I have reached the point in my recovery where the news of Mummy Pig (of Peppa Pig fame) is expecting her third baby in the summer was actually interesting

I watched a reporter on the show biz section of breakfast news interview a cartoon pig!

I have even put it on the family WhatsApp group chat šŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļø

What have you resorted to doing whilst confined to barracks

GrannyGravy13 Thu 27-Feb-25 14:29:19

I can get around the house with crutches and have been out to dinner to local restaurants (phoning ahead to ensure that I can have a chair to put my legs up)

It has just brought it home to me how much time I spend out and about and doing things I am not by nature a sitter 😹

Webcams of bird feeding stations in Europe and across the world. You need to be aware of time differences, but I could get easily absorbed watching all the different birds and critters popping up. Apart from that I relied on crochet and listening to audio books, especially biographies where it's not so essential to be able to remember what had happened previously..

I have no new suggestions Grannygravy but I do thank you for the first belly laugh in a long long time

Commiserations GG, I experienced similar when I broke my arm recently. At home more I found myself watching Escape to the Country, I was always aware of the programme but never really watched it. During my incarceration, I became hooked, worse than a drug habit it was. When I started going out and about I got withdrawal symptoms around 3pm so now, not always, I arrange my day around that programme, sad really hmm Other than that I added German to my French on Duolingo and read a lot more.

Wishing you a speedy recovery it's a drag and I experienced a loss of confidence walking, although my accident was on a rough terrain . Now I do more walking on the treadmill at my gym. My husband perfected blow drying my hair, when my right arm was out of action, now he thinks he's a hairdresser, and insists he does it in perpetuity, allegedly I don't do it as well as him, neither does my "actual" hairdresser grin

This is a real reflection of my experience - not by nature a sitter. Being confined to barracks and dependent on my daughters or friends, even for milk/bread relatively soon after my husband’s death was a challenge.

Try spinning:-) Gentle use of legs

I am allowed gentle bending of one leg since Monday, the fractured foot (other leg) is somewhat problematic.

I follow the exercises religiously, it’s the loss of spontaneity and independence which I find frustrating.

Thank you for your suggestions regarding tracing my family tree, my brother in law has gone back centuries, and has put it all on line for the rest of the family.

Lovetopaint037 I haven’t painted or drawn since my art O level, I might get the GC colouring pencils out and have a go.

Has your brother-in-law done your side of the family or your husband's?
I've researched both sides, then of course it splits and keeps splitting, gone off down unexplored avenues which looked interesting and linked up with others doing the same.
It can be time-consuming and fascinating and it's surprising what you can find, good and not so good!

Crochet? You can buy blanket kits complete with patterns and follow the pattern and videos weekly.

Painting is relaxing and you can get lost in it.

Great news about Peppa Pig's family - what does George think?

When I was shielding for two years during the pandemic, I became hooked on Korean medical dramas, then progressed to Turkish dramas.

Unfortunately, rehab has had no effect. I am watching one just now. If I hear Baby Shark one more time, I will scream and have locked myself in the conservatory.
It is papa's turn now. He has got off lightly so far!!

I don't drive so have to rely on my DH or public transport to get anywhere. Otherwise I have to walk. Have you got Netflix or YouTube?

glammagran Thu 27-Feb-25 17:00:29

DD wouldn’t allow her children to watch Peppa Pig as she said it would make them answer back. As a result they —never answer back— are very well behaved. grin

glammagran Thu 27-Feb-25 17:00:55

I’ve no idea why strikethrough did not work.

Lathyrus3 Thu 27-Feb-25 17:20:25

I’m m confined to the house too at the moment.

Bvious,y by the number of posts I have racked up today my main hobby is Gransnet.

I can also tell you a lot about Britain’s Greatest Cathedrals and Judge Judy😳

Subversive Peppa Pig!

I am not a sitter by nature either, so I have had to keep VERY mentally occupied or I would go mad. I can get out on the mobility scooter sometimes - it's just getting to the car. I will probably have to get a wheelchair for inside the house.

Subversive Peppa Pig!

My Primary One colleague would not allow Peppa to be mentioned in her class. She said that Peppa was a naughty girl and a bad influence on children.šŸ˜‚

My DIL banned Peppa Pig, too. When I struggled to walk a few years ago I caught up with lots of films that I’d been meaning to watch. It’s changed so much since then and I’m now spoilt for choice with podcasts, box sets, catchup tv etc. I’ll be subscribing to Audible at some point. I can’t walk the way that I used to and I feel so lucky that I can do so much in the house, including chatting to people. The thing I miss more than anything is going to the gym and sauna. I’m basically a very lazy person and sadly am happy to have an excuse to be a couch potato ( although it might be my way of dealing with not being able to walk the distances I used to).

Allira Thu 27-Feb-25 20:32:20

Oh well, my DGD watched Peppa Pig when they were here.
They seem to be very polite despite that!

Grannmarie Thu 27-Feb-25 20:32:23

Many years ago, I was 'confined to barracks' after radioactive treatment for my overactive thyroid. I wasn't allowed near my Primary One class for three weeks.
I wasn't accustomed to sitting or watching TV in the daytime, but I became a fan of the BoxSet, watching every episode of 24 and The West Wing.
Hope you can find something gripping to watch, Grannygravy. šŸ“ŗ Remember the frozen peas for your knee!

woodenspoon Thu 27-Feb-25 20:38:21

My little grandson loves Peppa Pig. He is extremely polite and well spoken. I’ve a feeling he has learned quite a bit from Peppa. When he visited us he was very disappointed that his grandpa didn’t have a strawberry patch like grandpa pig.

I have had a few bouts of ill health in past months that kept me housebound. I found a library app Borrowbox a lifesaver as could listen to audio books when not up to reading.

foxie48 Thu 27-Feb-25 21:29:32

I'm another who has taken up painting late in life. I've had several periods of being confined to barracks and it's been a Godsend. I've also become an avid podcast listener and watched some TV in the afternoon which was previously unheard of!
Get better soon, I feel your frustration.

TattyBluebell Thu 27-Feb-25 23:11:37

Build Lego.
I'm serious! They do a whole botanical range with flowers and plants which are lovely to build.

Casdon Thu 27-Feb-25 23:25:37

Try the puzzles on the Sky News page. I waste time every day on the Sudoku, I refuse to give in until I’ve cracked it, it gives a good brain workout, and a complete escape because you really have to concentrate.

merlotgran Thu 27-Feb-25 23:41:05

I was laid up for most of last December following an op so thought I’d give audio books a try but my attention kept wandering so I cancelled the subscription and went back to reading and binge watching Netflix.

I was so glad when I could get back in the car.

Taichinan Sat 01-Mar-25 09:10:03

Tattiebluebell I had never heard of Lego for adults until I came across a Lego shop in Edinburgh a couple of months ago. I was amazed!!

Iam64 Sat 01-Mar-25 11:07:29

Merlotgran, losing the ability to use the car was something I found a challenge. I dread the possibility of it happening again.
