Do you have one? If so, what is it that you like about it?

I have a sample box of perfume from Saltworks. It's clever marketing, but the idea is that you buy sample boxes at varying prices. Each box comes with little vials of scent - ten per box, plus a voucher with a value that depends on how much you paid for the samples - the more you pay, the higher the discount. You try them out and decide which you prefer, and then trade in your voucher for ether a full bottle of your favourite, or a few travel sizes. They make good gifts if you don't know what the recipient would like, and there is a booklet with notes about each of the scents - a bit like wine tasting cards grin.

I'm working through the scents now to see which one to order, and it's got me thinking of favourites over the years. I loved Chanel 19 for a long time, and Jo Malone's Pomegranate Noir, but tried a few different ones that I got as presents or in duty free shops.

I liked the freshness of the 19 when I was younger, and the deeper, woodier notes of the PN later on. I've always liked patchouli/musky/vanilla scents, and am veering towards those with those notes in my sample box.

What about you? Do you stick to a particular scent, or chop and change as you find new ones?

I’m quite jealous of all your chat about perfume. I lost my scent of smell years ago so can’t smell any perfume at all. However I do wear Chanel
No 5 as it’s my DH’s favourite scent!

Never been keen on perfume and rarely wear it. My late mother-in-law always wore Chanel no 5 and when she came to visit us my younger daughter would always greet Grandma with a hug and say "nice stink". Chanel No 5 will forever be "nice stink" in our family.

I occasionally use my husband's fragrances. Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille is lush on him but pretty good on me too!
Also his Tom Ford Plum Japonais - which may have originally been a women's or unisex fragrance but is perfect on him.
I think he "suits" heady perfumes with floral top notes and more male/woody/animal undertones.
The Jean Paul Gaultier Fleur du Male is another discontinued lush (and sexy) fragrance on him.. - but it's not very nice on me!

JamesandJon33 Avon topaze used to come in all sorts of bottle shapes, the one I remember was shaped like the old dispenser bottles they used to have on chemist's shelves, but obviously in miniature size.

I was once given Givenchy 'Interdit' as a Christmas present by our best man, who always had a thing for me, I think he was trying to tell me something! grin

I took ages to choose a perfume as a Xmas present from my husband. I'm not really very familiar with the many named by people here. I decided on Chanel Coco Madamoiselle. BUT.....its turned out to be a huge disappointment. I can barely smell it on myself or my clothes. Definitely no lasting power as far as I'm concerned! My husband is usually very astute about fragrances.....and he agrees with me. Soooo 😞 disappointed.

What a lovely thread , so many many perfumes that I remember now reading this. I love channel no 5 and when my dad died 3 years ago treated myself to a 100ml bottle with the money he left me. Sadly on my first using I was staying in a lodge with a tiled bathroom floor , dropped the bottle and it smashed? I was heart broken. Bathroom smelt divine mind you😂. I kept saying I will save up for some more, but haven’t quite had enough to warrant it yet.

I also liked a one from body shop but it was discontinued. Think it was called ?? Fig? Also rain flowers by Boots many years ago. Can anyone remember a scent called Manhattan?

My favourite perfume is Very Irresistible by Givency, and I use Lady Million, as an alternative!
I did like Chanel 19 when I was younger.

As a teenager it was Avon Topaze, anyone remember that one?
Now I wear Channel Allure when given some, it is so expensive.

I use to wear Chanel Allure, but my niece bought me Avon So FarAway, I got way more compliments for the Avon perfume

Granmarderby10 Mon 27-Jan-25 17:24:44

Over 20 years ago I bought a Caroline Hererra perfume and it was called just “Caroline” I loved it straight away and it came with a small handbag sized bottle and a candle in a glass container! From old Debenhams.

I Can’t seem to find it anymore.

I also bought a Thierry Mugler cologne that was intended to be unisex. It came in a light green glass bottle and there was an interchangeable top that could be a sprayer or a shaker.

Does anyone else remember these two?

Mt61 Mon 27-Jan-25 17:27:43

I use to like Estée Lauder’s Cinnabar, then started wearing Estée Lauder’s knowing.
AN Estée Lauder rep once told me that men loved Youth Dew, it was nick- named, “liquid sex” can’t imagine why?

Nowt nicer than the smell of babies🤣

I seem to have settled on Hermes 24 Faubourg and never feel dressed (or undressed) without a spritz of it. Been using it for 20 years now and I do sometimes try a different fragrance, but it never makes me feel quite the same. Interesting that it’s not just about the smell, is it … but about the way it makes us feel when we wear it. ❤️

Vintagegirl Mon 27-Jan-25 18:54:20

Asthma that developed in my 30's so I have to be careful with any scents but I still have Chanel no 5 bottle (Cologne?) given to me as a 21st birthday present by my father many years ago. Dioressence was another favourite that I had a sample of but a favourite aunt bought me a bottle when she found out. I dont think it can be had anymore... citrus maybe?

Mojack26 Mon 27-Jan-25 19:02:10

🤣🤣🤣

CanadianGran Mon 27-Jan-25 19:09:58

I think my signature has been a green tea or citrusy floral. For years I've worn Elizabeth Arden Green Tea, and have veered off to White Tea, or O de Lancome.

I didn't realize I had a signature scent, but my daughter was out somewhere and instantly recognized it on someone else.

Every morning I have a spritz after my shower; to me it smells clean and fresh.

I have tried other scents, but always end up going back to this. As for the Jo Malone ones, I had a few small sample bottles, but to me they disappeared ten minutes after spraying, so I can't understand the expense.

Arto1s Mon 27-Jan-25 19:27:31

Chanel Number 5 during the day.
Hermes 24 Faubourg if going out in the evening (it’s quite “heavy”)
Just bought what was supposed to be a replica of Helena Rubinstein’s Apple Blossom to remind me of my teenage years, BUT, nothing like - very disappointed.

Jennynanna Mon 27-Jan-25 19:35:50

Your right there 😊 though the napisan isn't the nicest smell 🤣
