l will apologise in advance for my irritability, which is beginning to show, but I think that everything about the world is so utterly dreadful at the moment, that it is definitely beginning to affect my mood.

I must somehow get a grip but it is difficult.

I'm starting to feel irritable too, but am not going to apologise.

Let it go, let it go 🎶🎶

Surely not, Allira, that's unlike you!
Though I would like to see you really let rip!😂

I feel exactly the same. My mood is low and everything seems to be sadness, I’m trying not to watch the news. Equally less social media.

I have news on, background noise, I don't watch.

Best for my always happy self. No worry, there have always been conflicts that somehow end. Things turn round to the better.

Absolutely, Mt61. You can't beat classic movies for a cheer up. I love musicals - particularly dance, and currently when I feel down I replay on YouTube a wonderful duet danced by Bob Fosse and the great Tommy Rall (who's best remembered for dancing on a moving roller in 'Seven Brides for Seven Brothers' ). This duet is from the film 'My Sister Eileen'. (Choreography by Fosse of course), I defy you not to be smiling by the end of the clip. Here's the link to YouTube which looks a bit long, so I hope it works.

I and so many of my friends feel the same and can't make out why we do as we are supposed to have it all but it makes me wonder if the so called New World Order is doing it deliberate and they probably are. I expect it to get worse before it gets better but do not fear for the young, they are growing up with it and will embrace the changes like we did compared to our parents and GPs. We really did have it all and for that I am glad. A friend of mine although abrest of the world news just does what he wants, thinks as he wants and doesn't respond to the corruption going on, he said he can't change it, it has gone to far so just be happy for yourself and the rest will follow.
When my partner of 33 years died 2 x days after his funeral we went into lockdown since then I have had to scrimp and this is what gets me down not having any spare money to treat myself and family as I would like. I carboot and enjoy the banter and camaraderie but this is often like pulling teeth and its hard going. Inflation is cruifying some of us, we are supposed to be an acccountant, financial advisor, solicitor, its overwhelming, sometimes ignorance is bliss.

Spoke to my daughter today. She feels the same as me. As a history teacher she's aware of history repeating itself; she's also been politically active over the past few years but now feels helpless, too.

Think you were on a couple of pages back, Oreo.

That means nothing if a poster doesn’t show a quote.

Totally agree Whitewavemark2, trash on TV most of the time,
some awful people around. It was so much nicer when the World was slower.

We've been watching Human on BBC2.
Most interesting and thought-provoking.

I don't know if the world is any darker now than it was in the past.
Mass communication 24/7 via the internet or television is dominated by reports of wars, famine, crime, corruption and bad behaviour. This, on face value seems to outweigh the positive events, good people and the improved and worthwhile outcomes which exist in our world today.

Before TV and then the internet many people lived in a relative form of ignorant bliss simply because we were not exposed to as much information.

Its understandable that exposure to so much bad stuff makes us irritable, frustrated and negative.

Exactly this.
Better to stop all the constant news watching if life makes you miserable and irritated.
There’s a danger of taking it out on other people otherwise.

Sorry to hear you are having memory issues.

Exactly Dorrain

The world is no worse than it’s ever been - it’s just now we get so much information that people can talk about it all day long on social media ( if they choose to )

All the things that happened in the past up to today in the world were no better but now, if retired you have time to dwell on it all , plus rolling news and SM.
To help your own mental health only watch the news once a day and don’t get into it on SM.
If you’re able to, get out more and do things.

Hope that helps.

I look at my 18 year old grand daughter, A levels and school behind her, just flown in a plane for the first time and holidayed abroad without her parents Her whole hopeful adult life ahead of her, a rose bud just starting to bloom in the sun, and I want to cry.

I think most of us feel this way about our grandchildren and, in my case, a new great grandson. Helpless isn’t the word.
But life goes on in whatever way it wishes and there’s not much any of us can do about it.
I remember my late parents telling me of the worry, despair and helplessness people felt in WW11. As my dad used to say it’s all part of life’s rich pattern.

mumstheword86 Mon 28-Jul-25 23:14:51

True True the world a horrible place right now and we cant seem to beable to do anything those that can dont get togther and do anything that makes any difference I dispare what my four grandchildren are going to have to cope with !!!!!!!

It's the apparently eternal Cost-Of-Living crisis that gets me down. It's STILL with us and weak-and-feeble Starmer doesn't seem to give two hoots. But maybe if he and Reeves and Rayner weren't too busy climbing on and off planes to attend yet another international junket then they might - just - take time to get to grips with things at home.

What brings this on? Yesterday at the supermarket every item on the list had gone up again except one. Salt.

I give up.

Sooze58 Tue 29-Jul-25 07:53:21

I too am becoming grumpier. I can’t see a way out. I thought at 67 I’d be winding down and enjoying my retirement. Now I can’t see when I’ll be able to do that……..

Maremia Tue 29-Jul-25 10:15:35

One way to cope is by getting lost in a good book, and there is a GN thread devoted to good books. Take some time out, and treat yourself to a different reality, one that you have a bit of control over.

Jaxjacky Tue 29-Jul-25 10:34:11

I look at our granddaughter, nearly 18, full of hope, after some years of struggling with autism and epilepsy, with the perseverance of her Mum and medics she’s riding high.
I’m an optimist, anything else would drag me down.

eazybee Tue 29-Jul-25 10:38:50

I went to the local supermarket yesterday determined to spend one of my vouchers for £6 off if I spent £40. Despite some basics I needed such as eggs, flour and caster sugar being unavailable I managed to spend £53, and was surprised and delighted to discover that the voucher and club card savings amount to £12 therefore bill of £41! (and the only extravagance was a bag of crisps.)

When I am irritable it tells me more about myself than others.
I am difficult at the moment because
My DH is at home all the time now.
My little dog is deteriorating and may be put down on Thursday
Have corns on my feet which are now a bit painful.
So the wifi going down was very irritating...
