am so glad not the only one disturbed by this. give an update on how she is but to post such an unflattering photo really was not a nice thing to do. Everyone remembers Julie as the ever present Bet Lynch, those should be the memories people have. As has been said at least she will be unaware.

She was looking quite cheerful. We might be well advised to mind our own business.

The photograph showed Julie at home after they spent the day out together as Scott, 55, shared a new update with her fans, friends and family online.

However, the image was not well received by everyone, as Scott was hit by backlash from some who believed the photo was too personal to share given that her appearance has changed so dramatically in recent years.

But not everyone shared the same opinion, as many wished Julie well and thanked Scott for sharing the heartwarming update.

Scott, who gave up his career to be Julie's full time carer, has looked after the former Coronation Street star since her diagnosis."

I remember a photo of Prunella Scales who also suffers with dementia. She looked beautiful. Her husband Timothy West always made sure she looked how she would have
wanted to look had she been able to dress and do her own hair and make-up. Such a kind husband I thought. A tragic loss for her.

What career did the husband give up ? all I have read is ‘gave up work’.
Much stress for them, she had to sell her house last year

I thought it was an act of cruelty too. If anyone did this to me I’d be completely devastated. I’m sure if she was able to understand what he did she’d be horrified. I personally hate having my photo taken, even with my makeup on, teeth in and hair done.

I thought it was awful and don’t know why he did it. I didn’t think she looked happy.

Dreadful for her dignity. She was always my corrie favourite.

They've been married for 18-years and had just returned from a glorious birthday out and looks wonderfully happy (even without most of her teeth).

It's their 'now' and their 'normal'. She is no longer young and wearing leopard-skin minis and leggings. Get over it.

The fact that many seem to think that she should be locked away in a darkened room, says more about them than it does about Julie's husband.

I've not seen the photo but maybe it was to prove she was still alive as I honestly thought she was dead.
is this the issue with people not wanting to show old age ?

i know my brother took photos of my mom when in a nursing home and he was ok with those but I wasn't . not an act of cruelty but just acknowledging that the mother he adored was still alive .

Less than 20 years of marriage and Julie was diagnosed with dementia. Her husband has cared for and looked after her since the diagnosis, why shouldn't he post photos of her when they are celebrating anniverseries/birthdays etc. She has changed like we all do and he posted a photo of his wife as many people do. I don't think we should judge him for doing what lots of other people do.

I totally agree. All of us, would like people to remember us looking at our best, not vulnerable and ravaged by illness. She was a proud, loud, northern lady, full of glamour she would absolutely hate this picture to be plastered all over the news and social media.
I do NOT agree for one second that it served to 'raise the awareness of dementia'.......how would anyone want to a/ be reminded that this is how a loved one 'might' look in the future, and b/ you must be living under a rock if you don't 'know' what dementia is by now. There is NO justification whatsoever for the picture.
Bizarrely, he supposedly did 'delete' the picture because of a backlash, however, the media simply used the same picture all over again, with the 'backlash' headline.
No true loving family or relatives would have agreed to this, and HE would have received a substantial payment for it, it's click bait for the newspaper. Disgraceful.

I saw this photo - only after all the publicity - I honestly liked the joy so obvious on her face.

Yes, she looked quite old - but it was a photo of happiness and love.

I loved that she looked so happy , was sad to see the ravages of her illness , but she was obviously well cared for

Would anyone really choose a photograph without their dentures and share it on Facebook , my concern now is someone will do the same

Do the same? Do the same to who?

What makes me so very uncomfortable about all of this is that to dislike the photo you would have to be a person who judges another on physical appearance. To me she looked beautiful and it is rather saddening that others would judge so harshly.

My concern would be, how would the person - her pre dementia self - have felt about it? Would she have minded, would she have been mortified?

I certainly put off a relative or two who wanted to visit my mother during the later, pitiful stages of dementia. They’d never been close anyway and I knew her former self would absolutely have hated for them to see her like that.

So I told them that she wouldn’t recognise them (probably true) and that seeing strangers would agitate her. (A blatant lie!).

I'm really wondering what's driving the ideas of the many people who were 'offended' in some way or other by this photograph.

I’m not offended - I just wonder if Julie would have wanted it, and we don’t know either way.
DH says he wouldn’t do that to me and I’m grateful.

I am not offended , it isn’t obscene, against the law, an attempt to be amusing, so why would I be offended

I’ve just looked at the photo, and TBH I can’t imagine ANYBODY’S former self being happy with that sort of photo being publicised!

I am not offended, people are assigning some completely incorrect motives to those raising concerns. I have spent my life working with people with learning disabilities, many of whom have difficulties giving consent, I talk about this sort of stuff every day of my life.
