Good morning Mick and all GN's from a still ,dry, sunny but slightly cooler morning in North Yorkshire. I have had a rubbish night with very little sleep, so full of aches and pains and gritty eyes etc. I am also providing another murder mystery clues scene, as my flipping foot is bleeding again this morning. It is difficult when the cut is on the sole of your foot. I either try not to walk on that bit, resulting in painful legs, back awful and making it worse by not walking in a normal manner, or walk normally and open the cut again and leave a trail of bloodstains. also trying to wash it and keep it clean. Tried a plaster on yesterday, but it didnt work because of the constant movement and it was hard to put on as well . This morning it has taken me ages to even get up, struggling with everything. Still as they say round here "Take what you want - and pay for it!" That is what I am doing.
Yesterday got off quite early and had a reasonable drive up to Rosedale to the show. The weather was lovely, traffic not too bad and the moors had the heather turning purple and great views across. We were to the south of the big fire near Fylingdales, so didnt have a lot of smoke. They have had fire engines from all over trying to combat the fire for over 6 days. Because it is up on the moor and it is peat, they are able to put out the obvious fires but the peat is burning underground and you do not know where it will break out again. So it is a long time disaster, as birds and habitats are burnt and killed and the peat releases gases that it normally holds, and of course it will literally take probably a hundred years for that peat to refill that space. We already have no steam engines on the north york moors as the fire risk is so great and we are all doing our best to watch out for fires starting and making sure there is no glass or other things that can spark a fire. The trouble is of course that whilst the great majority of people out and about respect and follow the rules, there is always the selfish few who dont take care, leave litter and are stupid enough to take barbecues up on the moor or smoke. The morons who think it will be lovely to see the view from up on the moor, drive their car to the viewpoint and then proceed to smoke and throw cigarette buts out of the window and empty litter up there. Well we just must remain vigilant and I find my binoculars very useful to be able to look further afield for any signs of smoke or fire.
Anyway I got up to Rosedale to the show. Was able to park on the parking field in the disabled bays, but all the disabled ringside places had long gone. So that meant I sat and made myself a coffee whilst I collected my thoughts and worked out what I needed to take with me to the ringside. My chair is the most important as it is a foldup chair but with metal arms and legs. This does make it heavier to carry, but is my one way of being able to get up and down, as I can press on the arms and manoeuvre myself out of the chair. so with quite a bit of effort i managed to get myself complete with chair, bag, papers sarnies etc etc down to the ringside and settle there for the duration. They now use this bright orange netting stuff to surround the ringside, which is a bit of a pain for me, because when I am sitting I am not above the netting , so have to peer through it to watch the goings on. Anyway some marvellous classes of horses, from heavy horse to childs ponies , all sorts of classes, and much to enjoy.
I had of course my suncream and hat etc etc. Had made some coffee when I arrived in the carpark, and had of course brought my china mug down to the ringside. Kept looking across as the fresh coffee stall, in the hopes that the queue would get shorter at some point, as standing in a queue for a long time is very painful for me, but it never seemed to diminish. Was talking to a young woman with 2 children, one of whom , the little girl, was very excited by the horses and constantly asking her mum about things, which her mum didnt knew much about so of course I was providing answers for her.
One of the things children find quite amazing is when you tell them that the big shire type horses would have had the knights in armour on them and going into battle. As the armour was so heavy the dainty horses in the show classes would not have been able to carry them I get them to see how if the knight fell off he could not get back on, and we look round the fields to see where and how someone could get back up on a horse. It makes it more real to them , and you can talk on all the work polishing the armour and the saddles etc etc. Her mum seemed quite grateful to have a chance to set out their picnic with less interuptions and when I looked across at the coffee stall and saw it was just as bad, I had a bottle of water with me and reluctantly got that out. Her husband came across to ask what they wanted to drink and she asked if he could get me a drink, for which I was very grateful, and was very pleased to get a coffee at last. I think it amused them to see me of course, get out my china mug and transfer the coffee to that . (a hint of Hyacinth Bucket I think) So the day proceeded and we were very lucky that the weather stayed lovely and dry for everyone but a bit of a breeze and nowhere near as humid as the previous day.
Over the day I managed to go round all the tents and look at the tractors etc. These days of course huge great smart ones with cabs etc, but they had a variety of tractors on show and I recognised more the little old fergie that my great uncle and family had been happy to use, and it somehow had a bit of a character, but of course the new ones are so much safer. So I lingered on, rather putting off the inevitable effort of going back to the car. It was a slight hill to go back to the carpark and could only drag the chair with me and had to constantly stop to rest and ease my back. Was somewhat shattered when I finally made it back to the car, and was glad to take my time sorting things out, and then just sat in the car and listened to a little radio three concert, whilst lots of people set off. Then came back via Hutton le hole and Kirkbymoorside, and the traffic was really thinned out so an easy drive home. I had rather seized up by the time I got back and the plan to water the garden had to be abandoned and it was just a struggle to do anything. But worth it I thought, despite literally only getting a drink and something to eat, leaving the mess everywhere and then going to stretch out on the bed and so onto a horrible night. Never mind worth it all.
Today if I improve by this afternoon I have a garden to go and look at near Ripon, but that will depend on if I can manage to walk round today. So this morning I am just having to take it a bit at a time. Am going out to water my garden as soon as I have finished this before it gets hot, but cant do any weeding as I usually do as I go . Then I need to go through the stuff in the car, and make sure that my picnic box etc is all back in working order ready for mynext jaunt, . I shall of course have my lovely programmes to listen to on the radio whilst I creak about, so hope to improve a bit.
How I am missing my swimming. Still got to do without for 4 weeks I think it is. I had been wondering whether I could afford to have another swimming season ticket, with the cost of things going up everywhere, but this enforced lack of swimming, has shown me that it really is not a luxury in my case. It is the way I can have some exercise and when I am in this state helps me get some sleep too. so whatever else has to go the swimming pass is going to be top of the list once I can start again. So it will be a slow down day and some mundane doings.
Very glad to hear your are improving a bit Mike but do take it easy and see if for a little while some of your friends might be able to visit you for a change. Hope there is some good cycling for you to watch on the box today Pantglas glad you are having a good cruise and enjoying the trip.granMattie you had quite a day of it one way and another. Hope someone has come to help you but things back and that you can have a more restful day today.
Hope we can all have a peaceful and calm day today and a bit of a rest . I certainly think I need to have a quieter week next week. Enjoy your day, and may we have a good downpour in the night! (wishful thinking!)
