Meghan Mark II?

“Staying true to my values”.

So says Michelle Obama as she announces she won’t be attending Donald Trump’s inauguration next Monday.

Personally I think there are expectations around her position as former FLOTUS. She ought to attend in my opinion. The voters have made their choice - sorry Michelle. It’s not ‘all about you’. See the bigger picture here. It’s a State occasion, you should be there. “Your truth”? Pah!

That's the definition of the r word isn't it, at least partly?
Bringing someone's race or skin colour into something that has nothing whatsoever to do with the conversation.

Wyllow3

Why use her in the thread title at all?

perhaps the poster could explain?

MissAdventure Fri 17-Jan-25 10:49:11

Perhaps it racist to assume the comparison is racist??

Then do give comparisons

Smileless2012 Fri 17-Jan-25 10:56:07

Perhaps it racist to assume the comparison is racist? yes Annie, perhaps it is.

Anniebach Fri 17-Jan-25 11:02:25

What other connection ? is Michelle doing Netflix , cooking,
gardening etc ?

Smileless2012 Fri 17-Jan-25 11:05:46

Why does there have to be another connection Annie if the connection is for FGT that MM and MO make everything about them?

Smileless2012 Fri 17-Jan-25 11:07:05

Apologies for any confusion, my post @ 10.56 quoted and was in response to MissA.

MissAdventure Fri 17-Jan-25 11:07:47

I'm not saying it is racist or racially motivated, one way or the other, because I'm treading carefully, and don't wish to offend, but again, to me, there is only one similarity between the two women.

Parsley3 Fri 17-Jan-25 11:11:09

Melania was true to her values by staying in NY when the First Lady was expected to move into the White House. That raised a few eyebrows at the time.

Anniebach Fri 17-Jan-25 11:11:56

And for me, one similarly between the two women certainly not political

Sparklefizz Fri 17-Jan-25 11:12:36

I think when anyone talks about "their truth", we automatically think of Meghan ..... or at least, I certainly do ... and tend to think that the person's "truth" is not true at all (as proven to be the case with many of Meghan's comments.)

No need to fret this time though, Melania is moving to Washington.

Smileless2012 Fri 17-Jan-25 11:18:09

Like you Sparklefizz I automatically think of Meghan too.

Parsley3 Fri 17-Jan-25 11:19:42

Where does Michelle Obama talk about 'her truth'?

Anniebach Fri 17-Jan-25 11:20:24

Got it, they both write on bananas ?

Lathyrus3 Fri 17-Jan-25 11:28:29

Michelle Obama or her Office have not made any comment at all on why she is not attending.

The quote “Staying true to my values” comes from an interview some years ago.

Nothing she has said or done has “made it about her” other than choosing not to go.

So why did the OP chose to use a quote that does not apply in this instance other than in the OPs mind? Why liken a woman who has made no comment to one who has actively sought to tell all.

I can see no other purpose than to tap into people’s dislike of Meghan Markles attitude and conflate it with Michelle Obama’s decision in order to pass on that dislike. However irrelevant.

Why the OP has chosen to do that only she knows.

escaped Fri 17-Jan-25 11:30:59

I've seen references to her truth quite often in her speeches and in her book quotes.

I think the clue to the comparison is in the italicised word expectations in the OP. Well, that's how I saw it anyway. In a FLOTUS/Royal role there are, rightly or wrongly, assumptions that a spouse will behave in a particular manner. Michelle = Meghan in this respect. Neither has to, neither chooses to, good for both of them. Colour is irrelevant.

I never usually get involved in arguments about racism on GN, (ever since I was accused of being racist by saying ScoobyDo instead of Omid Scobie!! Stupid made up comment!!). What I was irritated by here today was the insulting tone of shame on you as an insulting remark when we really don't know.

So by conflating Michelle with Meghan....

Anniebach Fri 17-Jan-25 11:35:08

Michelle is not First Lady

So she didn't say "true to my values" about this event, and hasn't even commented except to say she isn't going?

Parsley3 Fri 17-Jan-25 11:58:18

Fake news.

J52 Fri 17-Jan-25 12:01:21

Maybe FGT2 could come back and explain some of the issues and language used in the original post. That should clarify the questions raised.

Smileless2012 Fri 17-Jan-25 12:25:37

It would be helpful if you came back and explained FGT.

Well I will say it, as no-one else seems to have done yet. The “Meghan Mark II” comment means “another uppity Black woman that we disapprove of”. I can’t be bothered to rehash all the incidents of racism against Meghan in the media but will just say shame on you!, FGT2.

Absolute b*ll%&ks!

Where in the world do you see racism screaming from the O/P?
If you knew the Meghan connection well, you would see that it is all about female empowerment, being your own person, doing what you want to do beyond the realms of royal etiquette and restrictions. The parallel is obvious. Being true to yourself, presenting yourself in a way that shows your true inclinations. I could go on, but check out Meghan's admirable quotes on the subject
Shame on you for dragging racism into this, and shame on those jumping on the bandwagon to agree!

Sorry, but the title of this thread surely does imply racist thought.
I, personally, find it so offensive! Glad others see it that way and are happy to say so here.
