repair, and not just the Tory mess, but global economy down turns, too much wealth in hands of the few, covid, Ukraine, wars everywhere- sadly they came into power at a time when populists are on the march calling to the foot soldiers to abandon democracy and create mayhem. It’s the same old playbook, just a different century.

Beeches Mon 13-Jan-25 22:40:37

Annie, me neither, imperfect but at least intelligent and sane!

Beeches Mon 13-Jan-25 22:43:07

Fried GT, he’s said he backs her for the whole leadership so it’s great he’ll give her the time needed to get things working. It’s almost impossible to make any western economy work properly now due to late stage capitalism just not working how it used to.

That would be far less tedious, I agree. I always liked Minnie the Minx.

Sago Mon 13-Jan-25 22:49:02

I did not vote Labour or Tory.

I am disgusted at the past 14 years of Tory rule.

I made a decision to try and be positive and give the new government time.

I managed no more than 6 weeks.

Starmer is making Boris look competent.

Really? That sounds strange.

Or perhaps they'll ask Mr Henricson-Bell's opinion on future economic strategy then do the opposite?

Allira Mon 13-Jan-25 23:50:21

Olaf Henricson-Bell

Thst name rang a bell (sorry!)
His brother is a Labour MP and was a Director of the Resolution Foundation.

As a civil servant, Olaf should be impartial and serve whichever government is in power.

Olaf is an EU director, hopefully mending ties to Europe at a time when we’re woefully exposed militarily

He was.

He is now the head of the No 10 policy unit.

i dont know if any of you remember the missed opportunity years ago, when the "gang of 4" shirley williams, and I think david steel and infuriatingly I can picture the man in my mind but his name escapes me.,(Roy ?) Anyway I have always felt that the british people in reality do not want either far right or far left but that is all they get offered , to swing one way and then the other, So when sensible moderate people think to offer a more middle of the road attitude and do less party politicing and more action it would have been far better.
This male attitude of scoring points and point the finger of blame is ridiculous as the time and energy is spent on that rather than improving the situation. as I liken it to, Two drivers standing by their crashed vehicles arguing the toss over how much blame is caused by one or other driver whilst their passengers lie in the road bleeding to death!!!

An example from where I live. The railway surrounds the town and there are constant hold ups of traffic and gridlocks as the level crossings mean that all traffic is at a standstill. The answer should have been to have built a bridge over the railways to enable traffic to keep moving, but this would be expensive. So instead of grasping the nettle and seeing that whenever it was done, it would cost time and money but it would only get worse and more expensive, No .Both political parties ducked out and avoided the issue until the other side was in power and then they suggested that the job be done. This has gone on for years, now costs are even higher, the town is losing business as companies see the problems the railway will bring them and go elsewhere. So procrastination has simply let this problem continue with no change in the frustration and annoyance to the public. Well the same applies to the government, more attention to what the public see as important , less point scoring and looking at speeches, not for their content but to nit pick over the choice of words.
But then the dog in manger attitude is typical in particular with men. Thinking that the main aim is to see who can say "I.m the King of the Castle" instead of lets all mend the castle together before we do anything else!!

Keir has full confidence in his chancellor.

hmm

We often seem to hear that from our leaders, then before you know it….they’re out.

lixy Tue 14-Jan-25 07:23:14

This thread is on Chat - should be in News and Politics.

So is this yet another example of Tory misinformation and ‘stirring’? Certainly several people have been disappointed by the misleading title.

I’m with madeleine45 in that we need grown up politics without all the point scoring, not the knock-about comedy of weekly comics.
