Meghan Mark II?

“Staying true to my values”.

So says Michelle Obama as she announces she won’t be attending Donald Trump’s inauguration next Monday.

Personally I think there are expectations around her position as former FLOTUS. She ought to attend in my opinion. The voters have made their choice - sorry Michelle. It’s not ‘all about you’. See the bigger picture here. It’s a State occasion, you should be there. “Your truth”? Pah!

Excellent post Syracute🙏

It’s good to hear the perspective of someone who is actually living this. You will understand the situation in your country far better than anyone else.

You can see, from most of the posts here, that many of us (not all) agree with your point of view that Michelle Obama is right not to attend … and that silly tabloid gossip adds nothing to the conversationflowers

My point is that White women don’t automatically get criticised for demonstrating these values and behaviours. Black women do.

Your point, in my opinion, was to pretty much call a poster a racist. If you'd said what you meant here first time round, it might have been less offensive rather than accusing FriedGreenTomatoes of something odious.

Syracute offers her perspective. That is good in this discussion.
Syracute mentions Nancy Pelosi alongside Michelle. Is Nancy black? No, she looks very white to me. We could start criticising her for not attending, but we don't because she isn't as high profile or as influential as Michelle. Nothing to do with colour.
I can also think of several white women who irrirate people because of their feminist views, and who often get criticised for demonstrating these strong values.
Emma Watson
Taylor Swift
Hillary Clinton
And more.

Any white previous First Lady ( and they all relish that role, white or black ) could be criticised for not turning up to another Presidential inauguration with their ex President husband, if he had decided he would go.It’s called being supportive, and since they’ve hugely enjoyed all the perks of being the wife of the President it seems to me it’s the least they can do.
That’s my opinion on it and other views are available 😁
The colour of skin has no bearing on it.

Just coincidence choosing a black tv celebrity with a former
black First Lady

Are you serious? It’s a ridiculous thing to say.
This whole debate is about whether a former First Lady should attend alongside her husband at the inauguration of a new President.Yes, we all know that, groan, it’s DT again but you have to respect the role of President and not the man on these occasions. Not that I care tuppence either way but it was a point raised so am answering it.Nada to do with skin colour so let’s not go down that route.

Not coincidence, but comparing two entitled women in top jobs who once out of power throw a wobbly where responsibilities are concerned is how I see it.

Parsley3 Fri 17-Jan-25 09:07:52

Choosing not to attend the inauguration is throwing a wobbly?

Anniebach Fri 17-Jan-25 09:08:04

And was compared with a black woman who is in the news, definitely not coincidence.

Parsley3 Fri 17-Jan-25 09:14:40

Why not compare her to Melania Trump who refused to attend Joe Biden's inauguration? As a former First Lady, That would have been an appropriate comparison.

Maybe the OP didn’t know that and maybe the small fact that DT didn’t go had something to do with Melania’s decision 😉

Oreo Fri 17-Jan-25 09:19:09

So not an appropriate comparison at all.

Lathyrus3 Fri 17-Jan-25 09:20:50

Just out of interest, are all other former presidents’ wives attending the Inauguration?

Smileless2012 Fri 17-Jan-25 09:21:11

I don't agree with the OP. I agree with your posts escaped.

The spurious link of MM to MO is clearly stated in the OP; It's not 'all about you' and "Your truth" are often associated with MM which is why I disagree that MO is Meghan Mark II.

There is nothing to even suggest the OP has anything to do with race/colour.

Anniebach Fri 17-Jan-25 09:22:31

But a black woman who was never First Lady is an acceptable choice? What is the connection between these two woman ?

I agree Anniebach. There's only one connection. They're both black.

Farzanah Fri 17-Jan-25 09:32:55

Very good post Syracute.
I also agree about the racism argymargy.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 17-Jan-25 09:33:14

I am not an never will be FLOTUS (yes I know that’s a surprise dear Gransnetters 🙀😹)

I am married and over the last forty plus years I have attended meetings, events etc., alongside DH despite not being a fan of the reasons behind them.

When I turned sixty, I decided that I would never go to anything I didn’t want to again, DH was totally onboard with this, and if and when required goes along solo. It also works in reverse I never expect him to automatically accompany me.

Perhaps Michelle has just had this epiphany moment?

Well I can see no other reason to choose MM as a comparison in the title?
What else is at all comparable?

Well done Michelle for sticking up for your principles, as others have said.

Parsley3 Fri 17-Jan-25 10:34:02

I agree that the OP's comparison is not appropriate. Comparing Mrs Trump to Mrs Obama would be though. Melania stuck to her principles by not coming to Washington to live with her husband when he first became president. It was reported at the time that she was prioritising her son's education over FLOTUS conventions.

MissAdventure Fri 17-Jan-25 10:34:38

I can only see one glaringly obvious similarity between the two.
Except Meghan has been criticised for going everywhere with Harry, and touching his back.

Wyllow3 Fri 17-Jan-25 10:42:13

Why use her in the thread title at all?

Smileless2012 Fri 17-Jan-25 10:42:32

I don't think there is a connection between the two Annie but the 'connection' FGT made in her OP is that in her opinion, MO was making it 'all about her', her 'truth' which is what MM does.

I didn't and don't see the comparison/connection having anything to do with colour.

Anniebach Fri 17-Jan-25 10:43:24

Best stick to facts,
