My top three are;

Amazing.

Toxic.

Emotional.

Dislike all of the above but the newest that makes me grit my teeth is, “when time do you want us to rock up?” Especially when said by a seventy plus person. Ugh!!!

😂

Or worse still, ledge. You can be a ledge these days if you manage to put your shoes on the right feet without help.

One that irritates me is ‘purchased’ when talking about buying something small. A house purchase is one thing, but ‘I purchased a bag of crisps’ sounds pompous. I don’t know why I find it annoying, but it grates on me.

I dislike people asking me to "confirm" my name/d.o.b/address.

Logically, I can't confirm anything if you don't give me the info first.

I'm there for you. Where?
I'm always right behind you. Creepy!
We are are all rooting (or is it routing) for you. How exactly does one root (or is it route)?

Grammaretto Thu 15-May-25 11:11:48

Yes NotSpaghetti. Here a common question at the doctor or optician is "what's your name again?" When you haven't told them your name.

As for rooting Magenta a question for Susie Dent methinks.

NotSpaghetti Thu 15-May-25 12:09:16

Is that a local thing Grammaretto?
Do you think they are trying to be friendly by implying they have forgotten - so the "again" is referring to the first time you told them - maybe 10 years ago??
grin

Magenta8 Thu 15-May-25 12:11:50

Grammaretto I have just found out what rooting means in Australia.blush

NotSpaghetti Thu 15-May-25 12:17:16

Breast fed babies root for their mother's nipple. Mine would snuggle their little faces into your chest with their mouth open... presumably bottle fed babies do something similar.

I've heard it used here and then when I had my second baby in America.

Scribbles Thu 15-May-25 18:14:44

Grammaretto, it's even more un-nerving to be asked, "what was your name again?"
I checked my pulse to make certain I'm still alive. 😀

Grammaretto Thu 15-May-25 18:36:56

Actually Scribbles that is the expression. Past tense 😬

Fidelity2 Thu 15-May-25 23:45:08

Thank goodness for that.

Doodledog “Purchase” is pompous for small items you have bought.

Here is mine: Grrr 🦁 it is “host” as in we/they will be hosting Christmas 🤶🏻 …..(sorry to mention that in May) whereas in a previous life they would just have people/family over for the festive knees up!

Grammaretto Fri 16-May-25 08:43:58

"I'm good thanks" in reply to "how are you?".
Maybe it's the new fine, or worse, wicked.

Bellanonna Fri 16-May-25 10:55:55

Checkout staff exhorting me to have a nice day when it might be mid afternoon. I always feel obliged to reply “you, too” which is a bit silly when they’re working. Less common, but I do still get told “see ya later”, mainly by the very young.

Granmarderby10 Fri 16-May-25 11:52:17

I more often get told to enjoy the rest of your day …and that’s an order !😀

I always just say ‘thanks’ in reply.
As for ‘See you later’ 😄are you tempted to say ‘not if I see you first’ then leave them to work that one out.

Ooooo what a giveaway about myself.....
I always thought of myself as a reasonably kind , even nice , person, but perhaps not.............

Floradora9 Fri 16-May-25 21:34:46

I hate adds on Facebook that say " needs gone " to-day . Horrible .

4xGranny Fri 16-May-25 22:06:18

I hate it when waiters/waitresses/bar staff refer to my husband and I as ‘guys’.
What happened to sir or madam?

specki4eyes Thu 22-May-25 16:53:53

"Passed" when someone dies. Grr!
"Bless ....him/her"
My elder son says these all the time and takes offence when I cringe.

specki4eyes Thu 22-May-25 16:55:25

"A brew" as they brandish a tea bag or a jar of instant coffee!
