Are you an early bird or a night owl?

I tend to get up fairly early but stay in bed and do wordle and quordle whilst having a cuppa, fact is I can’t just jump out of bed bright eyed and bushy tailed in the morning, I need to take my time. So am not really an early bird and never have been. I much prefer staying up late at night to read or watch something on Netflix.
So what do you prefer, early mornings or late nights?

Both.

Night owl. When I lived alone I got into a very good habit of going to bed at 9.30pm and getting up early. But as I'm not very active now, I'm not worn out enough to go to sleep at night. I also find when it's quiet at night, I can concentrate on things somehow and tend to do various organising things late at night. It's a pain though as if I do have to get up early for something it's a struggle!

I go to bed around 10.30pm but then read gransnet forum for 30 mins or so. Set the alarm clock for 9 am, Can't get to sleep, so usually make a cup of tea and go back to bed again. I take sleeping tablets, but they don't seem to help.

I definitely prefer to be a night owl. But the dog makes sure I'm an early bird too!

Rula Thu 30-Jan-25 23:40:51

Been a night owl all my life.

I love being in the living room at 3sm. Dark and quiet. Just love it. In the summer I'll sit outside. Then as the day appears I'll creep into bed.

I worked nights for 15 years. Then an evening shift for 5 years. 9-5 never suited.

Mr Rula is an early bird. But it's never caused any problems thank goodness!

I like early mornings but rarely see them as I also like to push bedtime later & later, often to 2 or 3am.
I'm always reluctant to get out of my cosy bed but if I have to have an early start, I'm fine as soon as I'm out of the bed.

When I was working, before snooze buttons, I had an alarm by the bed & another on the other side of the room and set for 5 minutes later.

A natural lark. Once awake I'm wide awake but don't get up till after 7 in winter.
Ready for bed by 9.30.

Night owl. Years of having to get up early for school runs/ work etc made me feel very resentful! Retirement is bliss. I tell all my family and friends that I’m not available till 1pm at the earliest. 🤣

A lifelong owl. I rarely go to bed before midnight and then I will read until I realise nothing is making any sense. All too often, I wake up in the small hours with my glasses on my nose and the Kindle on the floor. If I have to get up early, you could hear me complaining from several miles away - luckily I live alone. 'Early' is any time before 9am.

Definitely an early bird. Iam usually asleep by 10 and awake by six. Up no later than 7

Night owl. I could count on one hand the number of times I've seen a sunrise. Shame, as when I do ever manage to get up early I get so much more done. But the lure of the warm bed and soft duvet mean I could easily stay there till about 9.30. But I don't enjoy breakfast. Is that common for someone who stays up late? My DD is the opposite, always up at the crack of dawn and really hungry the minute she wakes.

I am jet lagged this week but lately I seem to need my bed earlier and earlier. Wake up at silly o’clock then linger in bed until 9 ish. Must be winter. Roll on lighter mornings

Early bird.

kittylester Fri 31-Jan-25 16:30:09

Love that, Marmight.

Can’t describe myself as a lark, really, as I tend to wake between 8 & 9 am depending how tired I am. I suppose I’m more owl, but my bedtime varies depending how tired I feel so can be anything between 10 pm and 12.30am. I think I more accurately fit marmight’s pigeon 😂😂.

Same as you Babs03, especially with tv watching etc, it seems to be only time i can have to myself with no chores/meals to do.I knit then too, while tv is on, i've always been a multitasker. And like you i make a cuppa, in my room, to take my time getting up.we are kindred spirits.Been hard lately though, as giving meds to cat every 6hrs round the clock.Hes getting better though.

Cossy Sun 02-Feb-25 11:49:39

Sadly, I’m neither now!

I used to get up pretty early whilst working, when still fit and healthy, and go to bed late late.

These days I’m a late riser and early to bed!

Allira

5 am is the middle of the night 😯

I agree

Nannan2 Sun 02-Feb-25 11:56:19

Yes, while doing the cat meds, definitely more like the pigeon😆😴

Before my job working in Residential care with teenagers I had a normal sleep pattern ie bed at 11pm straight asleep up at 7.15am. After 8 years working 24 hrs shifts where you were almost always up until 1am and often 3am I now can't sleep until 2am and wake around 9.30. I've tried many times to get back to my original sleep pattern but just end up tossing and turning unable to sleep for most of the night. So I go to bed at 1am then read til 2am then straight asleep. I'm not much good before midday so all appointments are usually afternoons. Works for me.

nanasam Sun 02-Feb-25 11:59:55

I'm neither - I go to bed at 9.30 and wake up at 9.30. When my time comes, I'll probably just not wake up!

grandMattie Sun 02-Feb-25 12:03:35

I’ve always been a lark but now I’ve been described as a “extreme” lark, waking up around 330 onwards.
Now a widow, I stay in bed, have one (or two) drinks, answer mails, read, etc. before having a shower and getting my paper around 7.
I do have z short nap most afternoons otherwise I’d be asleep by 9 pm!

HousePlantQueen Sun 02-Feb-25 12:05:57

After years of getting children to school, commuting etc., I am thoroughly enjoying my mornings. In the winter, I tend not to go to bed until at least 11:30, but no reading in bed. Then the night begins; if I am lucky I sleep until about 2:30, then up to the loo, and then fidget/sleep/ache/turn over until I fall into an exhausted sleep at about 6am. Up around 8;30, then slow breakfast. Surprisingly, I function quite well, so perhaps I am getting more sleep than I think I am. In the summer, I get up earlier as I love my wander around the garden, coffee in hand.

I used to be a lark when I had to travel into the office for 9am, used to leave the house just after 7am to avoid the traffic and was often in the office before 8 am. It made more sense to be in the office preparing for my day as if I waited to be in the office just before 9 I’d have had to leave the house by 7:20 and would’ve spent most of that time sitting in nose to tail traffic.

David49 Sun 02-Feb-25 12:09:58

We’re both larks always have been 5am tea watch the news in bed breakfast at leisurely 6.30. Bed 10 pm suits us both we’ve plenty to fill each day.
