A 54 year old woman was visited by Police because she posted a criticism on social media about the the Labour politician who shared offensive messages on a What’sApp group. Should we be careful what we say on GN? 😬

I've heard all this condemnation before. The same when police were beaten up at Manchester Airport. Always believe the worst about the police until the truth emerges.

Churchview Sun 23-Feb-25 17:40:15

Allira It was your response In the meantime the crime rate in Greater Manchester is one of the highest in the country, shopkeepers are terrorised by shoplifters, vandalism is rife and three out of four crimes are not investigated by police. to which I was replying.

I knew exactly what the previous poster meant and thought it spot on. The Daily mail are obsessed with house prices, ages and 'dangerous curves'.

Good post Churchview
People always seem to be able to do the job of the police better. I wonder how they would fare in some situations our police have to face in their work.

I made the point about sending two detectives. As the mother of a serving officer, who when he was in uniform was violently attacked by a drug dealer, I'd rather uniformed officers were double crewed, but apparently the Met doesn't have the numbers to do that. I'm well aware of how the police are viewed and treated.

Rosie51 Sun 23-Feb-25 17:54:01

And I know this wasn't the Met but Manchester but the same applies.

My DH was a serving police officer for 30 years and spent time in hospital as a result of doing his job.
It's a difficult job and is often not appreciated by the public. One of our friends died as a result of an attack.

theworriedwell Sun 23-Feb-25 18:47:50

So according to the article she had a 6 minute phone call where she was told they needed to inform her someone had made a complaint about her, told she hadn't committed any offence and nothing else was going to happen? Talk about a drama about nothing.

theworriedwell Sun 23-Feb-25 18:52:41

AGAA4 hope your husband is ok now. My husband is disabled as a result if doing his job, didn't quite make his 30 years as he was pensioned out as 100% disabled. The police was always the career he wanted, broke him when they told him he would never work again. He's now been a police pensioner for longer than he was a police officer. It wasn't just his life that changed, mine did as did the children's, the youngest was 10 days old at the time and has never known his father as the man he was.

I'm so sorry you, your husband and family have had to go through this as a result of him doing his job. My husband was hurt several times during his time as a police officer and died not long after retiring on ill health grounds at age 51.

No they turned up at her house and she didnt let them in. Which was the right thing to do.

But, as you always seem to misinterpret or misunderstand anything I post, frankly, I don't give a damn.

Cossy Sun 23-Feb-25 19:47:11

Goodness, I agree the police often get a rough deal (in the media).

thanks flowers to those gransnetters whose DH and families affected by members of the public attacking them.

AGAA4 Sun 23-Feb-25 19:51:19

Thank you Cossy.

I've worked with the police, AGAA4 and do understand what a dangerous and difficult job it can be as well as sometimes heartbreaking and stomach-churning.

I'm not in any way dismissing the job they do but in this case the first report to the police was obviously malicious. Presumably they had to follow this up (protocol) but, if it was the Councillor or ond of his associates stirring up y0trouble, he should be ashamed and charged with wasting police time.

As far as we know, no threats were made, so surely someone more senior could have looked at this and dismissed it as nonsense with no follow-up required?

That isn't what the dailymail article says. It says they went to the house but she was out, when she got home she spoke to them on the phone.

theworriedwell Sun 23-Feb-25 20:16:21

AGAA4 I'm so sorry. So many times we've heard similar things about people my husband worked with. He's an outlier as I don't think many draw their pension for over 30 years.

theworriedwell Sun 23-Feb-25 20:17:12

Allira the police said they are obliged to inform her of the complaint.

theworriedwell Sun 23-Feb-25 20:17:38

Thanks Cossy.

woodenspoon Sun 23-Feb-25 20:20:13

According to news reports the councillor or partner made the complaint.

AGAA4 Sun 23-Feb-25 20:21:05

Allira you may be right and a more senior officer could have dealt with it better. I know how stretched the police are and this could have been handed to a sergeant to deal with.
We don't know how experienced the staff who handled the complaint were and may have been a bit too eager.

It seems like a storm in a teacup that has grown out of all proportion by journalists to try to discredit the police whenever they can.

theworriedwell Sun 23-Feb-25 20:22:28

Galaxy I just read the daily mail article again. It definitely says she was out looking after baby grandchild when the officers called and spoke to her husband. She went home and got a call at 2.15 and spoke to an officer. Is another paper reporting a different version. I went via the link on the first page.

It says one of the officers was a sergeant. They weren't investigating, they were letting her know there had been a complaint.

Can you imagine if they hadn't told her and the online stuff got more heated and she said something that she would get arrested for? Then it would be moaning about oh if only the police had warned me this person was making complaints id have ignored him and now I'm arrested. It's all the fault if the police.

You can't win.

I pressed the quote button and my post followed your name and post as this one will. I don't know what more I could have done. If I misinterpret your posts I do apologise. You are free to explain if you can give a damn.
