Paul McCartney is 83 today. Where on earth did that time go?

Sparklefizz Wed 18-Jun-25 18:38:37

I saw The Beatles at Tooting (London) Granada in 1963 aged 15 on a coach trip with the youth club. They were 2nd on the bill supporting Roy Orbison who was top.

It was impossible to hear The Beatles because of all the screaming, but when Roy Orbison came on there was complete silence while he sat on a high stool and just sang.

I saw that tour Sparklefizz. By the time it came to Birmingham, The Beatles were co-headlining and closed the show rather than Roy.

Never went after the Beatles I was a Stones gal and you just couldn’t be both

Sparklefizz Wed 18-Jun-25 19:11:40

It was brilliant wasn't it?

When I left home, my Dad wanted to keep all my Beatles records as he'd grown to enjoy them - no way was he holding on to them!! angry

Kate1949 Wed 18-Jun-25 19:23:18

Oh yes that concert was great, especially as we didn't have tickets and a roadie sneaked us in and George came to speak to us through a window. I was in heaven. That's another (long) story in my Beatles escapades.

Indeed they are, kittylester, and still touring. I think that it was the foundation that I was thinking of: Dolly, of course, has a legacy of many good things done in her name.

kittylester Wed 18-Jun-25 19:41:42

I love Dolly, too. Her concerts are brilliant.

Not only did Paul fund LIPA performing school in Liverpool, but a Linda McCartney treatment centre at the Royal Liverpool Hospital where I had excellent care myself. A good man.

I used to see Lennon in Matthew Street and then when fame struck just after in Liverpool. McCartney’s brother Mike wanted to take me home one night at a club, but I declined 😁
Always play Beatles when feeling down.

My father worked for EMI records and bumped into the Beatles quite a few times in the early day. He always refused to get their autographs for me because "I don't do things like that"

Sara1954 Wed 18-Jun-25 21:33:51

I suppose I’ve missed my chance now, but I still think he’s wonderful, I was completely obsessed, madly in love, I was too young to see them, but my walls were plastered with the full page pictures inside Jackie

So I wish him the happiest of birthdays, and many, many more.

Kate1949 Wed 18-Jun-25 22:36:12

I think he's wonderful too Sara although it was always George for me. What pleasure those lovely boys gave to the world. My blood boils when I hear people say Paul should stop performing, I feel like saying 'Why should he and what have you given to the world pray?'

Etoile2701 Thu 19-Jun-25 13:38:58

I can remember when he had his 21st birthday 🎂

I adored the Beatles, especially Paul.

Some years ago I went to see the Bootleg Beatles. Instead of clapping and cheering when they first appeared on the stage we all sat there completely stunned. They looked so much like the real thing it stunned us all. It was a fabulous evening.

It's a big regret for me that I never saw the Beatles live.

Stansgran Thu 19-Jun-25 13:50:28

@ hollysteers. Mike McGear was the last person I saw outside Lime Street Station when I left Liverpool to come North. The Beatles were my youth really.

keepingquiet Thu 19-Jun-25 13:52:23

I am in awe of Paul McCartney. Seeing him with Springsteen in Liverpool (albeit on my screen) was so inspiring!

There will never be their like again. What a time to grow-up, listening to such great music for my whole lifetime!

Happy birthday Paul!

RobertaDanversWalker Thu 19-Jun-25 13:52:30

Funnily enough I'm blasting 'Rubber Soul' out and then opened Gransnet to find this thread.

Kate1949 Thu 19-Jun-25 14:07:09

I agree re The Bootlegs albertina. We saw them last year. They were brilliant. 'George' even sat on the floor and played the sitar wonderfully

I was lucky enough to see The Beatles live a few times. I have bored on here many times about it and the fact that I have a picture of myself sitting behind them on stage with a few other people. They became a big part of my life giving me something nice with my chaotic home life.

Nanny27 Thu 19-Jun-25 14:11:40

Paul McCartney was a neighbour of my parents. A nice man who always had time to stop and chat.

I loved The Beatles especially Paul 🥰 saw them several times at local venues just as they were becoming famous. Days I will never forget. One of my sons who was born mid 70’s has to be one of their biggest fans he’s absolutely obsessed think I can take some credit for that 🤣!

Les1950 Thu 19-Jun-25 16:31:41

I was big fan of the Beatles, but unfortunately never saw them in concert. There were 4 of us at school, who all liked a different Beatle. Paul was my favourite. I bought all the Beatle monthly mags out of my paper round money. Wish I still had them!

mancgirl Thu 19-Jun-25 16:36:23

My son got us tickets to see Paul in Manchester in December. He was amazing! Nearly 3 fab hours without a break. The Beatles were the soundtrack to my life- and his - he had no choice grin

mancgirl Thu 19-Jun-25 16:37:44

Les50 still got a pile of Beatles monthly magazines!

Patsy70 Thu 19-Jun-25 16:52:31

I’ve just heard that the ‘Paul McCartney’ in the tribute band, Bootleg Beatles, is leaving after 10 years. He was excellent! They are recruiting for his replacement. Maybe Sir Paul will apply! 😉

Susieq62 Thu 19-Jun-25 22:15:43

I saw The Beatles at the Brighton hippodrome in 1963 and I was 13.
My daughter did a two week stint at LIPA and met Sir Paul who was lovely.

Patsy70 Thu 19-Jun-25 22:44:08

Would really recommend that you see the Bootleg Beatles - they are brilliant.
