Good morning from another hot Suffolk. I’ve just been reading your posts and wanted to add my comments on the posts about VJ Day.
My uncle, dad’s younger brother fought in Burma and on his return became very involved in the Burma Star organisation for the whole of his life until he died in his early 90s.
They arranged a trip to Burma to visit the war graves and some of the places where they had fought. They could take a companion to accompany them as they were all in their 80’s . When I spoke to my uncle not long before he was due to go,he was very excited about the trip but when they all assembled at Heathrow, he couldn’t face the thought of returning tothe place and the traumatic times there which, like many others,he never discussed in the family.
I like to think that he got comfort and support from his friends in the organisation. DH and I visited 1 of the Commonwealth war cemeteries when we visited Myanmar just before the elections when Aung San Sun Kyi was elected to the role of State Counsellor. There were so many graves of young men in their late teens.
Robert Kenyon, Reform's candidate for Makerfield. Would you let him in your house?
