I was told yesterday that the thumbs up emoji and sign, is now classed as aggressive. I asked my DGD, she confirmed. This symbol has been used as ; OK, Great, I’m Fine for years by the armed services, divers and every day people. Woke has gone mad. Please stop the world, I want to get off.

Think I'm going to start say "spiffing".
"Yes, thank you, that's spiffing!"
"Would you mind setting the table for me Darling? That would be quite spiffing!"
grin

Who are you addressing with this comment? Did you send it from your phone? Were you talking to someone at the time, and was the post sent from beyond the grave? grin

They walk into it every time, don’t they πŸ€¦πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ

Would someone calling "woke!!!"

like to explain how on earth this particular debate on πŸ‘ has anything whatsoever to do with "woke?"

That's what I was thinking. Isn't this to do with the changing perception of symbols, in the same way as words (which are only symbols after all) change in meaning. "Gay" comes to mind, but there are others.

Do people still use the term woke? It's American isn't it?

It did originate in America. It was first used in a song by a black American blues singer in 1938.
In the song it is used as stay awake to racial intentions.
If I remember correctly.

Doodledog Fri 17-Jan-25 15:56:50

I don't think anyone anywhere has said it is forbidden to use the thumbs up emoji. Why do independent older women need to be 'allowed' to do anything, and who is 'controlling' us?

I think the truth is that this is another way in which younger people differentiate themselves from older ones. They roll their eyes at expressions that they find dated, just as we did, and just as their children will do in their turn.

People can choose whether to be offended or not, just as they can choose whether to use the symbol or not. It is often useful to know whether things we do might be perceived in ways other than we intend them, though, so that our choices are informed ones.

For goodness sake ignore all this tripe,
too much nonsense going on in the
world. There are more important things happening like living.

Ooo!

Rowlocks!
I'll continue to use it.
Thumbs up has always been positive.

dalrymple23 Fri 17-Jan-25 15:32:26

I obviously lead an isolated life! I "woke" up yesterday morning my only use of that particular word and I will never get in trouble with emojis as I haven't the foggiest how to attach them and not terribly interested!!

whywhywhy Fri 17-Jan-25 15:15:04

I use it and they can shove that idea right up their kilts!!! Annoyed!!!

While I agree that this is all very silly - I certainly still use a 'thumbs up' and have never heard that it is considered aggressive, please don't use the word "woke" in this context - that IS aggressive. Woke has a particular meaning ... it means being aware or socially/culturally well informed. I for one am very proud to be Woke!

Exactly this!

Paperbackwriter Fri 17-Jan-25 15:08:02

"Woke" simply means being sensitive to the feelings and needs of others. It isn't a bad thing!

LauraNorderr do you remember Roger the Cabin Boy in Captain Pugwash? -I was so innocent at the time it washed over me liked the waves πŸ˜€
This is one on those β€œurban myths” so it didn't wash over you…..the cabin boy was called Tom. There was also never a character called Seaman Stains wink πŸ‘πŸ»^

There was a pirate called Willy though…..

rocketship Fri 17-Jan-25 14:38:34

It is not 'woke' when the meaning of words/emogies/etc. change.

The definition of woke: Aware of and actively attentive to important societal facts and issues (especially issues of racial and social justice).

This USA slang word has been used by many incorrectly to refer to anything and everything they disagree with.

Most of the time I just ignore the current trends.

Mollygo Fri 17-Jan-25 14:12:44

This debate has to do with wokeness just as much as the claim that πŸ‘ is now perceived/claimed by some to have a different meaning.
It’s another example of people using a word or symbol in a different way and expecting others to accept that they are right.

Evolution of language, or . . .

Baggs I think you’re right about the control.

Baggs Fri 17-Jan-25 14:10:19

but πŸ‘?

They've said it's aggressive. No 'nice' people are aggressive. Therefore, you can't use it.

Bollox. Just ignore them.

"Wokeness" is not about "being nice" even though this is most people's understanding of it. It is about language control* and emotional control. Hope that helps.

*You can't say that!

Yes, I get it that for example changing gendered words like chairman or fireman is contested, and words that are accused of being racist are contested as "woke" as words do have power and emotion,

but πŸ‘?

GrauntyHelen Fri 17-Jan-25 13:53:14

This is nothing to do with "wokery"
