Dinner Plates

My darling Retriever decided to help unstack the dishwasher. He managed to pull out the entire of the bottom drawer, resulting in most of my plates being smashed to smithereens (he didn't even look a bit apologetic!). Fortunately they were only the kitchen numbers but hand painted and quite pretty.

Anyway, I bought a job lot from Tesco which suffice. It did not really register at the time but the diameter is 3 cms more than the original plates at 29 cms. I only discovered this week that they are too tall for the bottom rack of the dishwasher (which would explain why things were not coming out particularly sparkling). It is a fairly standard, full size, not very old Bosch. I shall try and find the instructions but I believe that the top shelf can be moved up a notch. However, if I do this stemmed wine glasses will not fit in.

I must have wasted about six hours trawling the internet for some fun, 25cm, kitchen dinner plates. I do not want any bowls, mugs or side plates - just dinner plates and, no, I am not paying £25 each for something which will be thrown into the kitchen cupboard and probably end up in the dog basket for lickies!!

All the plates which I have seen are between 27 and 29 cms. Who decided that this huge size should be the new norm?

No, trying to serve meat and two veg on a side plate does not work, it ends up on the tablecloth!! Much as I would love to scour second-hand shops, mobility precludes this. Anyway a lot of the older stuff has bits of gold or silver on it.

I am quite happy to buy "seconds" but I don't know where to go. Any bright ideas please?

If you know you want an exa t size why not look on a second hand site and see what you like.

You might find a set and if not you will at least have an idea what brands to look at.

This is an individual plate search - but you may even find a set?

We bought lots of Rosenthal from TKMaxx.
They may also be worth a look?

Dessert plates are smaller than dinner plates but bigger than side plates. Try putting that on an eBay search.

I've bought second china from eBay including extra dinner plates for the set we were given in 1970s. All reasonably priced and you have the satisfaction of knowing you are being eco-friendly

Robert Dyas have a huge range of plates. I only found one sort that were 25cm and they were white glass but they have others that are smaller than 29cms. Their online store might be worth a look.

Dunelm are quite good but we have Denby seconds in the kitchen - they are available on line i think.

A search online (for 10 inch dinner plates, or for 25 cm dinner plates) ) brought up Amazon pages with lots.

We have the same problem.

We lifted the top tray by one notch, and now have to put the wine glasses in at an angle, all come out clean.

We, too, have Denby ware seconds in the kitchen.(pattern:Cotswold). Most bought 50 years ago and topped up whenever I have seen any in charity shops.

I feel your pain. My Retriever almost gets in the dishwasher to do the pre wash. Good job the cycle I put on sterilises everything.
Good luck!

I thought that the bottom rack of my dishwasher wouldn’t take my dinner plates and then asked the man that does work on my house if it was adjustable ( he can turn his hand to anything) and he just adjusted it! On the downside, having decided to use it more often, I find that it doesn’t eg clean mugs properly and I end up scrubbing them. I don’t know if I’m doing something wrong or if it’s just a very bad dishwasher ( it is quite old),

NotSpaghetti Mon 16-Jun-25 15:31:55

MayBee70 I'm assuming you have been regularly using a dishwasher cleaner?

Casdon Mon 16-Jun-25 17:21:26

I’ve got Denby (Imperial Blue) too, but it doesn’t meet your requirements OP, the dinner plates are too big, and the next size down, which we call breakfast plates, are too small, neither of them are near 25cm. I think all Denby plates are standard sizes, so whichever range you had it would be the same. On the plus side though, if the did fit your dishwasher, I doubt if your dog would be able to smash them, they are very durable.

A factory outlet if you have one near you?

I haven’t. I’ve never really used a dishwasher much. Tend to just use it to put things in when I’ve washed them. Then, if I do put dirty dishes in occasionally I tend to rinse everything first! I hate stains in mugs and scrub them with dish soap most of the time. Wonder if the tablets I use aren’t very good? I do need to start using it more.

NotSpaghetti Mon 16-Jun-25 17:36:45

My son didn't even realise you needed to clean the filter out!

He was all for getting a new washer till he cleaned that and then ran a cleaning cycle with a dishwasher cleaner.

My mother-in-law sometimes has stained china.
I think it's because she never runs a full hot cycle as she thinks she only needs a "quick wash" because she rinses everything first.

I put everything in just as it is but do run a full cycle.

I'd definitely try cleaning and running hot first before you look for a replacement

I was running a little low on dinner plates. I didn’t want to pay over the odds and had a look in Asda. I was surprised to see these 25cm dinner plates were just 85p each. Plain white and dishwasher and microwave safe. I bought 4 last week and they were in use over the weekend when the family were here and they’re absolutely fine .

I too had the imperial blue. I broke my hand in five places, after that, far too heavy to lift. Sold on eBay for more than I paid originally.

We don't usually have a problem cleaning cups and mugs in the dishwasher but for some reason a few weeks ago took one mug out and it had a coffee ring around the top. No idea why or how. Stuck a Milton tablet in it and left it for a few hours and the ring came off. Hasn't happened since.

I use pasta dishes from Sainsbury's to eat off. I have to use a spoon and fork to eat my hands shake and due to my disability I drop food down me . I find the pasta dish keeps the food in one place . I have dinner plates I had from Sainsbury's they fit on the bottom shelf of my slimline Bosch dishwasher. Visitors use them .

I had a my fist dishwasher in 2019 and put glasses in but not happy how they came out . Then I had to give them up because I broke most of them. And had plastic ones off Etsy . Which I hand wash .

I just measured my Corelle plates which are 26 cm. Is this brand available in UK? Nearly impossible to break.
