Do you like it, and how do you like it done?
Dark/light and just buttered, or with Marmite, peanut butter, or jam and marmalade?

merlotgran Mon 03-Feb-25 09:49:19

I love dipping buttered toast in home made soup.

I love dipping buttered toast in home made soup.

Oh please stop it!
Just had breakfast and am getting hungry again.
I like the toast to be cold so you can spread the butter thickly then it melts as you dip it in the soup.
🤤

Sourdough or granary, medium to dark toasted, with oodles of butter and either black cherry jam or thick peel Seville marmalade

annodomini Mon 03-Feb-25 10:24:32

Golden, with butter, squashed banana and marmalade. Usually my Sunday breakfast

Witzend Mon 03-Feb-25 11:18:46

Usually just with butter, or butter and marmalade.
Now and then with butter and a scrape of Marmite.

MissAdventure Mon 03-Feb-25 11:21:01

I think someone here has said thick marmite.
It makes me shudder if it's more than a scraping.

merlotgran Mon 03-Feb-25 13:18:48

DH liked to slather on the marmite so I would insist on doing my own toast but he did introduce me to beans on toast with marmite spread on the toast before adding the beans.

Yum!!

Meduum, butter as hot as possible, so the butter melts.

I eat it depending on my mood with butter alone, butter and jam or marmelade, or with cheese.

NonGrannyMoll Mon 03-Feb-25 14:14:10

Good bread, lightly done. Butter, good-quality spread or (depending upon what else I'm putting on) peanut butter. Hardly ever a sweet topping, usually Marmite, sandwich spread or a fried egg. I hardly ever eat toast just as itself and never for breakfast - it's usually part of lunch or supper.

The best toast I have ever had has been white bread, not sure whether it was butter or spread, with a cup of tea after the birth of my children.

I was also brought this after giving birth to my daughter but my husband ate it all as he hadn’t had lunch!

TwiceAsNice Mon 03-Feb-25 17:11:04

Medium toasted usually with thick cut marmalade or apricot jam. Granary or sourdough bread.
Sometimes peanut butter sometimes two slices with peanut butter on one and marmalade/jam on the other.
Never marmite I absolutely hate it, even the smell

TwiceAsNice Mon 03-Feb-25 17:11:56

I too remember the toast and tea after childbirth absolutely the best thing ever

Greyduster Mon 03-Feb-25 17:21:57

I like whole meal bread, medium toasted, with peanut butter and sliced banana on it. Or Marmite.

MissAdventure Mon 03-Feb-25 17:24:39

I like Rose's lime marmalade on toast, but it costs a blooming lot, now.

Grandmafrench Mon 03-Feb-25 17:25:09

Toasted to just golden, with topping of unsalted butter and marmalade, cheese and apricot jam, or peanut butter on mashed banana. Any good bread, but toast must be COLD.

MissAdventure Mon 03-Feb-25 17:26:56

Yes.
Its floppy if it's hot, and worse if the slices are put one on top of the other.

Interesting that so many of you like it burned. Is it because it has more flavour? Certainly most bread has very little taste to it, unless it's homemade.
I like a good strong marmalade on mine.

I don’t want to be a spoilsport, as I love well-done toast too, but I’m sure I read somewhere that burnt toast, especially when it’s very burnt, causes cancer.
Mind you, what doesn’t, these days?

JamesandJon33 Mon 03-Feb-25 18:04:39

I like my toast cold. Lots of butter and M&S Clementines Marmalade

Yes I love this. Also golden shred. But my favourite jam which is never usually available is quince jam. I generally have to order it online from Tiptree.

CanadianGran Mon 03-Feb-25 18:23:01

I'm a bit surprised at the burnt and cold toast; why on earth?

A nice slice of hot and golden whole wheat with either raspberry jam, or peanut butter and a tiny bit of honey.

Or white bread with butter dipped in egg yolk, better yet if cut in soldiers.

Another favourite is raisin cinnamon bread with butter, yum.

MissAdventure Mon 03-Feb-25 18:26:49

Because it's more crisp.
I love food with texture. smile

Trisha99 Mon 03-Feb-25 18:29:45

Stop it J&J33 you’re making me crave some! Cold toast with Aldi Passion Fruit curd- that was lunch today, so healthy grin

My fondest toast memory is, at the age of five, using my grandparents' toasting fork near to the open fire. A thick slice of their bloomer. Then spread with beef dripping with a little salt and pepper. Happy memories. Nowadays, toasted sourdough with marmite and crunchy peanut butter.

Ooh yes! On a Monday, dripping from yesterday's roast on hot toast with a sprinkling of salt. If it was a roast.chicken, I fry the kidney lightly and put on top for an extra treat.

LauraNorderr

I like my toast golden, no butter, thick scraping of marmite and a spread of honey. Mmmm

At the same time?! Please say not😆

Oh but yes, think sweet and salty - it’s yummy. I’m greedy and have butter on the toast too, though this is absolutely a ‘treat’.

flappergirl Mon 03-Feb-25 20:56:39

It's got to be white bread for me (yes, I know I'm a heathen) fairly dark toasted and allowed to cool in a toast rack. Then, lashings of very good quality salted butter, cut into fingers and dipped in a runny boiled egg with a little sea salt and white pepper. Alternatively spread with a good sharp tasting marmalade. And now I want some!
