‘Preferred’ Presenters.

Sitting here eating my breakfast, listening to Classic FM as usual.

Aled Jones is hosting the Breakfast show, standing in for Dan Walker, obviously on holiday.

I much prefer Aled’s dulcet tones to Dan’s rather strident, excitable way of presenting, with his dog walkers comments and hearing about some listener’s experience with their own Fido.

Set me thinking how the evening BBC News has preferred presenters, (Clive Myrie, Reta Chakrabarty, Jane Hill) to some of the others, likewise with the weather presenters.

Still, wouldn’t do if we all thought alike, would it?

Cabbie21 Thu 14-Aug-25 07:29:37

Didn’t I hear that Dan Walker has a throat infection?
I preferred Tim Lihoreau. Love Aled.

Yes, I prefer Aled. I think he has a better knowledge of music too, through his childhood and beyond.

Some female tv presenters are too shrieky for me. I like Jasmine Harman, and Claudia W who is very witty.

Sophie Raworth is probably my preferred news presenter. Clive Myrie goes without saying.

I don't like the way presenters have become personalities. They should read the news neutrally, not interpret it with their voices (eg 'There were three times as many gizmos than grommets produced in the UK last year!!!'), and stop introducing one another as though they are more important than the news itself - Thanks, Bill, now it's over to Gladys, and Sarah will be back at ten. Goodnight from me, Doodledog and all at Gransnet until tomorrow'. Just Read The News.

I like Carol Kirkwood the weather presenter

A marmite one I know, but I like Amal Rajan’s presenting style. The ‘Today’ programme has become much less aggressive since he joined the team, but not less informative I think.

doodledog do you think the coziness is an attempt to counteract the unrelenting doom and gloom? In the same was as Radio 4 always signs off after midnight with a soothing goodnight and ‘Sailing By’.

I much prefer that Ooh Gary Davis is sitting in again for Vernon Kay radio 2 show this morning, love Jo Whiley on an evening also.

Grandmadinosaur Thu 14-Aug-25 10:45:51

I prefer Gary Davies to Vernon too. If only he was on permanently.

Boz Thu 14-Aug-25 10:46:38

I listen to Classicfm in my car but the minute I hear the patronising, quasi-dramatic tone of Alexander Armstrong, I switch off.
Ditto the Munchetty woman.

Mollygo Thu 14-Aug-25 10:47:59

Roger Johnson on NW news is my favourite. I’m always happy to know who is presenting what when they pass on to the next presenter.
That was how I found out that one was somebody I used to teach.

Crossstitchfan Thu 14-Aug-25 10:50:09

Come on Gary Davies fans. Make your voices heard by telling the powers that be that you prefer him.

I like Classic fm when I'm out in my car but I too can't stand Alexander Armstrong. He is so condescending

Casdon Thu 14-Aug-25 11:38:59

Another Gary Davies fan here, although I don’t dislike Vernon Kay either. I read that Gary is happy with his chief fill in role though, he doesn’t want a daily programme. He’s 67, so I suspect he’s happy to be able to work as much as he wants but still do his own thing.

My favourite TV news presenter will always be the lovely George Alagiah, so missed.

Susan56 Thu 14-Aug-25 11:41:14

Aled is definitely my favourite on Classic FM.Not keen on Dan and Alexander.
Have stopped listening to Radio 2 and Radio Wales but will give radio Wales another go when Branwen starts her new show in the autumn.

Oreo Thu 14-Aug-25 11:43:15

I like Aled Jones too😃 also Clive Myrie and Trevor Phillips.
I also like Eamonn Holmes laid back style.

Anniebach Thu 14-Aug-25 12:03:10

I still miss John Humphries , and yes George Alagiah so sad

Not Laura Keunssberg

Kate1949 Thu 14-Aug-25 12:43:16

Not everyone will know him, but I love our Midlands weather man Des Coleman with his sharp suits and his bouncing around like Tigger.

kittylester Thu 14-Aug-25 13:47:51

I am really enjoying Tina Daheley (sp?) sitting in first the awful Jeremy Vine.

We used to have Des Coleman, Kate. I loved him.

Kate1949 Thu 14-Aug-25 14:17:58

He's a breath of fresh air kitty.

Bixiboo Thu 14-Aug-25 14:35:30

On the odd occasion I watch BBC news I prefer Clive Myrie and Reeta Chakrabarty. My overall favourite presenter is Patrick Christys.

InnocentBystander Thu 14-Aug-25 14:52:54

Clive Myrie is a human sort of chap, but he has some rather odd inflections sometimes - less so than he once was though.
Justin Rowlatt is an instant OFF with his accusatory and excitable tone.
Charlotte Green who was a BBC presenter until a giggling fit over a stupidly useless recording had her card marked. Classic FM's gain. Her cheerful almost irreverent style is a joyful contrast to Kuenssberg or Chris Mason. To hear her corpsing www.youtube.com/watch?v=6X7FV_rGKig

Love Des..his infectious laugh and his style of presenting, improves my mood when he is bouncing around like Tigger!

No, I think it's more about celebrity culture grin

It's been going on for years, and the fact that we can name so many newsreaders says it all, really. They are different from 'presenters' I suppose - the breakfast ones don't just read the news but chat about various inanities too.

The intonation is what annoys me most though. It makes their opinions clear, and they shouldn't matter. It's one thing to smile when telling a story about a cute child or rescued cat, but they should be absolutely neutral when reading about politics or other 'hard' news.

Oh dear, sorry! I did say he was a marmite one.

I like Krishnan Guru Murphy too, and Vernon Kaye. Tony Blackburn’s banter with Dermott O’Leary is usually fun on a Saturday morning.

Paddy MacGuiness, Michael Ball and Elaine Page do not feature in the listening schedule here any more. Their chat feels forced to me.
