Been into a few Wetherspoons in last few weeks,
I asked about why no steak meals on the menu
They said its because some customers were returning their steak meals either under cooked or over cooked.
Its all about how you define Medium well done or rare.
Like the saying goes.one mans meat is another mans poison

Do you have shares in Wetherspoons Infoman ?

Fairly widely reported earlier this year in MSM that they were discontinuing steak, gammon and mixed grill as they weren't profitable.

Which sounds like a much more credible explanation

Really?

Just imagine being the chef,
and being requested to put a half eaten steak back in the grill to grill it some more, with other steaks still to be grilled.

WETHERSPOONS are cutting steak, mixed grills and gammon from menus across the country in a cost-cutting shake-up. The pub chain's top brass John Huston told staff on Friday that the popular dishes would be disappearing in May after an increase in meat costs made them the company's “biggest loss-makers”.15 Mar 2025

Someone has been having you on OP grin

Cost?

I think I will stick with my original statement about steaks being returned for extra grilling.
All costs have risen and we bought two fish and chip lots last week.
Handed over a twenty pound note, and expected to get at least one five note back in change.
Nope, just handful of shrapnel.

Usedtobeblonde Sat 21-Jun-25 09:19:22

In our local eating places you would have to hand over two twenty pound notes for fish and chips and be lucky to get a fiver back.
Sausage and mash? £15:95.
Eating out is getting very expensive.
My last trip to Wetherspoons, at least two years ago, probably more, was really bad, very cheap but put me off going again.

A steak meal is now about £30 when eating out. All eating out is expensive these days - rising costs everywhere - even Italian where a pasta or pizza meal was low priced. We like to eat out as an extended family but as the bill is around £250 for 9 of us it is getting a bit ridiculous.
Our local pub has to offer a %20 off mains every few weeks - probably just to survive.

If the top brass of Wetherspoons says it’s down to cost - might he not know best, infoman ?
Or is this another case of never letting the facts get in the way of a good (?) story?

It's Wetherspoons. If you order a steak it's not going to be cooked by Marco Pierre White. My husband has had steak in Spoons in the past and enjoyed it and he is a bit of a fusspot with steak.

I once had a mixed grill in the WS in central London.
I complained to the waiter that the meat was tuff. Out came the chef, took my knife & fork off me & proceeded to cut my meat up, to show me, waving it under my nose, like I was a kid, how tender it was- I got my money back after he struggled to cut through a tough piece 🙄

Shinamae Sat 21-Jun-25 10:19:41

I very rarely eat out now, maybe twice a year as the cost is just so prohibitive and the quality of food especially in Wetherspoons is not good
I don’t find Wetherspoons cheap anymore. It used to be but not anymore….
I do still have my coffee in Wetherspoons as I think that is good value

OldFrill Sat 21-Jun-25 10:26:35

Restaurant prices have increased due to general supply and running cost rises, increase in minimum wage and NI contributions. Wetherspoons have been trying to get there profits back to pre-covid levels. Steak, mixed grill and gammon don't make enough profit, possibly as they had to actually grill it rather than zap it (I'm not sure they grilled anything).

Kate1949 Sat 21-Jun-25 10:36:08

Wetherspoons is very cheap. Yesterday I had small fish, chips and peas, my husband had a chicken and salad wrap. He had a pint of beer and I had a large glass of Pinot Grigio. It came to £18 something. I call that cheap.

Kate1949 Sat 21-Jun-25 10:37:13

The fish was lovely white cod.

OldFrill Sat 21-Jun-25 11:40:47

Prices vary depending on location

We rarely eat out now. When I can buy a pack of two fillet steaks from Aldi for £12.49 which have been delicious, why would we pay the eye-watering prices they're asking in restaurants?
So what's on the menu at 'Spoons now? Chicken with everything and burgers?

Just imagine being in charge of overall profitability and having to justify buying in expensive steak for people who were there for an inexpensive meal.

Well if course it is cheaper to eat at home sassenach, restaurant's, overheads, staff, rent, business taxes together are probably higher than the food costs. Home cooked food tastes nice but you have to cook it! The joy of eating out for me is no cooking, pleasant surrounding and food different from my repertoire. We do not do it often but I always enjoy it. O e thing that puzzles me, the veggie dish is often my choice but the lack of expensive meat does not seem to make the price a cheaper option.

Kate1949 Sat 21-Jun-25 12:53:11

sassenach No Wetherspoons is not all chicken and burgers. They have curries, fish, salads, pasta, steak and ale pudding, pizzas, jacket potatoes, paninis. A good variety.

OldFrill Sat 21-Jun-25 13:02:09

My nearest Wetherspoons is a lifeline for lonely folk. Refillable coffee/tea/chocolate for £1.71, warm heating, pleasant staff, loos foc. It's busy weekdays with aged local folk and coach trippers.
Mainly why l avoid it.
