Who remembers?
I have just had a notion to get one for my daughter who loves vintage.
I am looking online for a white one

There are lots available on eBay - different colours too.

I remember them well and loved them. I’m sure I still have one somewhere - couldn’t bear to throw it away ..

I love them. I would stay weekends with my grandparents and they had gorgeous ones on my bed. Happy memories.

I remember them too, I don't have them now but what I do have looks very similar, I bought 2 throws from Dunelm they cost about £16 have them in different colours and fits a double bed.

Try looking for chenille bedspread or coverlet. I think that's what we called them. And when making the bed, you covered the pillow and made a nice karate chop to tuck the bedspread neatly under the pillow. My sister and I had pink ones, and do you remember the stuffed animals with a zipper to hold your nightie? Mine was a poodle.

I can’t remember us ever having candlewick, but I do remember a sort of satiny type of material in green as a throw and on top of that was an eiderdown in the same material.

After that we (sisters) had some brightly coloured blankets as throws. Bedspreads they were called.

I’d forgotten those! My sister and I loved ours when we were teens.

Years before, hard times when we were kids, cold bedrooms in a big rented Old Trafford house, we piled coats on our beds in the winter…. 🤫

I have a big white one still for a double bed - and two red singles.
My daughter took the lilac and pale blue ones when her boys were little.
All inherited.

I have seen them in a charity shop recently though. You could ring round.
They do wash really well too!

I've got a white candlewick bedspread (stored not in use). It's got pink & green decoration on it though.
I'll put it on eBay once the builders have finished building & I've finished decorating. Think they are more popular again now.

We had a fitted one for a double bed in lemon and white with flowers!!

Redrobin51 Tue 08-Jul-25 21:18:26

Mine was a lovely lemon colour with some pretty flowers on it and was the only lovely thing in my room. Even when we got married I had it on the spare bed until it was literally worn out. My parents double was a soft pink.

Mine was purple. Then went to quilted nylon ones from Brentford Nylons, they were orange! Must gave been late 60s/early 70s.

I had a lovely white one with pink and green flowers. I wonder what happened to it........

Coops74 Tue 08-Jul-25 22:47:49

I had a orange one plus a eiderdown and loads of blankets.

There's someone on Vinted selling dresses she's made from candlewick bedspreads.

LadyGracie Tue 08-Jul-25 22:53:10

I have one, it was my mothers, still white with delicate flowers, very pretty.

Beechnut Tue 08-Jul-25 23:42:01

My auntie gave us a pink one for a wedding present.

JackyB Wed 09-Jul-25 07:51:07

I think mine was pink. I remember pulling the tufts out when I was bored (or supposed to be doing hkmework)

Sago Wed 09-Jul-25 07:55:29

I had one as a child, I used to pull the little wicks through, roll them into little balls and flick them out of my bedroom window.

Always had them when I was young and now I have one that I found when clearing my parents house, my OH uses it on his bed.
I also remember having a candlewick dressing gown back in the 70s. Kaftan style with a zip up the front.

I remember my parents having a white one with dusky pink flowers worked into the centre. Mum used to chunter about the weight of it when she washed it……..twin tub washing machine…… but the image of it on their bed is so comforting.
We children never had one though……we had eiderdowns that slipped off during the night and were stuffed with feathers that used to poke through the satin fabric.

I'm afraid I never liked them. I was and am extremely allergic to them, which probably scarred my memory. To me, they smack of post war utility.

Grandmotherto8 Wed 09-Jul-25 15:00:56

Try Vinted as well.

JakeysGranny Wed 09-Jul-25 15:06:47

I inherited one from my grandmother 41 years ago. It’s a fitted double, white with pink flowers and green leaves, I used it on the spare bed for a while when my daughter stayed as she loves vintage stuff. I’ll have to wash it and see about using it again, it’s been in the loft since we moved house 7 years ago!
