In the UK it is illegal to treat anyone differently because of their gender, race, religion, age, disability or sexual orientation.

We have just seen someone try to feed fear into this forum by referring to a small group of babies, who happen to have been given the same chosen name, which, it was suggested, means we should fear a growth in a particular religion and race.

Even when this was factually debunked by another member, the rhetoric, used with such ignorance, has been allowed to continue.

So, why do racists find such a comfortable home on GN?

This thread is quite a different one.This thread is about the concerns from just about everyone including our government and all the governments and people in European countries where illegal migration is happening daily.
Saying that those concerns are ‘racist’ is plainly ridiculous .

I think that if we ignore the racist accusation for a bit and look at this from a different angle, we might be able to understand where some posters are coming from.

So let’s start with the less inflammatory concept which is bias.

So bias is generally an inclination for or against something.

We see it everywhere and we are all guilty of it. So it could be partiality against age, race, religion, culture, nationality etc. you name it - there is partiality or bias. Its effect manifests itself in the restrictions of normal opportunities for those against whom we are biased or prejudiced.

So let’s notch this up a bit and look at bias’s sister - discrimination.

So discrimination is the manifestation in behaviour of prejudice. So hostility and injurious treatment is shown against certain groups, which leads to overt displays of racism.

And racism is a form of prejudice when it manifests itself in negative reactions against a particular group, e.g. those of Islamic faith. It is an inclination to accept stereotyping and emotional reaction against groups or individuals.

Racism can be overt or more often covert. But be in no doubt that it exists and many of us are guilty of it to a certain extent.

I won’t now go into why some posts appear racist, I think you can now work that out for yourself.

I can certainly work out why some throw out the racist label right left and centre on forums and I can guess others would agree.
It’s usually done as a last resort when they are feeling narked with another poster and aren’t getting anywhere and have nothing left to say on a subject.
If we stick with the subject matter of illegal entry into the UK and don’t go off into flights of fancy or philosophical discussions of racism prejudice or anything else, it’s plain that people here, people in all other European countries and governments here and in Europe all realise what it’s costing, billions, and furthermore it’s affecting towns and cities and communities.
This isn’t legal migration where we accept people here to do a certain job.
Nor is it racist in any form to object to boatloads arriving illegally every day.
A great number of illegal migrants were from Albania who aren’t a different race.It’s the number of people arriving in this way that’s worrying and the fact that so many are purposely arriving with no documentation.

Oreo your post beat me to it, while I was typing. For example, in these discussions maybe I show preference for one side to receive support more readily than the other. Mainly because historically this was how it was, and huge changes can bring about concern, and for some feel threatening, (though not for me personally). Whether that is latent racism, I don't know, but I would feel the same if a group of green aliens landed in our country, and started draining the coffers. Adapting to that change would take some doing, totally accepting it might be a step too far. I don't yet know. But I know racist inferences are unpleasant and annoying.

I didn’t use virtue signaller😇and I would hope that my use of misplaced do-gooders was all mine own as it hasn’t featured on any threads I’ve come across.
In any case dogooding is generally a nice thing and even when misplaced only implies a certain level of naivety.
Calling posters racists for not liking the influx of undocumented men from around the world coming on small boats from France and having to be house and cared for at great expense is frankly ridiculous.Even the government doesn’t like it.Also it affects social cohesion, housing and more including crime levels.

It was a very "know your place" post which was why I asked when you expected others to obey you.

I’m quite interested in when racism was considered a flight of fancy.

I believe the poster has a lot to say about prejudice, and understands what it is like to be on the receiving end.

Never belittle what for some people is a daily lived experience.

You are muddling the two, and this is when it becomes a real issue.

There is clear evidence of bias on these threads leading undoubtedly to prejudice, and in some cases covert racism.

There is also clear evidence over concern about immigration, the way it is being handled and control.

Don’t mix the two.

But also don’t try to stop people calling this bias/prejudice/racism out when they see it.
