Mother sentenced for twins’ deaths

She has serious mental heath problems and was a lone parent to two sets of twins, just a year apart. It is impossible that she could have coped.
The house was dirty and untidy. Of course it was. She left the children alone to go shopping, which she must have known she shouldn’t, but it takes about half an hour to get four small children ready to leave the house and imagine the difficulties of getting four lively under-fives along busy roads to the shop, then back again.
A nursery would not allow one adult to do this. Why was she not given the help she desperately needed?
Losing her whole family in a fire, knowing it was her fault, is punishment enough, without locking her up for ten years.
I feel so sad and angry.

Why didn't the father do anything? Beautiful boys, let down.

Perhaps read the sentencing remarks.

The judge said:
You and Dalton separated when the younger boys were about 6 months old. As a result, much of the responsibility for day-to-day care of those four children fell to you.
Your parents, Dalton’s grandmother, mother and step-father, and to some extent Dalton himself, all played a role in assisting with care.

School and nursery staff spoke about the lively nature of the four boys. They were clearly deeply loved by all who had any role in their care and development.

That's interesting phrasing there.

Manslaughter does not carry a mandatory prison sentence. If only prison was a place where there were genuine rehabilitation there might be a point, or we had places fitting that bill for community sentencing.

I asked if the poster disagreed with the verdict, not with the sentencing.

Oh dear, crossed wires, here.

I wasn't referring to your post, but had been following up interest in manslaughter and prison sentences after earlier posts from others who had referred to prison. (to see how unusual it was to get the length of sentence she did), also concern about how she could best be sentenced.

No, it's not unusual and the judge stated thst the sentence was lenient on the grounds of her health. The sentences were concurrent.
She will serve two-thirds in custody then be eligible for parole.
