Cuthbert, Dibble and Grub. Anyone remember these little firemen from Trumpton? For some reason I started thinking about them this morning and remember sitting to watch Trumpton, Camberwick Green and, I think the other one was Chigley, over the years with grandchildren. They were such lovely stories, personally think they were nicer than those they have these days.

Sarnia - it's from Chigley, happy memories!

Time flies by when I'm the driver of a train
And I ride on the footplate there and back again
Under bridges over bridges to our destination
Puffing through the countryside there's so much to be seen.
Passengers waving as we steam through a station.
Stoke up fireman for the signal is at green.

Time flies by when I'm the driver of a train
And I ride on the footplate there and back again
In the cutting, through the tunnel,
Rushing clanking on the track.
Wheezing pistons, smoking funnels,
Turning wheels go clickety clack.

Time flies by when I'm the driver of a train
And I ride on the footplate there and back again.

Or there's apparently another version:

Thank you so much for the words! I have been out and about this morning tidying up 3 family graves and snatches of this song have been coming back to me. Thanks for filling in the gaps.
An interesting alternative version. grin

"The Saga of Noggin the Nog".

I can still see it and I can still hear the voices.
Oliver Postern????

"This stuff gets in your head" as Derren Brown is wont to say.

I remember watching Tales of the Riverbank with my little sister. One day recently the tune popped into my head so I looked for it.
Here it is

My DD's favourite was Bagpus and DS loved Postman Pat.

We didn’t have television when I was young. It was ‘Listen with Mother’ on the wireless.”Are you sitting comfortably? Then I’ll begin. “.
My son’ s favourite was always the Herbs, Parsley the lion especially.

Noggin the Nog was devised by the lovely Oliver Postgate, who was also the source of the Clangers, my favourite.
My home town has a blue plaque outside his house, featuring the Clangers.

I loved watching Trumpton and Chigley. I also enjoyed Tales of the Riverbank, The Wooden Tops, Andy Pandy and The Flowerpot Men. I can still sing the the songs and recite the fireman's names. I wasn't so impressed with the new digital versions of the children's programmes when my girls were small. How things change, not always for the better.

Millymouge, you nailed it. very poignant for me as a retired flour miller making flour for the biscuit factory and with several associates in the fire service, my kids loved all of them

Anyone remember Twuzzle, from about 1956? With his friends Jiffy the Broomstick Man and Footso:
"I'm Footso the silliest cat, When I walk, I always fall flat. I've big yellow eyes and big flat paws, I'm Footso the cat that Twizzle adores. Mrrow Mrrow purr purr, I'm the cat with the silkiest fur, Four big paws and whiskers six, I'm not very clever but know lots of tricks, Mrrow Mrrow that's my call, I'm the silliest cat of them all, When I sleep I always dream Of herrings and kippers and creamy cream, Mrrow Mrrow Mrrow"

I remember when I first went away to college that everyone would go to the main sitting area to watch The Magic Roundabout..

Chicklette Wed 12-Mar-25 14:19:09

My youngest brother used to sing:
Yoo hoo
Barney McGrew
Custard, Dribble and Scrub.
It still makes me smile when I think of it.

Mr Rumpling from Chigley sings my favourite song.

We didn’t have a TV when we were little, but I remember the WoodenTops. We do a movement at Aquafit that reminds me of how Spotty Dog walked.

Allira Wed 12-Mar-25 14:36:14

We didn't have a television until I was about seven and I can remember the first programme I watched was Bill and Ben, the Flowerpot Men, with Little Weed. I was probably too old for that type of programme but it was such a novelty I enjoyed it, as well as Muffin the Mule.

There were other programmes about animals, I'm sure it was David Attenborough who presented some of them. Was it Zoo Quest?

missdeke Wed 12-Mar-25 14:54:45

We didn't get a tv until I was 7 although we used to watch Rin Tin Tin at a friends house before Brownies every week. I find the trouble with modern childtren's tv is that it always seems to be loud and shouty with loud music. The gentler ones like Peppa Pig seem few and far between.

I live in the village that was the inspiration for Camberwick Green. The villages that were immortalised as Trumpton and Chigley are just three miles away. There actually used to be a windmill in this village although there's no trace of it now. Sadly, our little village is under threat of being overwhelmed by huge new housing estates.

Pugh pugh Barney McGrew, Cuthbert, Dibble and Grub. Why can I still remember that and not what I did yesterday 🤪🤪🤪

grandMattie Wed 12-Mar-25 16:24:47

My children loved Camberwick Green, etc., Bagpuss, Mr. Benn and Chokablock!

LovesBach Wed 12-Mar-25 16:28:55

Did anyone else like 'Will Quack Quack', a Welsh made children's cartoon that was evidently created by David Jason's late partner? Pussy Cat Willum, Robin and Rosy, Bagpuss, and the lovely Trumpton characters. Gentle and happy memories of sitting with the children, watching the programmes - I ache for those days, sometimes.

Earthmother9 Wed 12-Mar-25 16:44:13

My Son loved "Evil Edna", there was one other but I've forgotten what it was.

Shinamae Wed 12-Mar-25 17:22:53

Sarnia

Now this is going back. Anyone else remember Prudence Kitten? We didn't have a TV at home but my grandparents did and I was enthralled with Prudence. I think she had an Uncle who was a sailor. Or am I muddling that up? I was around 5 at the time.
Lovely post awakening some happy memories.

Yes, I remember prudence kitten and rag tag and bobtail….😁

Musicgirl Wed 12-Mar-25 17:31:29

I loved Trumpton, Camberwick Green and Chigley, narrated by the incomparable Brian Cant, as a small child. They were, believe, the first children's programmes made in colour, although colour TV was many years into the future for most of us as it was so expensive. I would have been one of the first viewers of these programmes in the late sixties. I also liked Bizzy Lizzy with her dress with the magic flower, The Pogles of Pogle's Wood and The Herbs, with Parsley the Lion et al. Delightful programmes.

Shelflife Wed 12-Mar-25 17:37:12

I lived them all especially Trumpton and Mr Ben . As a child ' Listen with Mother ' on the radio.
One programme I don't like that is for today's children is The Midnight Garden. It's a bit creepy!

Lindylou23 Wed 12-Mar-25 18:13:35

My father in law s name was Hugh Pugh, long time ago.

Churchview Wed 12-Mar-25 18:19:27

Pogle's Wood, Bizzy Lizzy and Mary, Mungo and Midge come to mind.

I still envy Bizzy Lizzy the flower on her dress which made wishes come true.

Churchview Wed 12-Mar-25 18:20:35

Musicgirl Sorry, a bit of a cross post there. Lovely to know other people still remember these shows too.

Churchview Wed 12-Mar-25 18:24:26

My husband has just reminded me that his friend went on Mastermind with Trumpton as his specialist subject. I promise he isn't making it up.
