I haven’t watched Coronation Street for many years but when I did Julie Goodyear was a constant presence with her animal prints and all her make up.
Yesterday there were photographs of her in the media on her 83rd birthday.
She has Alzheimer’s and her H put the photos on to mark the day.
It was, to me, the cruellest gesture possible.
She looked absolutely dreadful.
No front teeth and so very old looking.
If my H had done anything similar I would have been devastated, fortunately she will probably never know.
It was not the act of a loving husband however he meant it to appear.

Very cruel and totally wrong.

I don’t think anyone is offended by the photo it’s just we wonder if she would have wanted it, and I know my family would never do this to me, I still think he did it for the money no loving husband would do that surely, the first thing my husband said was he could never do that to me

.

They've been married for 18-years and had just returned from a glorious birthday out and looks wonderfully happy (even without most of her teeth).

It's their 'now' and their 'normal'. She is no longer young and wearing leopard-skin minis and leggings. Get over it.

The fact that many seem to think that she should be locked away in a darkened room, says more about them than it does about Julie's husband.
.

It’s not a question of her ‘being locked away in a darkened room’.
It’s a question of protecting her dignity - what little of it is left for anyone in the later stages of dementia.

I have never watched and never will Coronation Street.

Last year Julie was pictured looking her lovely self, it's devastating what dementia can do to people. ☹
Someone seeing a loved one with dementia every day will accept or not notice the change.

Just July last year:

Her photographs , yes and the one without dentures , are on Instagram and TikTok,

I felt exactly the same. I think that for people who loved her in Corrie, and remembered her as she was then, this photo was a shock. I know these things happen, people get old and ill, but I don’t think proud, fashion-loving Julie would be happy with this photo being shown. It may have been unintentional (I hope) but her husband has really let her down by showing this photo and I sincerely hope she never sees it.

And we need to know that, do we? You think anyone cares? Your comment was totally inappropriate for this article. Quite usual for you, as you are known for these remarks which help no-one. Where is your compassion?

DeeDe Fri 04-Apr-25 23:25:58

Don’t know if photo will show on here, but think this is what’s being referred too…

Well said! I made a similar comment before I saw yours. Some people have no compassion or sense of occasion.

A vile act on the part of her husband. Was it an act of revenge for a past argument and he's holding a grudge? Or did a media outlet offer him a fat cheque?

I think you are being a little harsh. I didn’t get the impression her husband posted it for revenge (what gave you that idea? I’d be interested to know).
I thought he posted it to let Julie’s loving fans know the situation. He is probably going through hell.
Please be kind.

Married for 18 years , she was diagnosed in 2023, big change in
their lives, no more public appearances of retired of tv actress, does he miss this

BlueBelle Sat 05-Apr-25 06:14:51

Why are we so ashamed of old age and what life brings us
Why should we hide imperfections away I thought with brave people like Katie Piper we had got beyond that, but obviously not
Your post is just horrible Mae13 and full of your made up suppositions
This lady radiates happiness, it’s the same BIG smile that she always had
He has posted fb photos every birthday as far as I see why should this be different just because she obviously ‘won’t wear’ her dentures
But it is her as she is NOW
It’s raw but it’s real she’s alive and obviously happy what more can anyone ask for
The people who find this offensive are the ones with the problem not our Julie
It’s REAL life

NotSpaghetti Sat 05-Apr-25 07:45:03

I understood that her immediate family were all OK with it.

I think she looks very happy.
To me, that is important- the other stuff (her teeth/makeup etc) are irrelevant.

My mother passed Away last July of dementia and we told all family no pictures of mam were to be posted on social media as it’s just not respectful at all when someone is that ill . That picture of Julie saddens me

THIS, entirely.

Allsorts Sat 05-Apr-25 08:00:44

To show how dementia takes all your dignity and the essence of you away is not helping anyone recently diagnosed. Surely being pictured with no teeth, in looking wild would scare you more. If it were me I would want to keep my dignity, rather be dead than shown like that, unfortunately when you are diagnosed it's too late to do anything about it.

Anniebach Sat 05-Apr-25 08:02:01

Illness is real life, being paraded on social media is not part of my real life

No, it wouldn't be mine either, but for some people, it is. At the end of the day, she looks happy and well cared for, and he clearly loves and cares for her a great deal - and that is what is most important.

BlueBelle Sat 05-Apr-25 08:31:32

He’s put a pic up of her every year and do you know something having nursed a precious Mum and my Nan who lived with me for three years with dementia I would have done anything to see that smile on their face teeth or no teeth they were unhappy, confused, tearful rarely saw a big smile or a sign of happiness, just confusion and sorrow
There’s so much more to life than we see, faces don’t need make up or teeth to see wisdom, happiness, and joy
When I first started being interested in art as a very young teenager my favourite picture of all time was a portrait of a old Greek lady with no teeth and so many lines on her faces you could barely see the skin between, but it reminded me of a life lived, a life of experiences of joy and sorrow a full life probably a lot of hardship but a life
Will anyone find that depth in the Turkey teeth and lip fillers of today
Give me Julie s fun filled portrait any day

ViceVersa Sat 05-Apr-25 09:26:29

Well said, BlueBelle!

Anniebach Sat 05-Apr-25 09:33:15

Why does it have to be Turkey teeth or no teeth, this thread since the photograph was included in very upsetting

ViceVersa Sat 05-Apr-25 09:39:20

The photograph has been widely available on various media and websites. Sharing it on here isn't going to make much difference.

twinnytwin Sat 05-Apr-25 10:15:58

I think it's a brilliant, truthful photograph of Julie. She looks so happy and if her family aren't bothered about her being seen minus her dentures, why should others who are strangers to her?
I have many photos of my Mum, who suffered from dementia, surrounded by her great-grandchildren and grandchildren. She is hardly recognisable due to losing so much weight (no interest in eating) and refusing to wear her dentures. But the photos show her pleasure in the company of family and now that she's died, they remind us all of happy times.

Parsley3 Sat 05-Apr-25 10:31:02

The photo wasn't for the fans who remember her leopard print days, it was for her family. It was posted by her partner of 30 years who knows her as she is now and it is infair to suggest that he is "parading" her on social media. The glamorous barmaid was a part she played for the public. The photo is the real Julie and her husband is not ashamed of that. Good for him.
