l will apologise in advance for my irritability, which is beginning to show, but I think that everything about the world is so utterly dreadful at the moment, that it is definitely beginning to affect my mood.

I must somehow get a grip but it is difficult.

Well, I suppose we could ask the body responsible for flood management in the U.K. to stop building defences, or maintain existing ones as unnecessary😄.

And tell those suffering from recent catastrophic flooding in Germany. Spain, Italy, USA countries in Africa, Australia etc, that it is nothing new and certainly not getting any worse.

Global warming is a fact, it is happening at an ever increasing rate.

How rude.

Perhaps you didnt realise so many people tried to be helpful to you on this thread?
You threw some of it back in some of their faces.
Not even sure you have even said thanks to anyone.
Oh well.
Lesson learnt.

1st paragraph - you think I would think that? Really?

2nd paragraph - not much better.

3rd paragraph - disputable.
As I wrote above.

Have you looked at the title😄.

I think it's sad if young people are feeling negative too.
Interesting article there PoliticsNerd, and I would add the colossal costs of having little ones at nursery too. DS has two under 3s, and although he and his wife earn well, they have decided not to go on holiday this year at a cost of £5,000, (his wife can only go in school holidays). I see how child care is crippling their finances, so of course the young will feel unhappy without any treats, and holidays are one thing that have always made working people happy.
At least DS and DDiL can look on the bright side because we all live on the Devon coast, and like Taichinan says, there's so much beauty in nature to surround us.

France too WWM3. Not just torrential rain and terrible floods, but hailstorms wiping out entire crops, heatwaves early and late and endless, bitter winds from the east. Gardening has become very challenging.
We have lived in Normandy for 20 years and you could only fail to notice the changes in climate with excessive wishful thinking.
I simply don't understand people who are not concerned for their children and grandchildren.

I think they mention it but are probably too busy working to be involved in discussions like this escaped.

Your comments about the costs of having children is part of why we now have an aging population. I see Labour is having a Pensions Review, looking at the fact that many of the young are not saving enough, and that the expensive pensions of the past, paid in great part by employers, are not available to the young.

If they need to pay more for pensions, pay extortionate proportions of income for child care from a lower salary, while being less able to buy a home as they are snapped up by older buyers as assets, it's no wonder they are fed up. The problem is also that the post-war generations had often not been used to holidays abroad, etc., so that would feel like an improvement, not being able to give your children more than you had feels like a loss.

It is worth remembering that these changes are not just happening here though. Many if not most of the richer countries are in the same situation.

And in Switzerland, landslides all over the Alps, valley after valley, as the permafrost that is holding the moutains together is melting - and tons of rain combining with disastrous effects. Many cities are also currently at max flood risk as rain continues.

Brilliant poem Allira, especially the last line.

Hoping to help by quoting the ancient Persian saying
'This too shall pass'
Just wish it wouldn't take so flippin' long.
Also, if we know about issues/dangers we can chose what we wish to do about it.
Just remember to take time out to re-charge and get better.
Another quote, paraphrased from airline crew, 'See to yourself first'.

T-shirts are available with many different slogans/sayings on them. You might like one of my favourites, which is:
I never dreamed that one day I'd be a grumpy old man, but here I am killing it!

During covid our local news channel used to show local veauty spots accompanied by restful music, just as a short clip everyday. Wouldn't it be lovely if all news channels could show just one short positive story every day, in amongst all the doom and gloom

Gaga0123 Mon 28-Jul-25 14:03:31

It's easy, don't watch any news, I sometimes accidentally hear it on the radio, I don't do social media and only watch things on TV that bring me joy, you can't change anything anyway so what the point. Only feed yourself with good things.

Cambia Mon 28-Jul-25 14:11:04

Turn off the tv, listen less to the news and read books, listen to music and get out in nature.

We walk every morning for half an hour in the countryside and observe the seasons rolling round and nothing much changes. When we are all long gone, the world will keep turning just the same, we are only a little part of it.

I think we all get depressed because we hear and see so much in the media and there is nothing we can do to help or change things which makes us feel worse. Don’t engage for your own mental health! Just look out for your own little circle of friends and family, beyond that it is out our control.

rowyn Mon 28-Jul-25 14:12:22

That's sort of true, Oreo, but I fear that the advent of the internet will mean that people will gradually interact much less with each other, and this will have a really devastating impact on children in particular. They will learn word meanings, but will they experience emotion, politeness, obedience affection, courtesy, verbal communication, consequences of the way they behave.... etc etc etc Already we're having a spate of adolescents using knives, for example.
Sorry to be negative, but I really empathise with all the posts.

Lizzie44 Mon 28-Jul-25 14:13:20

We are bombarded by bad news every day, and several times a day if you choose to follow news programmes regularly. I am making an effort to cut down on news reports as I had become addicted to TV news. bulletins and the portentous music that heralds it. I am not a football fan but watching the Lionesses last night gave me a real lift.

That's lovely.
Just finding one thing per day to be grateful for, and shouting it from the rooftops, would undoubtedly people happier.

Nanna8 your GC would have a great time here in the UK and in Europe!
Stop being so negative towards us !

AuntieE Mon 28-Jul-25 14:56:57

I think we all feel much the same. But I also have a shrewd suspicion that some of the way we feel is not really only to do with the state of the world, but has quite a lot to do with our outlook now that we are all in the oldest age group.

The world was just as unfair when we were in our twenties or thirties in the 1970s - the Vietnam war had dragged on for an age, the Six Day war was just past, the Yom Kippur war was in sight, all those high-jackings of planes and killings of hostages, Ireland - need I go on?

The difference was that we were young, optimistic and certain we could change the world - we couldn't but we had a pretty good bash at doing so, didn't we?

My grand-parents were dead by 1970 - God rest them! Others of their generation, plus many of my parents' shook their heads and wondered aloud what the world was coming to, and expressed the same fears for our generation as we are expressing for our grandchildren's.

So, what can we do? We can . according to our personal preferences, denote to a charity we feel has a good chance of actually helping those in war-torn countries, or we can concentrate on making a difference in some way or other in our local society, where if we look, we are sadly bound to find people in need, or we can try to influence our politicians, or simply like Agatha Christie's Miss Marple read the morning paper before we say our prayers.

Fancythat Go out into nature! I see so much land being built on I feel there won't be any space for nature before long. Wild camping, litter left everywhere, fires started. Bikes of all kinds wearing out grassland in countryside and parks. Beaches show recent covering of litter. I despair at the mess humans make of their environment. That's what makes me irritable.

Stillness Mon 28-Jul-25 15:56:31

The less news I watch, it seems the more tv news programmes they put on! I’ve been known to have a panic attack watching it. I think theres so much wrong with the world and I don’t put that down to my perception just because I’m aging.

Etoile2701 Mon 28-Jul-25 15:56:57

Me too.

Mini2020 Mon 28-Jul-25 16:16:57

I feel exactly the same. My mood is low and everything seems to be sadness, I’m trying not to watch the news. Equally less social media.

lilypollen Mon 28-Jul-25 16:27:22

Mini2020, I was about to post pretty much the same thing. This topic has been very reassuring that my mood and disinterest in this hopeless world is not abnormal.

Best to use the quote facility then it becomes obvious 😀
