Are you an early bird or a night owl?

I tend to get up fairly early but stay in bed and do wordle and quordle whilst having a cuppa, fact is I can’t just jump out of bed bright eyed and bushy tailed in the morning, I need to take my time. So am not really an early bird and never have been. I much prefer staying up late at night to read or watch something on Netflix.
So what do you prefer, early mornings or late nights?

I’m a lark. I go to bed about 10, read until 11, then straight to sleep and wake between 5&6, after a couple of nocturnal trips to the bathroom ☹️

Etoile2701 Sun 02-Feb-25 12:22:58

Definitely a lark. I get up between 7 and 7.30 and start panicking if I have to stay up after 10.30. My DH is the complete opposite.

I was always a night owl.
I worked late or night shifts only,as I couldn't trust myself to get up early.

I did manage to get up, ad the years went on, but I've never enjoyed it.

Bed between 10 and half past usually, read for about forty minutes, up anytime between 7&8, straight out of bed, no TV in our bedroom.

Definitely an early bird, think it’s years of being a newsagent!
Wake at five, tea at six but oh the luxury of then staying in bed reading the paper and doing puzzles! Up at eight and straight out for a walk. Always ready for bed by nine though!

I used to be a night-owl, but since my husband's last illness when I slept with one ear open, as he needed help overnight, I find myself waking at seven in the morning - shockingly early for me.

Now nearly 18 months after my husband's death, I am beginning to occasionally sleep until eight, so perhaps the night-owl is on her way back.

A night owl. Rarely in bed before midnight, and read for a while. I set my alarm for 8.00 - but don’t always get up then. I could fall asleep in the early evening, though don’t, and vow that, tonight, I’ll go to bed much earlier, but by about 9.30, I have a new lease of life. I might do some ironing, or wash the kitchen floor, and have forgotten all about going to bed. I used to let myself in to my late mum’s flat about 11.00am, and find her still asleep. She would watch tv in bed, and not fall asleep until the early hours. I didn’t think that was good for her, but I now see how that can happen!

About 1am is my normal early ish bedtime.

I lie in and read, answer emails listen to the news etc. I'm usually up until we'll after midnight and hardly ever get out of bed before 9 with the advantage that walking the dog happens after school run has finished and it's quieter. I do have to get up at 8 to quickly let the dog out for a pee in the garden so she can wait for a later walkies.

I suppose I am an early bird, wake about 4.30 and up at 5, go to bed about 9.30 to 10.00 no later.

MrsMatt Sun 02-Feb-25 14:28:41

I start work at 4am, and get up at 3am
I need a large coffee before I start the day. Luckily I work literally less than 500 metres from my home. So I am an early morning bird but not by choice

NonGrannyMoll Sun 02-Feb-25 14:30:37

Definitely a night owl. I HATE mornings! To be fair, I was trained to be this way from an early age - Dad was a musician, ex was a musician, current DH is a musician. They don't keep normal hours! I love to go out for walks in the dark, I feel more alive then than at any other time. Weirdo...

In Summer I am an earlier bird, around 7.30, but Winter definitely a Night Lark and frequently am not up before nine, even then it's a reluctant get out of bed.

Bit of both. Rarely in bed before 1 am then I read until I feel ready to sleep - about 30/40mins. Can be awake again before six and that's me but not out of bed until near 8 am unless I have to get up earlier. I don't have naps or 40 winks during the day. Wush I could go to be earlier, have tried

Gingster Sun 02-Feb-25 15:28:52

I’m a bit of both.
Go to bed around 11 even if I’ve been dozing in the chair. Read or I pad for an hour and then up by 7 am for a cuppa and snuggle with the dog.

Night owl. I do my best work in the evenings when no one distracts me and wants me to do other stuff.

BERYLC Sun 02-Feb-25 15:42:49

Definitely an early bird, usually up around 7am but 5 o clock is not uncommon. If I'm awake i like get up maybe lay around a bit longer if it's really cold but not too long. I have 2 little furry friends wanting their breakfast.

MissAdventure Sun 02-Feb-25 15:46:00

I have read somewhere that the night owl/lark tendencies depend on the time one was born.

I think I was born in the afternoon, though, so I'm not sure how that pans out.

Musicgirl Sun 02-Feb-25 16:22:21

I am naturally more of an owl than a lark, but would rather be a lark as I get my best music practise in early rather than late. I would rather do most of my household chores in the morning. The thing I find is that many larks seem to feel superior to owls in real life.

Oh that's interesting !

I was born at 2am which could explain my night owl tendencies

wetflannel Sun 02-Feb-25 16:34:38

I'm a night owl seldom in bed before midnight and sleep until 8/9 in the morning. Hubby is seldom awake after 10pm but is up at silly o'clock in the mornings.

Definitely a lark!

Having t children ensured we got up early or they wouldn't have made it to school.

We still wake up at 5.30 and have two in bed until about 7.30. We watch Breakfast news, keep in touch with the family, do word games and chat.

We are often in bed by 9 and read for an hour or so.

My goodness! I wouldn’t be impressed if my family rang me around 5.30 to 7.30, much as I love them! My daughters MIL used to wake at about 5am and would text me. I eventually had to ask her not to contact me before 9am.

pascal30 Sun 02-Feb-25 16:45:06

Definitely a night owl now.. especially when it's so cold. Read til about 1 or 2 and then don't get up til 9ish.. my electric blanket makes being in bed very attractive

Madmeg Sun 02-Feb-25 17:02:19

Night owl, though not as late as when I was younger. Whatever time I go to bed I seem to wake about 7.30 and having scoliosis I get up immediately and sometimes nod off again at the kitchen table. DH sleeps for about ten hours nowadays.

Allsaints55 Sun 02-Feb-25 17:09:30
