‘Seventy-five, and everyone says I’m wonderful!’

No, not me! (I’m just a bit over) but I recently remembered a neighbour of a granny saying this every time we saw her! This would have been in the 60s.

I don’t think 75 was a very great age even then - both GMs lived well into their 80s, and my lovely GGF well into his 90s.

But I can’t help thinking that hardly anyone would talk like this now about their age, or would they?

BTW I don’t think the neighbour had dementia, there was no talk of her ‘not being quite right in the head’.

This sounds like Lulu who constantly repeats that she’s 76 as though she’s special. She looks ok but I’ve seen better!

LucyAnna5 Tue 15-Jul-25 11:41:32

I think once you’re 70+, many people think / say to themselves, “Goodness, I’m getting old!”, and others say this to you too. So it’s a frequent conversational piece……. And you might praise yourself, or others might, if you are in reasonable health too?

Lulu should look good. It is apparent that she has had fillers or surgery on her face. However, she does still have a nice slim figure. She was very sprightly when she was singing with Rod Stewart at Glastonbury.

He was also great for 80. I remember him saying years ago that he had always used moisturiser on his face.

After seeing her at Glastonbury, where she kept her sunglasses on, I don’t think she looks good at all and she’s probably spent quite a lot of money on her appearance…

As a child my Granny looked practically decrepit but was only in her 70's. We are fortunate these days to benefit from better medication and healthcare and more awareness of nutrition and exercise. Many of us will have bought our own homes and be mortgage free with disposable income which opens the door to holidays and treats without the worry of paying the bills. I am 78 next birthday and consider my generation have been very fortunate.

I wish I could still bop around like Lulu did.
And Rod!

Personal trainers, massages, etc etc?

I think Rod Stewart looks like the wreck of the Hesperus!

His face is certainly pretty lined, but he’s nimble for 80!

All the slightly decrepit celebs that people say ‘look marvellous for their age’ not only have heaps of work done I suspect but manage to look worse than the rest of us who are the same age.
Mutton dressed as lamb or something like that.

I used to know an old lady when I was a child who was forever fishing for compliments and saying things like ‘the baker said yesterday I have the complexion of a 30 year old’😁 when she was actually as whiskery as a kipper and much the same colour.

Usedtobeblonde Tue 15-Jul-25 12:26:28

Oh goodness I think I am falling into that mindset.
I was 88 on Saturday and I told everyone in Soop’s kitchen.
I must try to curb my enthusiasm. 😉😂

I could do the bopping , just not for as long.
You should have seen me at the Y6 leavers disco. Though I did wonder afterwards if their enthusiasm for getting me to join in was to see how long I’d last.
Imagine putting all that work in because you’re going to appear in public, and knowing all the time that people will be decrying your efforts. 😢

Only one of my GP’s lived to any great age - my GF died at 84 and was still working part time until six weeks before he died. My other GP’s died at 44 (angina) 48 (TB) and 64 (weak heart from rheumatic fever). All would be treatable today, of course.

My dad lived to be 92 and my mum is heading towards 98. She’s rather gleeful that she’s outlived almost everyone she knows, though that includes two of my three siblings.

Blasted fat fingers! It's very ...

I'm 79 and I think I'm aging better than my grandmother who was having everything done for her at this age - I'm not sure she couldn't have done more for herself though! My mother died ay 79 and was very crippled because she refused to have knee replacements and my mother in law embraced old age at 40 after a hysterectomy! I just carry on doing things I've always done. I was quite pleased when a dietician recently said my skin looked far too young for 79, but that's just genetics. My mother always had very good skin it's not thanks to anything I've done.

henetha Tue 15-Jul-25 13:52:22

I'm 87 and very surprised to have lived this long. And in good health apart from a chronic back condition.
I've always used moisturiser, but a few wrinkles are definitely showing now.

Kipper? 🤣🤣🤣

I agree with Sarnia. I think we are a lucky generation. Impossible now to tell someones age. People I meet could be anything from 70 to 80+. We have good affordable skincare products. Medications to treat illnesses which killed our grans. Plenty of choice of clothes.

I remember laughing when leaving a hotel where I had treated my youthful friend to a birthday tea and a woman ahead of us needed help opening the door. My friend stepped in. The woman said thank you dear. Do you know I am 80 today!! Yes me too said my friend? They could not have been 2 more different women. You just cannot tell. Keep as active and as interested/curious as you can be my friend would say.

Ilovecheese Tue 15-Jul-25 14:05:50

I asked my hairdresser if she cut cut my hair "like Lulu" but she didn't know who I meant.

Dee1012 Tue 15-Jul-25 14:06:24

My great grandmother died in her 90's - she had the most beautifully soft skin, as did my grandmother (her daughter) both would always say "Pears and Ponds" as they both used the soap and cream all their lives.

It wasn’t me that said that about Rod!

Well, Oreo, I'm definitely mutton, but don't necessarily want to dress as mutton. Sometimes I wear something a little lamb ( ish).

As I have written n aonther thread, the problem is younger people are still focussed on outdated stereotypes about what anyone should look like at a given age.

I have aged well, but recently to do with legal documents and one or two other things, I have had to say how old I am and each time I get the 'My goodness, I thought you were much younger than that' treatment.

I do not look much younger than my age. There are plenty of nearly 82 year olds who are fit and healthy and looking good, but just say my age and mental pictures of white hair, frailty and a stick immedately come to people's minds. the older we get the more diverse we look. We cannot younger people grasp that concept?
