It maybe a tad pedantic to mention but
Shouldn't this discussion be in
Pedants Corner ??

Being even more pedantic, the thread is about overuse not misuse. Although the two do, of course, overlap at the end of the day, in the fullness of time and should finally be put to bed at the nail biting finish having had their work cut out .

*Some of my least favourite, overused cliches.

What does that even mean? Why the “even”? Another Americanism I suspect.

Fresh, as in fabric conditioner or air “freshener”. Take note Lenor - whoosh of freshness - no way, all artificial.

"To be fair..."
"In fairness..."
"Gives me the ick"
"Delish!"

mabon1 Tue 13-May-25 13:51:30

Starting the answer to a question with "so".

‘Incredibly’ was hammered to death by the last govt - ‘we are working incredibly hard to …’ whatever thé flavour of the day was.

On the subject of adverts; I hate the, over used, expression 'full of goodness'. As opposed to what, full of evil?

I sympathise hollysteers every time I post anything on GN I feel as though I am putting my head on a block, to quote yet another cliche.

MickyD Tue 13-May-25 14:57:08

Oh me too. How is “absolutely “ beneficial to any conversation ?!?

Also “yeah, yeah, yeah” (very quickly) after the other person’s sentence. Grrr 😃

Camry1952 Tue 13-May-25 15:11:23

When people comment about a post and say "cuteness overload". Usually it's one after another making the comment on the same post.

Maggiemaybe Tue 13-May-25 15:14:34

That’s a really good question!

Said by every interviewee desperately trying to think of a way to wriggle out of answering it.

Nanny27 Tue 13-May-25 15:20:59

Enough already. So so hate this phrase.

Sanmrbro Tue 13-May-25 15:21:23

“Statement” as in “statement piece or necklace” (What IS the blimmin’ statement?)

Curated

Every time there is a totally preventable crisis of some sort - "We take (our customers welfare) very seriously"
Yeah, right...

Moggycuddler Tue 13-May-25 16:07:08

Honestly. As in "Honestly, I was really angry!" And "Honestly, I can't stand red jumpers!" Does this mean that generally everything you usually say is a lie then?
