Do you have one? If so, what is it that you like about it?

I have a sample box of perfume from Saltworks. It's clever marketing, but the idea is that you buy sample boxes at varying prices. Each box comes with little vials of scent - ten per box, plus a voucher with a value that depends on how much you paid for the samples - the more you pay, the higher the discount. You try them out and decide which you prefer, and then trade in your voucher for ether a full bottle of your favourite, or a few travel sizes. They make good gifts if you don't know what the recipient would like, and there is a booklet with notes about each of the scents - a bit like wine tasting cards grin.

I'm working through the scents now to see which one to order, and it's got me thinking of favourites over the years. I loved Chanel 19 for a long time, and Jo Malone's Pomegranate Noir, but tried a few different ones that I got as presents or in duty free shops.

I liked the freshness of the 19 when I was younger, and the deeper, woodier notes of the PN later on. I've always liked patchouli/musky/vanilla scents, and am veering towards those with those notes in my sample box.

What about you? Do you stick to a particular scent, or chop and change as you find new ones?

Elizabeth Arden: Blue Grass in winter, it has such a warm sweet smell
Dior: Diorissimo in summer. It is the closest sent I know to the smell of lily-in-the-valley.

For many years now my favourite every day fragrance is Clarins Eau Dynamisante. Another favourite is Thierry Mugler Angel but its a bit heavy for every day use.

Indigo8 Sat 25-Jan-25 16:47:54

I used to wear Diorissimo. I still love the smell of it.

I don't wear perfume now but now my GSs say I smell of old ladies. Which is slightly better than smelling of old men I suppose.

JamesandJon33 Sat 25-Jan-25 16:48:36

BlueBelle Sat 25-Jan-25 16:52:25

I like whatever anyone gives me or I get in the charity shop

tanith Sat 25-Jan-25 16:59:35

I don't wear perfume often but still use old favourites Guerlains Shalimar and Samsara, and Flower by Kenzo.

I always used to wear Paco Rabanne XS which unfortunately is now discontinued. My daughter found me a bottle a while ago but asked me to keep a little in the bottom so she could have the occasional sniff, once I’ve passed away, to remind her of me.
Now I’ve moved onto CK Elegance.

. . . slightly better than smelling of old men I suppose.

😂

Aqua Manda! I loved that as a teen. These posts are bringing back memories. I think that the sense of smell is very important when it comes to taking us back to different times. Not a perfume as such, but the smell of Ambre Solaire always reminds me of the long school holidays.

My first job after leaving school in the late 70s was at Dickins&Jones in Regent St.
I was a junior clerk for the Perfumery Buyer, who was a lovely man.
The job was my introduction to a brand new world of expensive fragrances and makeup- up till then I was a Rimmel girlsmile I still like Guerlain fragrances, particularly Mitsouko but my budget won’t stretch anymore!

Rendella Sat 25-Jan-25 17:19:55

I have always loved to use Eden by Cacherell

Grandmadinosaur Sat 25-Jan-25 17:26:12

My favourites are :

Marc Jacobs Daisy
Estée Lauder Beautiful
Jo Malone Pomegranate Noir
Jo Malone Orange Bitters.

I used to use Chanel No 5 but it doesn’t smell the same on me any more.

In the past I’ve used L’air du temps, Opiym,Rive Gauche,Fidji and Shalimar.

Aqua Manda what a blast from the past! My first perfume was Pretty peach from Avon that my grandma used to get for me.

Labradora Sat 25-Jan-25 17:26:32

I feel undressed without perfume.
Nina Ricci L'Air du Temps (always) ; Fleur de fleurs (before it was discontinued).
In my 30s and 40s Estee Lauder's Private Collection: Oscar de la Renta ;Teatra alla Scala : Bal à Versailles.
Moving towards Guerlain's Jicky and L'Heire Bleu.
Don't like fruity ones !!!! I want to smell nice, not eat it !

rafichagran Sat 25-Jan-25 17:27:43

I wear perfumes everyday, I love Chanel, fleur de Oranguer, sold in Marks, and all fragrances from the Clarins range.
Even when I am ill, I still shower and put a fragrance on, it's my weakness.

Barleyfields Sat 25-Jan-25 17:28:15

I don’t have a signature scent, I wear (gratefully!) whatever I’m given for Christmas and birthdays. My husband only buys me Rive Gauche. I also have numerous scents given to me by my son, currently Penhaligon’s Halfeti and Duchess Rose, Serge Lutyens’s Soir de Lune, Chanel No 5 and Clarins Aromatics Elixir. I love all of them but must say no perfume for next birthday so I can use some up, even though I wear perfume every day. If I didn’t have all these lovely perfumes given to me I would just buy for myself the original Anais Anais.

JamesandJon33 Sat 25-Jan-25 17:33:35

Trisha99 my friend bought a fake Mitsouko from the Perfume Parlour. She said she couldn’t tell the difference.

Ah the evocative scents of youth! I remember the distinctive smell of Ambre Solaire. I think there was only one kind of AS which was brownish, sticky oil but it smelled divine.

I loved Aqua Manda too but I was allergic to something in it so I used to wear my boyfriend's Old Spice Lime instead.

Barleyfields Sat 25-Jan-25 17:46:07

Oh yes, Ambre Solaire - when as a young teenager I believed I could acquire a South of France tan by lying in the back garden for a couple of hours, my very pale skin notwithstanding. 🤣

love0c Sat 25-Jan-25 17:47:58

Anais Anais by Cacharel .

Franski Sat 25-Jan-25 17:48:21

Chanel.mademoiselle..love it. Lighter than no5. Expensive but easy birthday/ christmas gift for DH to remember. I want to love Jo Malone - tried it a coyple of years ago) but it wears off after an hour. Such a rip off x

Parsley3 Sat 25-Jan-25 17:54:12

Casdon Sat 25-Jan-25 17:56:35

Forty years on,for evenings out I’m still a loyal Ysatis fan, and for everyday I like the White Company ones, particularly Santa Rosa and Lime and Bay.

dragonfly46 Sat 25-Jan-25 17:58:52

I only use Angel. I was complimented yesterday by a perfect stranger standing in a queue.

Oldbat1 Sat 25-Jan-25 18:17:30

A work colleague wore Poison which I hate. Gave me a headache. Luckily it was a job share and we only had a short hand over.
Im currently wearing Gucci Flora, Ghost, CK1 or Givenchy Amorigue. I finished my Anais Anais last year.

Love perfumes. Mil always wore Oscar de la Renta.

Granniesunite Sat 25-Jan-25 19:25:11

Samsara in winter it suits my skin and my AC love it . It seems that it transports them back in time to their childhood. Happy memories.

Jo Malone lime basil and mandarin is my summer go to.

I used the candles - same scent -in most of the rooms in the house all year round. It’s my weakness…..
